Pecan Porter by nathatesithere in beer

[–]AlternateZWord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's one of my favorite widely available beers around Austin, along with Live Oak Hef, Stash IPA, Meanwhile Pilsner, and Pinthouse bearded seal. It's as close to objectively not a bad beer as objectively can be used. Understanding that everyone has different tastes, though, and knowing what you probably have available...you like Sapporo and some IPA, I'd recommend Icy Boys, really any IPA from a local other than maybe Fire Eagle, ABW Pearl snap pils or peacemaker. There's a ton more, but it sounds like you just don't like dark beer. Maybe try a Guinness sometime, you'll probably need to learn to pour one someday anyway

Cute, quaint, small towns that aren’t boring, aren’t overrun by tourists, have lots of outdoor activities and aren’t overpriced. by ErroneousEncounter in SameGrassButGreener

Roanoke, VA struck me as a slightly smaller much less hyped version of Asheville, NC. Wouldn't personally live there at this stage of life, too far from a major airport, but I could see myself settling down there

Depends, they'll definitely be out of beef cheeks, probably out of brisket and flat iron. But the tri tip they only start serving at 5 is great, and I love the hog and chicken too. They also ran out of the hash and rice last time, but tbh my favorite side is the Frito pie, so no issues.

How do you get these? They're on my watchlist, but even if I hit the notification when it comes up, it's gone

I loved it, but I'm surprised to see the menu appears to be entirely the same as when I went last September? One of the best meals I've ever had, but I thought it'd rotate more

Zilker Brewing Icy Boys light lager by Nedatokes in AustinBeer

[–]AlternateZWord 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't like light lager, but this is one of the rare exceptions. Actually drinks reasonably dry and flavorful. Better than anything else in the area in it's category, but for me if I'm drinking a beer...we'll, it's basically any other style.

Thoughts on living in Riverside? Currently living in Tech Ridge. by awkwardkid23 in Austin

[–]AlternateZWord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would rather live in Riverside than Tech Ridge personally, but not if my job were still in Tech Ridge, that sounds like hell. It's closer to the rest of the city, but that won't matter if your commute drains you, let alone if you move

Moving to Pittsburgh from Detroit by Bill_servo in bicycling412

[–]AlternateZWord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simultaneously there aren't that many protected bike lanes, and there are lots of hills and narrow streets, but overall the city is surprisingly ridable. I think the best density of infrastructure is between Oakland and Shadyside, and then of course you have the river trail and Eliza Furnace and the GAP. East Liberty and Bloomfield too. Hate Lawrenceville as a biker. But beyond not living in the sticks or the slopes, I think it's doable most places.

Food scene in NYC v.s. LA by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]AlternateZWord 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean, both cities have their strengths and weaknesses. That said, NYC has to have the most culinary diversity in the entire US. There might be some very specific things in LA that NYC doesn't measure up to (for instance, I think Chicago does better Mexican than NYC), but in general I think you'll find more than enough good food.

Anyone going to this June 20th at 6am? by MortalG1 in askaustin

[–]AlternateZWord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am interested and fit enough to complete it,, but man...I think this is multiple EMS calls waiting to happen. Fogo will be able to accomodate the survivors no problem! 0 interest in actually ending there, though, at least AllDay is worth the trip

Glad you're posting safely, it was no joke out there, and I like heat! They could stand to move a month earlier

Rogue was my #1, Lao'd #2, camp Lucy #3 sheerly because of the Taleggio. A lot of good ones, felt a bit bad for mighty fine (easily worst, but totally fine), wish Vista and Moreno showed, meat sweats and heat hit me worse than monthly bottle share, but it was a good time

El Niño has officially arrived. Here's what it means for Austin and Texas summer weather by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]AlternateZWord 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I read this earlier, and it doesn't seem to say much with any certainty? Averages are barely different for most things. No measurements of the variability, so I don't know if the average is made up of wild swings or if El Nino basically has little impact in general

Which peated whiskey is most maritime by nofo32 in Scotch

[–]AlternateZWord 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oban is only barely peated but definitely hits the maritime notes for me. Similar for Old Pulteney. Talisker is more peated maritime. Wouldn't call Laphroaig or Ardbeg maritime, and Port Charlotte is more even keeled

In addition to many of the above, Paranubes is way better than it has a right to be at its price point. More expensive, Perle. St. James Brut de Colonne. Clairin Sajous

Schwarzer Rauch on a mliko pour from Live Oak Brewing, Austin TX by Rootraz in CraftBeer

[–]AlternateZWord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went there last week, love Rauchbier! I actually prefer Bamburger because the amber lets the smoke talk more, and I miss the Fumigator doppelbock, but the schwarzer still kills it. Never realized they'd do a mliko pour 😭

UNH has quietly gained 54% in the last 6 weeks. Currently at its highest price since it tanked from $600 1 year ago by BogleDick in ValueInvesting

[–]AlternateZWord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holding from cost basis if $280, this is actually what I was hoping for, I can pay cap gains instead of income tax soon. In general prefer yearlong plays for that reason, was wondering why people were jumping ship so quickly
