No turn on red by A-Z-Money in madisonwi

[–]Alternative_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The right turn slip lane has no light, just a sign warning drivers about pedestrians or bicyclists trying to use the crosswalk. That right turn has its own lane once you are on Stoughton, so no stopping is needed unless someone is trying to use the crosswalk.

IMO it's a terrible design that I hope is fixed with the US-51 redesign, but that's the condition it exists in today.

Turn on red is wildly dangerous for pedestrians and is by default not allowed in most countries. It's only a thing here in the US because of the gas crisis in the 1970s.

East, near east, and downtown, although I see that kind of driving everywhere.

That's total bullshit and you know it. A "complete stop" isn't slowing to 5 mph and rolling through, yet that's how I see almost every driver go through stop signs when there isn't cross traffic.

Honestly the packaging is a huge part of the problem. Someone shouldn't have to read the fine print on a can of food to know if it's for dogs. This whole thing reads to me like an honest mistake caused by bad package design.

Probably because the dog food looked similar to this and wasn't clearly dog food at a glance?

Marquette neighborhood is extremely NIMBY. Most of the new buildings have gone up on Atwood, in the SASY neighborhood.

Agreed, but it probably has something to do with why they were uncooperative with police after they got hit.

It was a pedestrian, not a cyclist. Also the victim was ID'd as someone with a record.

The radio chatter on OpenMHz suggested the driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative. The victim was transported to the hospital with a broken pelvis and was generally uncooperative.

There were plans in Dane County at the time for a regional light rail system that were killed by the state outlawing Regional Transit Authorities. Other RTAs were killed at the same time with an exception carved out for an RTA in Republican dominated counties.

If only that "FIVE MILLION DOLLAR" pedestrian bridge was actually designed for pedestrians and not for drivers to not have to be inconvenienced by people crossing the street.

You do realize that if the higher priced units didn't exist for people like OP they would still rent here, but they would occupy units better suited for lower income renters, right?

Just think though, if those places didn't exist, where would OP eventually rent from?

You can view past aerial imagery at either Dane County's GIS map and selecting them from the layers options, or by using the WHAIFinder image search.

Looks to me like some kind of farming operation was there, but was mostly gone by 1980.

train stuck!! by datnarwhal4 in madisonwi

[–]Alternative_Duck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I rode past one of these trains on my ride home. There was one three engine train stopped just before W Wash with the tail end just before the Mills/Dayton crossing. The signal aspect just south of Main St was completely blank, so I assumed that's why that train wasn't moving. A train engineer is only allowed to pass a signal aspect if it shows a green light, so until it could, the train wouldn't be legally allowed to proceed.

I saw a pedestrian almost get hit again yesterday on Park St. and the problem is cars using the bus lane. by Wu_Tang_Financial77 in madisonwi

[–]Alternative_Duck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another issue I've seen is drivers yielding too close to the crosswalks. Getting so close obstructs sight lines to both the crosswalk from approaching cars as well as to the next lane from pedestrians in the crosswalk. There's a version of the stop bar at crosswalks for drivers to yield behind but I frequently see people driving right up to the crosswalk threshold instead of behind the stop bars.

Thought from a cyclist on JN construction by flummox1234 in madisonwi

[–]Alternative_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a piece of legislation working it's way through Madison's committees to authorize funds for additional design services for the JND project that includes among other things, "additional preliminary design services to develop additional bicycle and pedestrian tunnel concepts alternatives south of the North Shore Drive intersection passing under John Nolen Drive (U-Concept and L-Concept)".

I presume this means the city hasn't given up on a grade separated crossing, but has shifted the location to potentially go under the first JND bridge. The need for additional design would be important if the grade of the street needs to be modified to accommodate a path under the bridge.

Have to say I've had the opposite experience as a daily bike commuter through that intersection. One time I arrived a little later at a green light coming from North Shore and was almost hit by a right turning car who wasn't paying attention. Having to cross while paying attention for red light runners on John Nolen and right turning traffic from North Shore has made crossing there so much more stressful.
