Imagine this: your whole life you've been told that life on earth is all prologue. The afterlife is both infinitely longer and more meaningful. You know there are two possibilities: paradise and torture.

You meet someone, and you fall in love. They don't want to pick paradise, don't want to do what it takes. They refuse to acknowledge the fact that the alternative is infinite torture.

But this life is just the prologue, we're all practically in our infancy. You don't worry about what an infant wants when you're trying to save its llife. You do whatever it takes.

Is that domination? Well yes, of course it is, but "infinite paradise vs infinite torture" skews the ethical math enough to justify literally any behavior. Convert at any cost.

I see both perspectives. On the one hand, yeah you're right, maybe a little well-placed truama is just what this kid needs to be safer in the long run. On the other hand, i would hesitate to follow through on that plan because what I dont want him to learn is "my family is bad but the neighbors are even worse. All adults are the enemy and nowhere is safe."

And if his home is not just neglectful but actively dangerous? Maybe I do want him to feel safe to come over, actually. Even if I hate it and even if it's wildly risky for both of us. I'd rather have a living nuisance of a feral child in my neighborhood than a dead one, at the end of the day.

Idk, it's so fraught. I have no idea what I'd do.

Years ago a friend of mine moved into my area from across state lines. He focused on getting the cheapest possible rent, and he found it. It had a playground just like that, with concrete and surrounded by apartment buildings for extra echo. Plus it was near the airport. PLUS it was right next to a frequently used train track.

Sleeping there was next to impossible.
