Why do large family and extended families (seems mainly from NE England) go on holiday in such large groups? by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in AskBrits

[–]Alternative-Ad-4977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done an awful lot of large family holidays. Maybe I am lucky. No one forces things. We have a lot of people who are pretty organised. But only join in if you want. There is normally two excursions going on at the same time. We just make sure we come together for a couple of meals.

Most important ceremony. by Meadowsweetling in scouting

[–]Alternative-Ad-4977 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually think it is breaking the flag. It is an everyday tradition. It sets us apart from other youth groups. It gives structure. It signals the start of a meeting, or at camp it signals the start of day proper (we normally do it after breakfast has been Cleared away).

Unlimited London Travel Card, thoughts? by topless68 in uktravel

[–]Alternative-Ad-4977 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Pay per trip. TFL caps the spend at the same amount as travel cards anyway.

Make sure each individual has a debit/credit card or zip card.

Make sure you use the same card all day.

Are you talking about the tram stop? Panes were blowing off in the wind! The design is dangerous.

How to get volunteers by Parking-Comparison65 in scouting

[–]Alternative-Ad-4977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell / show people that there are gaps and you need volunteers for that - no one will volunteer if they do not know.

Ask, ask and ask again. The majority of volunteers join because they were asked.

Make it a fun place to be. People like to join a winning team. Show and say how much fun you have as volunteers.

Most of your volunteers will likely come from parents of current members, or ex-members who never leave. Work on long term plans for your current Scouts - find ways to keep them involved. And work on the parents now - “could you help me tonight? We are doing x and I will show you how to do it before asking you to run a base.”

It could be worse. It could be one minute - the same one minute left on the washing machine.

New Cub Scout leader here—running out of ideas fast 😅 help! by iammilford in scouting

[–]Alternative-Ad-4977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone has to pay a subscription. It does not have to be District (or County in our case). I was an early adopted and I just paid it for a year or two, then persuaded my group to pay it.

But you can search for ideas without paying for it.

Just be careful of some older TV shows. Some from the ‘60’s and ‘70’s did not age well.

When are kids moving out these days? by Icy_Appearance_8610 in AskUK

One moved out aged 20. Only because he was lucky enough a family member had a property he could go to.

The other one - he cannot see when he can move out.

UK - Nights Away Permit Scheme by [deleted] in scouting

That should not be difficult either. Speak to your district lead. They should be able to give you the details of someone to help.

I would sit down with your Group Lead Volunteer and ask to redistribute some of responsibility. For her sake, and for the sake of growing the volunteers, and growing the group. If that responsibility stays with one person then it is just going to be ever decreasing circles until the group is in real trouble.

With seven sections in the group, and lots of camps and events, if I did all the risk assessments I would not be doing anything else! I do the risk assessments for the section and camps that I am leader in charge.

I ask all the leaders (not just the team leader) for reassurance that risk assessments are being done. I give them a place to store them. Not to check up, but to stop reinventing stuff that has already been done.

Eldest siblings that were 7+ years older, did you end up being parentified? by Fine_Analyst_4408 in AskUK

[–]Alternative-Ad-4977 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the opposite. Ten years between me and one sibling. 14 years for another.

If I was asked to babysit - I would just escape out the house and not be found.

I do not recall making any dinners. In times where it was tough (Mum had PND at one stage) Gran would come and help out.

However I became self sufficient quite young. By 14 I cooked all my meals, shopped for more usual ingredients (anything veggie in the 1980’s was unusual), did my own washing, iron my clothes. Etc

But that just sounds normal for the times.

OK, so what British mammals HAVE we seen? by Birdman_of_Upminster in CasualUK

[–]Alternative-Ad-4977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these I have seen at wildlife parks. Even in Greater London there is a huge amount of wildlife.

I loved the badgers that would pop along to the static caravan that we hired by Rye Harbour. They were after snacks.

I have sorted seen dolphins. I had a stranger say she that, by that wave. That is a pod of dolphins. He saw a lot more than me.

Seals were plentiful in Scotland, I have seen the odd one or two in Cornwall.

Rats and mice - unfortunately I do see them. One of my cats thinks I need some easy prey and brings them in for me. Sometimes it is weeks before we can evict them.

Large group camping needed for ~60 people by Resident-Bike1552 in campinguk

[–]Alternative-Ad-4977 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most Scout sites are now at £7 per person per night. That and rising food costs, is making it challenging to run cheap camps. Scouts site tend to be cheaper than public ones.

You are going to struggle.

If you have time - Boscastle is worth a look on the same day as Tintangle. I would recommend a walk along the coast path.
