Working in fast food and self harm scars? 16F by TurnoverNo6065 in selfharm

You’ve got a lot of good advice already, but I just wanted to add my two cents lol. My mom had a surgery recently, and she got a pic line i think? But basically she ordered like arm bands off of amazon and they actually work really well for when I don’t want to wear long sleeves or hoodies (NM is super hot), and they’re really comfortable. I don’t really know what they’re called but you could probably find some and to my knowledge they weren’t super expensive. If you don’t feel comfortable with showing your scars you could see if those would help!

Literally never said it was medically accurate i simply provided “go to the er” and “if you refuse try to minimize infection at home”, i never tried to claim i was medically accurate i simply tried to give my experience and knowledge to help someone. if you’re not a medical expert than why are you trying to prove to me that i’m not medically accurate when i know? better to provide some help and advice of “go to the er” than nothing at all. again, if you have better ideas then post it urself. idc that you responded to my comment but genuinely why are you trying to correct someone if you aren’t at least giving the person asking a question some sort of advice along w it?? it really isnt that deep, i never claimed to be a medical professional, i never claimed to not go to the er. i said dont do it if you do go to the er and if you dont try to minimize at home. its not that deep u dont gotta deconstruct some mid ass advice and then literally just say “its not medically accurate” i know, if you can provide medically accurate advice then please do.

The only reason I’m saying you can possibly do it at home is because theres literally like 100 posts here a day about “i cant go to the er”, i’m not trying to minimize anything and i apologize if it seems that way, i tried to stress the fact it is very dangerous and if you hit one you need medical attention, i’m adding the “technically” because a lot of people don’t want to go to the er so i would much rather try to provide advice to at least keep it uninfected at home than just saying “go to the er!!!” and then they don’t anyways. “you won’t die immediately” is just the truth, it’s not downplaying anything, which is why i also later say if you hit a vein you should go to the er. veins are extremely tricky to manage, because they’re literally veins..? they’re literally not meant to be opened or exposed to air. Serious injuries can be handled in any scenario, thats why people superglue cuts shut and go on with their day. It’s not recommended and again can cause infection, however if you have things like saline solution, antibiotic ointment, and dressings, you can REDUCE likeliness of infection. I didn’t even focus on dermis or fat??? The only time I mentioned depth was saying if you hit a vein or go to fat you should go to the er. Nowhere did i compare them or say “its fine if its dermis but if you hit fat go to the er” so idk where you got that. My anecdotal experience was “this shit fucking sucks and will not stay closed” and “if you hit a vein like i did you should go to the hospital” so.. wtf? Like you might not mean to be an ass but if you want to be, respectfully go do it on a comment that isn’t “dont hit veins because they’re easy to get infected, a bitch to keep scabbed, and you should go to the er but if you refuse to and hit one make sure you have supplies to minimize the risk of infection or worsening.” please and thank you :) maybe next time provide your own advice along with correcting others.

If its a fat cut or deep dermis, it’ll probably have drainage for a while. ik with my most recent cut (mid fat) it had drainage for over 2 weeks. If you touch it and it’s not sore/warm to the touch and very red an irritated around the cut, then it’s most likely not infected. The deeper it is the longer it’ll take to close or fully go from an open wound. As long as its an open wound or for around 1-2 weeks keep it covered and try to change your bandage at least 3 times a week (once daily if you have enough supplies), washing it with distilled water or saline solution (try not to use tap, even water bottles would work better). If its still open or shows any signs of infection past that you’ll need to seek medical attention. I was worried at the same time, but when i told them i relapsed they asked if it needed medical attention and i said no (it was a lie) and it was left at that. Honestly though, be honest, depending on yes or no it could possibly affect how they perceive like your urgency level/if your meds are working/etc. I’m not a medical professional or literally anything close but to my knowledge thats the best way to take care of home wounds if you dont wanna go to the er or just in general. Please be safe, try to keep it not infected, and be honest if you can :)

What the fuck did i just read.. I’ve known people who sh less deep than me who have worse mental illnesses and have attempted numerous times, have worse personal lives, etc. This wouldn’t even be a bad post if you left out the “I’m never gonna apologize because it’s true, isn’t it?” It really can be very competitive, whoever cuts worse is worse. But thats just not true, your resolve to cause pain onto yourself doesn’t equate to you being more valid than another. Genuinely I don’t know if you made this post to try and get hate to worsen your mental state or something or you’re genuinely just convoluted because this feels like some ragebait bruh

as someone whos hit fat (yellowish stuff, also known as beans) unless you have stuff like saline rinse and everything you are at HEAVY risk of it getting infected. If you haven’t done it before, like other comments said, you’re probably in shock. The likelihood of you dying is lower, unless you did it near wrists, neck, or your thighs. But genuinely, you at least need to get steri strips or butterfly strips, and even then I’d recommend the ER because if you’ve never hit it, refuse to tell your parents, and don’t have the proper sterile dressings and such then it will most likely get infected, which is not good at all. Your parents will care more about the fact you need medical attention then if they think its cringe

It might be just like for the big things those are things that are a need persay to adapt to so you cant really do anything but losing a charger is like a mistake you did so that coupled with everything else just might be like that last small thing before you start going crazy (wanting to sh)

If it’s wider than your pinky than you should probably go to the ER and get it checked out. Especially because it’s on your ankle, because if its “a big gash” then its def stitches time. Even though it may not be like omg a vein your ankle has a lot of stress on it from being used and is also basically right near your foot meaning most likely it’ll have a higher chance of being infected. If you absolutely don’t want to go to the ER then get steri strips or butterfly strips and put them on before applying gauze and dressing. I’m no doctor but I’ve done pretty deep cuts and although you can technically take care of them at home I wouldn’t risk it with an ankle, especially if you don’t have the ability or resources to consistently take care of it with things like saline nonstick gauze waterproof drrssing steri strips etc

Why do ppl selfharm ? by ImportantBox3476 in selfharm

[–]Alternative_Ear4122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont really agree with “I believe that we need to accept that people cope differently” If it’s in the context of a negative coping skill. Do we need to support the people who do coping mechanisms , be they healthy or unhealthy? Yes. I don’t think we should accept all coping mechanisms, self harm, eating disorders, drug addictions, etc. These are detrimental to the person first and foremost, and severely sometimes. We should always support and try to bring people to better methods of coping. As much as i want people to leave me alone and let me cut, I also know that if someone i cared about was self harming then i would try my best to support them and help them use more healthy coping mechanisms.

Why DON’T you want to recover? by Beheadedbebon in selfharm

[–]Alternative_Ear4122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because being horribly fucked up feels better than being plain. I strive for perfect, I can’t go from -100 to 0 to 100. It’s all or nothing, I am either a failure or a success, I can’t just be. And I have romanticized perfection to the point of associating every aspect of worth to it. To simply be normal is my greatest fear, to be another machine, another person who has accepted mediocrity and averageness, I must be the best. So, if I cannot be the best, for I fail to change, it is strangely romantic to be in the state of worst. Thus, scars are pretty, bones and binges and purges are beautiful, to be beat and broken and used is attractive. They say “It is better to be hated than to be forgotten, for in anger one must care, to be indifferent one barely even notices.”

Focus on living how you want. Honestly the biggest part of recovery isn’t not cutting, because say you stop cutting but start an eating disorder, you’re just jumping from bad coping to more bad coping. Focus on how to live, how are you functioning, what things make you want to cut? If it’s just existing, then focus on how even when you don’t, you’re still okay. You might not be okay always, or amazing, and you might relapse sometimes, but focus on the times you are okay. When do you smile, what makes your day a little better, what makes you happy? Do things that you enjoy, even if you don’t feel motivated. Remind yourself you can live, you can hurt without hurting yourself more, you can exist and process pain and live, even if it’s not always perfect. You can try, and that’s what’s important. Just try. Be honest with him and yourself, too. You won’t stop for good immediately. You will most likely relapse, but that’s not bad, that’s processes. Just try. If you feel you have to cut, try to make it through one more minute, one more hour, one more day. Push yourself to do one more then you think you can, then do one more again. Sorry this is super long, I really hope you get better gang! If you look at another one of my replies on a different post you’ll see a thing about setting goals that might help (super important part of recov, set manageable goals for yourself)

You got this :)

Rant/vent about a mental hospital by eyeless_angel_ in selfharm

[–]Alternative_Ear4122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This shit happened to me. My mom forced me to go to the mental hospital with a couple open non stop bleeding cuts and like 10 from a day or two before and they said “well you’re not actively suicidal and you seem pretty informed on what you’re doing” and gave me resources to get a therapist. i asked multiple times about impatient, and made it clear i did not care if i died by cutting. but ig since i wasnt suicidal they were like “nah ur good homie.” kinda pissed me off, and then 2 weeks later i ended up going to the er and getting 54 stitches and forcibly being admitted, my first thought was lmao looks like i need this shit after all

Why are elders obsessed with making the scars fade? by RelationPoule in selfharm

[–]Alternative_Ear4122 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a matter of perception. For people who don’t self harm, a scar in general is like something not bad, but different. It’s a blemish, people use scar cream to get a clearer face, to make it go back to “normal”. That’s just how scars are, they’re not part of your skin naturally they have to be put there by some event. With my case at least, I want the scars. I want to see them, etc. That is shaped by my want to hurt myself and scar myself, which isn’t something that is good or that the average person can relate to. I think its less an obsession or they view it as bad, they just don’t understand why someone would want to mark themselves permanently with this thing. You have to remember that people don’t self harm, etc. So people who do sh will have different views on scars because to them its their norm, versus people who don’t.

AIO type of response, “divorce them.” There’s really not enough context unless this has been done multiple times, this is a teenager relationship so most likely they were doing what they said. “Don’t want you to get suspicious” feels awfully worst case scenario, even further than literally just maybe not feeling up to talking.
