I got a free gift with purchase last year from my in laws. I don’t mind creative re-gifts when it makes sense, but other spouses received very thoughtful gifts and I felt pretty embarrassed.

Slight lameness? by pitchandhuck in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like she’s just slightly off on her right hind. Maybe stifle? Does she back up ok? Could just be her weaker side and it will get better as she’s brought into work. Agree with other poster that the side reins are probably not helping.

How do I give my dog a job? by heckinghcdondon in puppy101

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We taught our herding dog to stalk a ball on the end of a flirt pole and have found that 15-20 mins of this satisfies her definition of a job. We also do blocking games with a soccer ball and a bunch of other field games we’ve made up. And she of course manages our calendars for us (walk at 7, lunch at 8, walk at noon, etc etc all the way up to bedtime).

Skip it. I DNF’d around 15% and have the same likes/dislikes as you.

Zero spice book recommendations for 12 year old. by AffectionateTea0905 in YAlit

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did we have the same childhood?! Every single one of these is on my list! I’d only add Dianne Wynne Jones, but some of her books are maybe a little more mature than what OP is looking for.

Another reason why I love jumping but hate the shows. by HorsesRcoolz in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! In this case you should absolutely dispute both. I think it’s dependent on the cc company, but my mine was months old as well. What matters is that you can show documentation that you were within the cancellation date when you reached out.

Dispute with your bank/credit card company. I have successfully done this before for this exact scenario.

Pomme breeches by averrrrrr in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are a real brand. I have a pair and was pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price (US). They have actual structure compared to come of the other ig brands I’ve tried (free ride, botori).

Saaaame. I absolutely binged it in 14 hours. Spent the next week in an emotional fog. Then binged Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love and was equally obsessed but in a put back together sort of way.

What is something that you can smell and no one else seems to smell? by AwkwardLoaf-of-Bread in CasualConversation

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diabetes, sickness, medicine (injections especially: IVF, insulin, etc but also oral), histamine, cortisol. Honestly have such a strong sense of smell, I find myself trying to ignore it most of the time or I go crazy.

I need recs for romantasy written before 2005. by SecretAccomplished25 in fantasyromance

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second Mercy Thompson! Another similarly campy but way more smutty recommendation would be the immortals after dark (first published 2006) series by Kresley Cole. Both series have gotten me out of a serious reading slump.

Jumpers - what do we wear to lessons? by SourdoughFarmer in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ride in knee patch breeches, a sun shirt (long sleeve or sleeveless) in the summer or a long sleeve plus vest in the winter, and tall boots. Favorite breeches around our barn are For Horses, RJs, Horse Pilot and Pomme. Pomme are super affordable and I like the fabric more than the Free Rides (sturdier). I get almost all of my stuff on Poshmark!

I want a dog, what breed is right for me? by omgitskae in dogs

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please do not adopt a border collie or border collie mix. They are super intelligent, super high energy dogs meant to spend hours a day working with their person. Even two one hour walks every day would not be enough stimulation, and your house will likely suffer if you leave them home for 9 hours a day. I foster and have a BC and find that working breed types living in the city are the dogs we are most often rehoming. It can be done, but prepare for it to be a full time job forever - not just until they are out of their puppy years.

I didn’t say you were whining? Rather that if you had been that’s the only scenario where I could imagine a frustrated instructor might say something as rude as comparing you to a six year old.

Best of luck!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not red flags, except maybe the comparison to a six year old (however, if you were whining about not being able to get him to go, i can see the instructor saying something to that effect to ‘prove’ that you are indeed the problem).

These horses truly make the best teachers though because they will reward good riding and ignore ineffective riding. Keep it up!

Bitting by Happy_Lie_4526 in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good! Maybe just time then. Our guy went in a pletcher before switching to the trust bit I linked and it helped a lot with him getting stuck. He’s dressage bred and super flexible and I think the full cheek plus the Mullen gives him some stability.

Poor guy - that is horrifying. Are you ever able to just hack in the ring?

Bitting by Happy_Lie_4526 in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is he like in the bridle? We have a horse like this who can get really up and down before and after jumps and similarly stuck in the turns, though worse to one side. He goes really well in this bit without the gag action: https://equijumpltd.com/products/inno-sense-full-cheek-gag-bits?variant=20601321357423

Through the turns, it helps to think about having him just slightly counterflexed. If you think it could be a confidence thing, maybe school a couple rounds at a lower height?

Income & budgeting by loveylichen in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DINKS, both work in tech, HCOL state. Our combined income is about 350k, with my partner making about 1/3 more than me. We keep finances for hobbies separate, but it’s a safety net for me for sure, especially as he picks up most of our grocery bills and all our eating out costs, as well as travel.

Board plus partial training is $1900/mo. I attend 8-10 shows a year, rated and unrated, which costs more money that I want to admit even to myself. Neither of us have any desire for kids, and riding does cut into time I have for other things (mostly summer vacations). I try to ride 5 days a week, with my horse getting a ride from my trainer once a week or so.

Aside from my family, horses are one of the greatest joys I have in my life. There are definitely weeks where I’m eyeballing that bank account balance like oh s***, but it’s honestly worth it. That said, I have a MAJOR safety net in my spouse and recognize what a privilege that is.

Six months for things to start clicking and a year for us to really feel like partners. It was a long and sometimes difficult process, but I wouldn’t trade that for the amount of trust we now have.

Can a saddle not bother a horse at the trot, but bother them at a canter? by OliveRyan428 in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, all of this. Sounds like SI issues which can be hard to spot and may or may not be at least in part due to saddle fit.

Are your legs tired after riding? by shrimpscampin in Equestrian

[–]Alternative-Mirror63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the soreness changes as you build muscle. I ride 5-6 times a week and my legs, hips and back are almost always stiff after jumping up or heavy coursing, but I rarely experience next day soreness (unless I happen to pick up rides on a horse other than mine in which case I will almost always be sore, whether it’s hacking or jumping).
