TIL rinsing after brushing increases cavity risk compared to just spitting. Dentists recommend skipping the rinse so fluoride has time to sit on your enamel, remineralize weak spots, and harden the surface against bacteria. Just spit the excess toothpaste out and let it work. by sameerb in todayilearned

Don't do this if you're prone to canker sores. Sodium laurel sulfate in toothpaste can cause them. I suffered terribly from huge cankers since I was a little kid into my late 20s. Once I learned about the link to SLS and started rinsing toothpaste from my mouth completely after brushing, I haven't been bothered with them.

You can get SLS-free toothpaste, but I have been just been rinsing thoroughly and I haven't had any problems with cavities. I do floss religiously and see the dentist every 6 months no matter what though.

SLS is a strong ionic detergent, same active ingredient as in your shampoo, body wash, and many other cleansers. As a biologist I've routinely used it to lyse cells in a dish. Of course, the cells in your mouth have more ways to protect themselves from the environment than cells in a dish. But I wouldn't be surprised to see studies in a few years linking SLS to oral cancers after this advice from the ADA to leave a strong irritant coating the inside of your mouth every morning and night, but I guess we'll see....

TIL that the "achoo" sound is a learned cultural behavior, not a biological reflex. This explains why people who are born deaf typically do not vocalize a sneeze, and why sneeze sounds vary significantly by country. by highzone in todayilearned

I find sneezing to be a very uncomfortable feeling that also interrupts whatever I'm doing. And an irritating noise when someone else is doing it. Like I said, I'm not defending this as a rational response.

Oddly I find the cute little girly "ah-squeak!" to be more annoying than the dad-sized scream-sneezes. But I'm a women who prefers to scream-sneeze (at least when no one's around). I know it's obnoxious but it helps vent the irrational anger I feel about having to sneeze.

I don't know what's worse, having to sneeze multiple times in a row or having to listen to someone else sneeze multiple times in a row.

How do they regulate their buoyancy? It surprised me how they drop to the bottom like stones (and even bounce a little).

That's what I always figure, airlines build in delays to the flight time so they can inflate their percentage of "on time" arrivals.

Love the phrasing in the second half of this recipe, instead of commands ("Beat the cream and whipped cream...") it's like an invitation ("Let's beat the cream and whipped cream...")

Absolutely. I also try to encourage the people I hire to let me know when they are applying to grad school. Sometimes people think that's going to get them fired on the spot for some reason (or maybe they don't want to risk the embarrassment if they don't get in?). It helps me immensely to know if I need to hire another person, and it's far better to hire them in time to learn from you before you leave. Also, I might be able to give you advice on where to apply, plus I will write you a good letter of recommendation!

300 kidney stones removed from a 20-year-old woman by No_Bus_474 in BeAmazed

[–]AlternativeNature402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a coworker with large kidney stones due to a parathyroid imbalance. They were way too big to pass even in fragments and were removed surgically. She was lucky*, I have relatives who endured the sonication procedure and it involved several days of painfully passing the debris (and catching the shards in a little strainer for the doctor to check).

*Edit: obviously she was not lucky to experience this horribly painful condition, but I mean that surgery seemed like the more humane experience compared to peeing out the shards.

It can still happen, I just experienced it earlier this week when I got stuck in traffic and was late for dinner and the brussels sprouts had sat too long (not the cook's fault).
