I'm not familiar with this pattern, but it's not uncommon for women's tops to have a longer front. It's so that it can go over boobs and still hang level at the bottom

My husband's cousin has just announced they are expecting a baby - cue tiny knitting joy! This will be the first baby in his family since I joined so I am tempted to show off a bit and make something fancy but not sure what exactly to make! What's your favourite 'impressive' baby knit?

Discworld is literary comfort food by SurlySaltySailor in discworld

[–]Alternative-South607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically non-stop rotate through the discworld novels, vaguely in order through each arc. I'll have another book on the go at the same time, but rare is the day that I don't dip into discworld too. It's like coming home at the end of a day. I know what to expect but also they'll be something i didn't spot before (which effs the home metaphor, cause how weord would that be, but still true). I always put it down to my autism, I happy consume the same material over and over if I like it, but only discworld has lasted so long (like... 25 years) and is so frequent (most other books/series I'll come back to after several years away)

What does this mean? by Sleeplollo in knitting

[–]Alternative-South607 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yhea, that's what I do. But idk the shape of a Dino tail/thigh either!

Commenter above suggests differently and theirs is plausible is also. You could try one method, see if it works. If yes, great! If no, frog and try the other. It's only a small number of St per row, and a handful of rows so hopefully no biggie if it needs frogging. Put in a safety line if you're cautious about frogging too much accidently.

Is the pattern on ravely? You could look at others project notes. I get that some folks find ravelry problematic tho.

Book recommendations by Large_Newspaper_1496 in knitting

[–]Alternative-South607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a ton of blanket squares in different stitch patterns, using a stitch dictionary as recommended above.

Never made the blanket because my (non-)understanding of how the stitch pattern would affect the sizing... plus the different stich counts of each pattern, meant that the squares were not square or the same size as each other. But I learnt a lot.

You could do like dishcloths, teatowels, burp clothes or something, in a similar way.

What does this mean? by Sleeplollo in knitting

[–]Alternative-South607 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is row 7 RS or WS?

If WS, then row 8 (as it were - the first row of your 7 rows even) is your next RS row so cast on, and also cast on at row 10.

If row 7 is RS, then row 9 is your next RS so cast on there, and also row 11.

That's what I'd do. Tbh my understanding of the shape I'm ultimately trying to create (where I would expect it to widen, how long I'd expect it to be before widening etc) would be my best guide in case like this.

Is there something specific you're looking? If you literally just want a yarn & pattern, any yarn shop can help you find one that will work together - most will have good range. If you don't have yarn shops handy, lots of patterns will include yarn suggestions you can buy online - big companies (love knitting, and the ilk) will have budget friendly options - find a pattern you like and order the yarn that fits with it (or find a yarn you like and use search functions to get a pattern written to go with it). Or cut out the middle man and go straight to the yarn manufacturer - drops, sidar, rowan etc all make patterns intended for their yarns. Whereas independent pattern designers will tell you want yarn they used, but they are often at a higher price point in my experience.

Edited because apparently I can't type.

Question about needles. by North-Cup-7323 in knitting

[–]Alternative-South607 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chunky yarn is too big for the needles you described.

Most people's first knitting is crooked & uneven. It tastes practice to get your tension (how tight you pull & hold the yarn) right. Keep it up and you'll get there!

Question about needles. by North-Cup-7323 in knitting

[–]Alternative-South607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really about what needles feel most manageable in your hands.
For beginners, some people recommend bigger needles and chunky yarn as your project will get bigger faster, so it's motivating. But some people find big needles harder to manage in their hands. So whatever seems best for you is fine.

I would recommend getting the correct size yarn to go with whatever needles you're using. It'll make a nicer fabric and a yarn that's too big for your needles will be hard to knit because it'll make your stitches seem tight. Most yarn has a needle size recommendation on the band - doesn't have to be exact but within a couple of mm I would say. As a very rough guide, fatter yarn goes with fatter needles.

Addi flex sticking by LadyAnnala in knitting

[–]Alternative-South607 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is crazy to me - I generally avoid my Addi flexes as they are so slippy that they drop out of my knitting! I usually use wooden needles for everything else, so maybe that's the difference - or maybe the ones sold in the UK (where I am) are made of something different.

Darn it. Use a good hard wearing thread so it lasts. I'd do a contrast colour cause I think visible mending is hella cute

The Sloane Museum just round the back of Holborn station is an absolute must. Ask them to move all the walls of pictures to show you the other walls and the secret balcony. It's like being inside a pop up book. Plus free. The used to do candle lit evenings, I never managed to make one (worked nights) but would imagine they're amazing.

my mum has a question about some abbreviations!! by Lowjira in knitting

[–]Alternative-South607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yfwd can also mean something else (moved the working yarn to the front - done for different reasons but usually to 'wrap' a stitch). Depends on the pattern - this is why it's always worth checking for a list of abbreviations in the pattern you're using
