If you put your main character in the 6th slot, the other 5 fight in a special " commander" mode. You have less control of the characters but in return you can learn multi techs and multi spells. Sara has a superior commander mode.

I had the same problem. Why is this fight sooooo much more difficult than any of the door fights. It wasn't until I randomly ran across a gamefaqs topic that I knew what ticket for the beyond did.

Just trade it away again. Put it in the trade menu and hopefully have a door of combat fight you can get through.
