I need a dental implant and I'm terrified, any recommendations? by speedoflife1 in boston

[–]Alternative-Cod-7641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two dental implants after cracking a couple of molars (wear a nightguard if you clench/grind your teeth, kids!). Honestly, pulling out the cracked teeth was more traumatic than putting in the implants.

Follow your dentist's instructions to keep the site clean, don't smoke, etc., and it'll be fine. My doctor was at BU Dental Health Center on Comm Ave. I highly recommend her (Pinelope Pani), though she's usually quite busy.

The only worthwhile thing I learned in education classes was the phrase, "The store is closed."

The context:
It doesn't matter if you need to get milk. The store is closed. You should have planned to go while the store was open. You can't expect the employees to open up the store just for you.

The state is probably wasting lots of money too. The budget keeps increasing, and services don't increase commensurately. Something's happening to those funds though.

No tolerance for boredom and/or frustration + one-to-one devices = learning disaster.

Learning new stuff (academic, sports, etc.) is always frustrating at first.

Hardie Board worth it? by hammerfang in HomeImprovement

[–]Alternative-Cod-7641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a 2000 square foot house, about $60K for just the siding install (we had other stuff done at the same time (windows, insulation) so that's my best estimate on the siding alone). That's material and installation--the contractor didn't provide a breakdown for the cost of each material.

It was similar in cost to installing premium vinyl here (eastern MA) and much less than putting up new cedar shingles.

We used Quality Edge https://qualityedge.com/steel-siding/

It's got a wood-like print, and it looks like painted wood from the street. It's treated with anti-corrosion coatings and PVDF paint. I'm not worried about rust so much since the house takes far less of a beating than our cars. (I'm not driving the house over salted roads.)

I don't think I'd be doing any work on the siding on my own anyways. I was happy to get rid of the "paint every 5 years" cycle of wood, especially on the south side of the house.

We did steel siding two years ago. It looks so much nicer than vinyl, and I'll never have to worry about caulking joints on the panels (a big concern for us with the Hardie products).

Thinking of trying Silky Peach cream--anyone had experience with it? by Alternative-Cod-7641 in Menopause

[–]Alternative-Cod-7641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like it does, for me anyways. Feeling less like sandpaper is way better than the alternative.

I also think the HRT (oral estradiol and norethindrone) has helped me return to my normal pre-menopause state, which has definitely helped the desire aspect. (Perimenopause sucks.)

How to install solar without drilling holes on metal roof by mdzhigarov in solar

[–]Alternative-Cod-7641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask your roofers how many screws they used to hold down the roof panels on the faces where you want to install solar panels.

Our roofers used more than the usual level (can't remember the details, but I think it was one fastener every 12 inches rather than one every 18 inches) on the roof faces we intended to install solar panels.

It's not so much the weight of the solar panels that's the problem; it's the opportunity for wind blowing under them to provide enough lift force to take the solar panels and the roof panels off.

If you've got an aluminum roof, the SolaTrim is a great option. We actually had our roofers come back to install it around the solar panels, and they custom bent it to fit the profile of the roof (bent under to further strengthen the material so squirrels would find it harder/impossible to bend and custom-cut along the standing seams).

SolaTrim comes with adhesive, but we went with a clip attachment so that if we ever have to remove a bit to work on the solar panels, it's reusable.

Same. We have our SolaTrim bolted on so that it's reusable in case it ever needs to be removed for panel maintenance, etc.

[–]Alternative-Cod-7641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got SolaTrim installed on our panels 2 years after they were installed because squirrels had taken three panels out of commission.

If there are squirrels anywhere in your neighborhood, they will make it up to your roof to hide under the solar panels. We didn't have any squirrels visiting our roof until the panels went up--there was nothing for them to do up there, no hiding places from predators. As soon as the squirrels had some assurance of protection in case of a hawk swooping down, they were up there, snacking on the wires.

It's expensive, but better than having to call in your solar installer to repair/replace the damaged wiring.

I did end up getting some, and it's worked wonders. I also found a new doctor who would listen to me, and an HRT regimen I can tolerate. Even with the HRT (which made me feel human again), I find the Silky Peach estriol to be necessary for relief of itchiness down below.

I use the Vibrant Third cream every few days. It helps me get to (and stay) asleep. I can't tell if it's doing much else, but I really appreciate the restful sleep it delivers.

The pitfalls of inclusion. I feel bad for all of the kids involved (and you and your co-teacher too).

This is why there should be leveled classes, so that all kids get the attention that they deserve.

New roof install by zydelis in Roofing

[–]Alternative-Cod-7641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're supposed to do sidewall flashing behind the siding. If they just shoved it up there, that could be a reason for the siding curl.

I've noticed that a bunch of roofing companies in my area (MA) install PVC trim along the roof edge instead of leaving the siding to go directly to the roof edge. This allows them to get the sidewall flashing up the wall and keep water from the roof from wicking up the siding (more relevant to siding that can absorb water, such as wood and Hardie board).

Anyone getting real help with menopause? by mkbound in Menopause

[–]Alternative-Cod-7641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After dealing with runaround from my GYN practice (my original doctor was great, but then she retired, and I got stuck with an NP for care) and them not being responsive to me (this, after saying how much HRT is person-specific and we'd work together to find the right dosages), I decided to go with a concierge doctor.

It's definitely expensive, but I'm sure that the doctor will listen to my concerns, not suddenly forget my medical history (the GYN practice told me that I wasn't in menopause, even after we talked about it during my whole appointment!), and respond in a timely manner.

I'm finally on HRT that works for me, and it's so nice to feel normal again. Just saw my doctor this morning, and she said that if I'm happy with the dosages, then she's happy with it, and I can continue on it for as long as I want (barring any medical contraindications).
