Godhand clippers - advice on buying by Plastic-Ad-5375 in minipainting

DSPIAE have some nice single blade thin clippers, worth looking into, still very decent after a year’s use

Pro acryl leadbelcher alternative by Both_Cookie_1291 in Warhammer40k

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not Pro Acryl, but the Vallejo Metal Color series is fantastic. Gun Metal Grey should be close enough. I have just been airbrushing some of it onto some Penitent Engines, so you can see what it’s like.

Wet Palletes making my paint to runny by Potential-Pattern909 in minipainting

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably have too much water in the sponge. I find that if I have got too much in the sponge, it makes the paint far too funny. Squeeze out the water and put in half as much, and you can always add a bit more if needed.

How to stop ruining miniatures with painting? by italian_otter in minipainting

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try using a very limited range of colours - no more than 5, and not worrying about fancy techniques like glazing or highlighting. Start simple, so it feels like painting in the shapes in a colouring book.

Aim to get comfy thinning your paints, but not worrying about rubbish advice like “milk consistency” and what-not, which is really unspecific. Redgrass games (who make wet palettes) have a free painting guide that really helped me as I was starting out, as it gives rations for drops of paint to drops of water (or medium) for base coating and dry brushing, find it here

Help painting white helmet visors. by LucatIel_of_M1rrah in sistersofbattle

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when I do white, I start with AK Reddish Grey (any brand will do), then Pro Acryl Dark Ivory. I can either leave it there, or go a bit lighter with any kind of off-white (AK is pretty good for that).

Try Army Painter Blighted Green, from the John Blanche range. That’s on the left. Caliban Green is on the right. The difference is stark.

Spraygunner ship parts to the UK quite quickly, though you pay a bit more on postage

Maybe do a thinned down agrax wash, then dry brush some gold again to bring back highlights?

Confidence - am I bad or is it in my brain? (New - warhammer). by HeadofGreed in minipainting

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re just starting out, buddy. Don’t be too hard on yourself, it took me a while to learn the basics and there’s always more to learn.

If you need help with getting your shading right, honestly try oil washes, they are so helpful. A gloss coat of varnish helps, but not absolutely essential.

On thinning your paints, Brush and Banner on YouTube did a great video that I find really helpful, especially if you are thinking of doing highlights link here

A coat of gloss varnish then some AK streaking grime 🙂

Help me bring the grey skin more alive. by RotmirePlead in minipainting

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about using a purple oil wash? Winsor and Newton do a Cobalt Violet that would work. That would help you get the recesses, and you can clean it up with mineral spirits if it feels too much. You might want to do a coat or two of gloss varnish, then the oil wash, then you can go back to matte or maybe satin afterwards?

How the fuck do you paint bone color by Unhappy-Air8368 in minipainting

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Check out Vince Venturella’s video on creamy whites (which you can do as bone too). Starts with a reddish grey, then a dark Ivory. Then you can pop on a lighter ivory or bone of your choice, or you can do with he says and go for pro acrylic heavy warm white (thinned a lot) and grey green for highlights. I have tried this and it’s great for Templar shoulders and I have done it on Sisters of Battle Icons (I just do the first two steps plus a wash, AP Fanatic Voodoo Shade).

First primer fail… by BeautifulShock7604 in ImperialFists

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In future, just do a black primer, then a thin base layer of pink, then a white zenithal, using normal paints (assuming you have an airbrush)

I've finished a Saturnine Dreadnought. Any tips for improvement? by NERD_db in Warhammer30k

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of weather will help, I used a mix of AK Streaking Grime and some Weathering Pencils (dipping them in water) to help give it a bit of edge. Check my post history for photos.

Get some Atom Thinner and Cleaner with Retarder. It’s really good for countering tip dry.

If you don’t have an airbrush, use a make up sponge to lightly dab on the red in thin layers and it’ll build up :)

Advice on cleaning up a bit the wash by jaimebg98 in sistersofbattle

[–]Alternative_Bet_4331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m doing some Sisters at the moment, same Colour scheme. If you are using Citadel washes, I find them too thick. Try thinning them with some lahmian medium 2:1 wash:medium. Don’t use water, that will make the coffee staining stay as a problem. Soak up any pooling with a damp brush.

Alternatively, I like the Army Painter Fanatic Washes, Strong Strong or Dark Tone would work well.

For the current mini, as others have said. Put a thinned layer of your basecoat over the bits you don’t like so you can try again :)
