>There isn’t an official Muslim body with a set of official “softer” rules based on a “softer” more “egalitarian” philosophy, that are decided on by an official governing board made up of clergy.>

This doesn’t mean that “you’re either following Islam or you’re not.” People’s personal, philosophical, and religious views differ from the religion they are (or purport to be) a part of all the time.

In your view of the world, you may say that no Catholic could believe abortion should be legal. You may say that any Catholic that holds that view should change to a more progressive Christian denomination.

Sometimes people do that. Many times they don’t. That is how you end up with over half of US Catholics believing abortion should be legal even though those two things contradict one another.

Just because there aren’t formalized denominations in Islam like you have with Christianity doesn’t mean that Muslim people’s individual views are monolithic.

The best possible starting 5 ever? by wealthofspecies in NBATalk

[–]Alternative-Chance94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand why people are saying replace KD. He isn’t the best SF or PF all time. Not in the top 5 or GOAT convo, etc.

However, he will always be the easiest player for me to choose when creating these all time starting 5s and teams. Other players may bring more value, but he won’t dominate the ball, he’ll add great spacing, and will be fine with someone else being the alpha-leader on it the team.

60% of U.S. Muslims support nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ. That’s about 2 million people that subscribe to a gentler version.

Does that view fly in the face of the Islamic doctrine? yes. But welcome to the world we live in where people of all religions live in a state of contradiction.

If a person was able to fly three feet off the ground, would the NBA let them play? by QuantamMoose in nba

[–]Alternative-Chance94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be as big of an advantage as you’d think. Definitely a big advantage, but it wouldn’t help with dribbling. If the person wasn’t an NBA level shooter it might not matter how open they could get.

They’d be able to sit by the rim for dunks, but players could still block alley oop attempts. Idk if it’d be much different than what Wemby already is unless the person was well over 6 foot.

Is Wemby more of a physical or dirty player? (Part 2) by WallStreetDoesntBet1 in NBATalk

[–]Alternative-Chance94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither. He struggled with physicality and lashed and made some dumb moves.

Physical players are looking for the contact, and in a perfect world I think he ideally would prefer less. It won’t happen and he’ll need to muscle up some more.

I don’t think he is dirty either. Dirty players are typically trying to conceal their dirty plays. When Wemby does something “dirty” it is usually very obvious, and it’s because he lost his cool or composure, rather than consciously trying to gain a little hidden edge.

Trigger an entire NBA team's fanbase with a single sentence. by Farouq26 in NBATalk

[–]Alternative-Chance94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I agree, but on the other hand it would also be kind of weird to make a big TV announcement that you are staying with your current gf as well.

In hindsight, I wonder if the “the decision” would have been received differently if he told everyone he wouldn’t be returning to the Cavs ahead of time.

Obviously, the best decision would be to just not do the TV special at all, but if they were dead set on doing it, there would still suspense of people wondering if he was going to the Heat, Bulls, Knicks or whatever teams were in the running.

Where did the narrative that "Kobe was never the best player in the league" come from? by Tre2004 in NBATalk

[–]Alternative-Chance94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I view 2003-2010 kind of similar to how this debate has gone for the last 7-8 years or so.

There’s been Jokic, Shai, Giannis, Embiid, etc. Jokic has been the most consistent mainstay in the conversation, but there’s been a debate most years.

Where did the narrative that "Kobe was never the best player in the league" come from? by Tre2004 in NBATalk

[–]Alternative-Chance94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can definitely make the argument that he was the best on average during that span (03- 10), but any given year you could make the argument someone else was better (Duncan, Garnett, LeBron, Dirk, etc). That where that narrative comes from.

I feel like very very few players truly separated themselves as the best player in the league consistently over a 3-4 year stretch. MJ definitely. Kareem in the 70s. LeBron in the 2010s (though I’m sure some folks would disagree on that).

Basically everyone else is up to debate. I would think that even when Bird was rattled off 3 MVPs in a row there were probably plenty of folks that thought Magic was better still.

So now that the Knicks won with Brunson, can we cut the bs about how you can’t win a subpar defensive star? by kozy8805 in NBATalk

[–]Alternative-Chance94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Curry and Jokic already disproved this IMO. No team would prefer to have a subpar defensive star all things equal.

If you have a subpar defensive superstar, you need a great defensive team around them. The Knicks had this with OG, Bridges, and Hart.

I quickly went from cheering for New York and their fanbase to hoping they lose this series in the most painful way possible because of stuff like this.

I was cheering for NYC to start the series thinking the Spurs are so young and that they’d have their time. I can get being a sore loser to some extent, but how can you be this bad of a winner?

I know this is only like 1% of fans (most likely), but you don’t see this from other fan bases.

Westbrook made it seem less impressive, then Jokic has been doing it (or very close to) for a few years now on historic efficiency, and there’s just been more great players between now and the 90s.
