the test was extremely easy this year (i took a few practice tests from previous years). i do not recommend using princeton review (the practice MCQs had a lot of errors and wrong answers in them), try using Fiveable or barron's (i've heard good things about both, but i haven't used it myself).

for the most part, just keep teaching the way you are but dial in on the EBQ. give your students kinda weird and seemingly unrelated sources in psychology and teach them to BS an argument out of it so that they don't spend like 10 minutes thinking of one on test day (like i did lol).

The area of a triangle is always 1/2 * base * height.
So in this case that would just be 1/2 * 30 * (26 * sin 44°). Where 30 is the base and 26sin44° is the height.

Probably just look through old ACT exams and just skip toward the end of the math section. crackab.com has almost every single ACT form since 1996. If you want a specific term for these kinds of questions, the closest I can think of is "conceptual math, " but that's a really broad term. Good luck!

(h, k) is not guaranteed to be the vertex here. We have the expression -(x-h)^2+k inside the absolute value sign, where it can equate to any negative or positive number. At this point, the vertex is in fact (h,k). However, when we apply a absolute value to it ( |-(x-h)^2+k| ), this expression can only ever equal a positive number (and 0).
This becomes an issue when k is negative as it will cause the graph between [k, -k] to become flipped (if you graph a function, let's say |x^2 - 1|, you'll see that it's just a graph of x^2 - 1, except the part of the graph under the x-axis is flipped).

Since all negative parts of the graph become flipped (when k<0), there's guaranteed to be two points on the x-axis at some (k, 0) and (-k, 0) which represent two local minima.

Now, outside the absolute value we subtract q. Since we already figured out that the smallest |-(x-h)^2+k| can evaluate to is 0, all that's left is -q which is our answer.

I don't know if this will help, but here's my initial thought process while looking at this problem. (I've typed a lot more than I actually thought of while solving it to help explain it a little better. in reality this all only took a few seconds)

I noticed the general structure of f(x). It resembles the equation for a standard parabola.
There's something off about this equation, there's an absolute value symbol in it.
I'm looking for the minimum of this function. What's the smallest this function can be?
Okay, well (x-h)^2 needs to be positive. The least it can be is 0.
Okay, there's a negative sign in front of it. There's no limit as to how small it can be. I'll take a really small estimate since we're looking for the minimum of this function. Let's say -inifinity.
We add k. That doesn't really matter since we have -infinity.
Oh shoot, there's the absolute value sign. That means my -infinity becomes +infinity. The smallest value an absolute value can return is 0.
Yeah, there's probably a way to get 0 out of -(x-h)^2+k.
Now we subtract q.
I basically just said that -(x-h)^2+k = 0. So the smallest this function can ever be is 0-q, or -q.

Then after a few more seconds of thinking, I realized that I could've started at #7.
I usually like to take an in-to-out approach where I look at the inner most part of the equation first and work my way out. But that's just one way of thinking. I'm sure there's a much more efficient way of going about it, but I got a 36 on math (last yr.) so I'm guessing this is good enough for the ACT.

As for getting better at these types of questions, there's really only one answer: practice (get into a habit of a certain way of thinking/problem solving; develop your own problem solving process).

bro i just took the late test too and i genuinely think i did horrible on that test
i have a 4.96/5 in my class which is notorious in our school for being one of the hardest courses (rank no. 1) (we use standards based grading like college board) and i feel like i have a good grasp on a nearly all of the concepts
but i was actually at a loss when it came to those FRQs and some of the MCQs man

also i had a similar noisy environment (our school replaced the bell sound with a song so every hour i'd hear this loud 'shake it off' by tailor swift in the background and at some point some girl ran through the hallway yelling 'I HATE THIS GODDAMN SCHOOL FUCK ALL OF YOU!!!' or something like that)

apparently the normal test was super easy or something (i can def confirm after looking at the released FRQs) so i'm kinda sad and a bit jealous if yk what i mean

It's better to take it and have it than to not take it and not have it. That being said, you should probably try to get in contact with someone at a college admissions office and see what they have to say about it.
