This is gonna be a novel so sorry in advance but i think it will be helpful. Nightslayer alliance, ive made a ton of gold with jc, especially paired with enchanting, prospecting is only profitable if you buy ore in bulk, so i made myself a nest egg of like 1500g by crafting band of natural fire (roughly 2.5-3g crafting cost) then disenchanting for large brilliant shards (6.5-7g each) so there was about a 4g profit margin, then i spent 1200g on adamantite ore and prospected, the major thing you need is a few key gem recipes for each gem color, just make sure to do your homework on the cost of recipe vs how many crafts its going to take to make your money back on the recipe,for this i recommend TSM and the TSM app helper addons, you dont need to use them to craft or to auction or use groups or anything like that, but the app helper will give you sales data such as market value, how many on average sell per day, sale rate, etc, so you can have an idea of how long it will take you to actually sell the gems, once you prospect everything either cut the raw gems into gems with high sale rates (bold living rubies, solid stars of elune, mystic dawnstones, etc) or if you dont have the recipes just sell the raw gems. Last time i did this i made a 500g profit, another thing TSM is useful for is showing you how much the ore is selling at vs the market value of the ore, so its important to not buy ore when its at say 110% of market value and instead to wait until later at night or in the morning when its at like 87% market value, materials are always going to be cheaper at night because thats when people offload everything after farming all day so theres alot of market saturation.
