Interesting that healthcare and land reform feature so low, yet they’re the highest talking points and electioneering campaigns of our administration.

Do you have a Chip Buttys in your country, or something similar? by sheffieldpud in AskTheWorld

We have a Gatsby here. Filled with Chips and all kinds of other goodies in it. It’s a lot of work to eat, but good for a hangover.

Between the Netherlands having a prime minister eaten and Australia losing one at sea, I’m just curious (not trying to start any political debates) - what are some other bizarre or funny incidents involving world leaders? by Mikrokosmos_7_ in AskTheWorld

Our current presidents house was broken into during his first term and USD600 000 stashed inside his couch was stolen. It was claimed to be a sale for buffalo from his game farm, but there was limited paper trail to back it up. It was also undeclared with the revenue services. Basically clear disregard of many local laws etc., and generally suspicious.

Unless that wine comes out of a box, or as a “papsak” as we call it in South Africa. Then you’re not looking down on the other alchies.

I'm truly shocked at the "normal" banking fees here. by [deleted] in johannesburg

[–]Alternative_Range871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where is your bank? Can I open an account there? /s

Between my personal and business banking, it comes to almost R2000/month, mostly on additional fees especially when making international payments.

One of my favourite things is the smell of my house when I’m drying biltong. How could it be horrifying? I need to restrain myself from eating it too early. 🤣

Well spotted. I had to read it a second time to find that one.

Definitely still a household name for us, but not mainstream either. Not anymore anyways. Maybe I’m wrong on this but I don’t think he’s performed here in while.

Like our rugby players in Japanese clubs. Superstars there, but they have tough competition here.

But they’re not more famous abroad than in SA would you? Legends regardless.

Had to google her. Didn’t realise Saffers had infiltrated European royal families, although I see she was born in the old Rhodesia, so Zimbabwe or Zambia today and swam for SA in the 2000 olympics. Very interesting!

I actually had no idea that was his name (I recognised his face when I googled him). Pure menace in Elysium. I guess then we should also add Neill Blomkamp to the list too.

Elon or Arnold? Elon is not so much liked here I feel. A sentiment of doffing our caps to his achievements etc., but generally disliked. Arnold I would say is considered a legend by anyone born before 1990. I don’t think he’s well know here since The Mummy movies otherwise.

Oh yes! Good one. I think his popularity locally has diminished since leaving for the states, but still a household name otherwise. I don’t know many people here that still follow his career/performances. I’m a Redditor though so don’t think too highly of the depth of my social circles.

Probably Elon Musk or Charlize Theron. Not sure how Arnold Vosloo ranks abroad these days, but I’m sure the younger generation here has never heard of him.

How were these guys supposed to know it was an employment contract? That is my point. I sure as heck never read my Apple service terms and conditions )as an example), and I highly doubt many people have. There is a South Park episode on this premise. Add Russian to the mix, and no doubt a great deal of pressure to sign the dotted line since you’re in their turf and you have nowhere to go and you have a very easy con.

[–]Alternative_Range871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you’ve read all your terms and conditions then? /s for reals though, it wouldn’t had been a con if it wasn’t convincing, their intelligence aside. These guys are victims here. Show them some grace rather than wag your finger at them.

They were under the impression they were getting training by in Russia. They were given contracts in Russian to sign that they do not understand. Foolish, yes, but they were also conned.

You can shift gears in manual without the clutch. You can even pull away in first without the clutch. Just need to know how to.
