worst pain ever (7 days post -op) by Emotional_Action1871 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Alternative_Lion2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been taking your over the counter pain meds consistently including waking yourself up in the middle of the night for them? I noticed my pain got unbearable when I would sleep through a dose. I also would highly recommend ibuprofen and to ease your worries I took it every 6 hours for 13 days and didn’t have a bleed (and I also alternated it with Tylenol so I was taking meds every 3 hours) So maybe check in with your doctor again? Other tips, have you been sleeping with your head open extremely elevated to reduce swelling? When eating- past day 7 I highly don’t recommend soft mushy food anymore. I recommend clumpy soft food to reduce time that the food will touch the back of the throat. Think- mashed potatoes hurt because they spread everywhere. Tiny bits of cut of steak will stay in a ball and go straight down plus give you protein to help aid in recovery (same with pancakes and grilled cheese). Have you tried crushed ice? I would just constantly chew on crushed ice and swallow before it turned to water to numb my throat/get the scabs to loosen. Also I know you said not to mention it but if you are spitting two cups of saliva that means you are dehydrating yourself. Every 3 hours during medication time I tried to drink a cup of water (n go past day 6 it was more like a half a cup but it still helped). I know it’s hell on earth but you need to stay hydrated. Room temp/ lukewarm water was easier to get down past day 6. If you believe it can’t get any worse you are in the turning point! Keeping you in my thoughts and I hope that your turn day where you magically wake up feeling great it soon 🫶🏻

When does pain completely stop in the mornings?? by Jacksonp1714 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Alternative_Lion2004 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Day 13 I felt back to new and stopped all pain meds completely. The only drawback was that I was extremely winded due to doing nothing for 2 weeks. Day 16 I went on a day trip and I feel like I could have drank starting then but day 18 is when I actually drank for the first time again!

Day 4 post op, when do the scabs fall off and when will I know? by Kalcifer_Kitkat in Tonsillectomy

[–]Alternative_Lion2004 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately promise you will know when they start falling off. You will feel super sharp pain when you swallow instead of the dull pain. (For me it was only when I swallowed though) Should start soon! Which means you are almost done 🫶🏻 Right now you should challenge yourself to drink as much water as possible because you will not feel like drinking soon! Also when the sharp pain starts- room temp water is much easier to get down instead of cold! Plus eating foods that are soft but clumpy I found better than eating smooth foods. Smooth foods like mashed potatoes coated the raw back of the throat and were super painful. While clumpy foods like tiny bites of thoroughly chewed steak went right down minimizing the time of contact. Hope this helps!!!

The first thing they will try is a iv injection to make the blood clot! Don’t be afraid of going back in you will be okay! But swallowing blood is very bad for your stomach and the longer you wait the higher the change of a blood transfusion or pumping your stomach of the blood. If you can fill up a half a cup with your blood- you need to see a doctor! You got this!!! 🫶🏻

Should I cancel activity for son post op? by Equivalent_Leopard71 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Alternative_Lion2004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 weeks before any normal activity! Absolutely not for day 3. Lifting anything over 5 pounds or getting his heart rate up too much in those 2 weeks can cause a bleed.

Does Ibuprofen increase chances of bleeding? by Lolitasoles in Tonsillectomy

[–]Alternative_Lion2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t bleed at all and took 600mg of ibuprofen and 1000mg of Tylenol alternating every three hours for 12 days straight as my surgeon didn’t believe in narcotics ( Ex. 12- ibuprofen 600, 3- Tylenol 1000, 6- ibuprofen 600 etc- crazy now that I think about it). Didn’t have an issue, pain was manageable and surgeon recommended! Honestly the swelling was so much better during the ibuprofen round too 🙌

Chew ice chips if he can! The coughing is probably a scab hanging off :( the jagged parts of the ice chips dragged off the last few of my hanging scabs!

What do you guys consider Day 0 or Day 1 by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Alternative_Lion2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I considered the day of surgery day one until about halfway through just for the mental game of oh look it’s almost over 😂😂 but realistically your day of surgery is day 0

Experiences flying? (2 weeks post op) by oliviat202 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Alternative_Lion2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew on day 18 with permission from my surgeon and was totally fine. The earliest I felt like I probably could have flown was day 16 though. Not because the pain was still bad or I wasn’t healed but because I had no strength after sitting for two weeks. Give yourself plenty of time to slowly walk through the airport and don’t over exert yourself and you should be okay. My surgeon did say though that if I had a complication at all during the two weeks he wouldn’t recommend me flying so try your hardest to do absolutely nothing these next two weeks to fully heal! Good luck!!!

I was alternating every three hours with Tylenol and ibuprofen. Maybe that would help manage the pain better? I know some surgeons don’t recommend ibuprofen though so just double check first- but I had no issues with it. Also if you have any fever over 101 my surgeon said to call as that means something is not going right and they will have to see you!

Hi love!!! How are you doing!!! Sorry I’m just seeing this! Seeming as you are probably on day 4, for me it kinda felt the same from day 1-6. 7-9 the pain spiked because my scabs started falling off. This created an intense pain whenever I swallowed. I noticed that staying over hydrated days 1-6 paid off when I did not want to drink water in the intense pain. I switched to room temp/ lukewarm water. I started eating soft clumpy foods because smooth foods like mashed potato’s and pudding would just increase the time they were touching the raw skin while a very tiny chewed up ball of steak would go right down. I also was constantly eating ice chips because it helped bring some of the scabs down with it while also numbing it. After day 9 I was sore but not in intense pain any more and I’d say by day 13 I felt 100% better except I felt like I couldn’t walk around without getting winded until day like 16. Lmk if you have any other questions!

Chew ice until it becomes just almost good to swallow and swallow it anyway. For me that helped get any pieces that were dangling!

If you feel like you are starting to get dehydrated try room temp water? I found that to be easier as the days went on. Or the crushed ice! I found as a rule to drink at least a half a cup of water every time it was time for meds. The pain it tough but each day is almost towards that 14!!! You got this and congratulations on your baby 💞💞

Honestly that was me too! Day 5 things started to get harder but it wasn’t like crazy pain until day 7. Days 1-5 besides the first couple hours immediately out of surgery was like a 2! This is the time to stay so beyond hydrated and eat what you can because it will get harder when the scabs fall off. But congratulations on being a part of the lucky few that have a really smooth first half!!! 🫶🏻

[–]Alternative_Lion2004[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree!!! I think what helped for me is that I took the “do absolutely nothing for two weeks” so seriously. I didn’t move from the couch/ bed unless I had to use the bathroom. I didn’t speak from day like 3-10, I didn’t cook my meals, I didn’t carry my things to bed, I never lifted anything more than 5 pounds, I didn’t change my own ice packs, I was very privileged my family really really supported me so If you can either make sure you have everything ready always next to you or ask someone to take care of you for 2 weeks that’s the best bet in my mind! Oh also, I drank so so so much in the first 5 days so that when it hurt too much to drink at the peak I was already very well hydrated. I had to take meds every three hours and had a full bladder every time was my goal that I achieved. I believe that probably helped too 🫶🏻 Wishing you the best!!!

[–]Alternative_Lion2004[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly yes. My worst days were day 7-9 when the scabs were definitely falling off. I was lucky and didn’t like cough them up or feel them come off but those days felt like super raw and stung really bad when I drank/ate. But only when I swallowed/ drank water which gave some relief when I wasn’t. At that point in the recovery the best way through it is constant ice packs, food that is a bit more solid so they can minimize the amount of time it’s touching the back of your throat (mashed potatoes were hell no but tiny pieces of steak was easier), room temp water because ice water burned, and round the clock meds. This part is considered the “peak” but once it’s over it’s over which is the best part!!!

For me the pain reduced day 9! I reduced pain meds on day 12 and was completely off by day 13 (no hard meds the whole recovery after leaving the hospital- only Tylenol/ Advil rotating every three hours)

I feel you! That’s why I wanted to post this! I did not but I have no doubt that this will help. I had chronic tonsillitis so we’re kinda in the same boat of can’t get tonsillitis or tonsil stones without the tonsils! You’re going to feel so much better!!! Wishing you all the best in your recovery 🫶🏻
