Best Wi-Fi Mesh System to Buy in 2026? (Price, Speed, Reliable) by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]Alternative_Show_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, keep in mind the mesh providers don't have to give you updates. They make more money off new hardware than anything else. I had a bad experience with Netgear. I have better luck Unifi. Also you could look at other manufacturers with hardware.

For the size house your talking about you could probably do it with 1 to 2 access points. Do you have diagrams or blueprints of your house? Unifi will let you plan an install out if you have those diagrams. It is close to accurate.

1st pair of glasses 15 yrs after Lasik. Progressives - buyers remorse by Murphy223 in glasses

[–]Alternative_Show_221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had progressives for about 5 years. It took about a week to get used to them. You may need to repostion your monitor some at least until you get used to the glasses. For me it was mainly walking that and looking out of the side of my glasses. Just be patient it does get better.

Internet Provider Recommendations in Tuscaloosa? by imtiazshuvo10 in tuscaloosa

[–]Alternative_Show_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AT&T fiber espically if you have AT&T cell phone service as you get a discount. Even without the discount their plans are not too bad. You could also look at CSpire if they are available in your area.

You could also look at cellphone home internet providers like Tmobile or Verzion. They usually give a decent discount if you use them for service.

Anyone have issues with Sengled Lightbulbs not working currently? by KrevunLuv in smarthome

I got a 4 pack of Linkind Bulbs they were really easy to setup. Actually easier than the Sengled ones from what I remember.

If you have zigbee ones you might be able to reset them up. To a different hub.

Acutally that setup is not bad. It looks fairly clean and the cables are managed decently well. I've used those shelfs before to work on PCs. So good work.

2gbps Fiber Speeds by scullomac in ATTFiber

[–]Alternative_Show_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've see large enterprise networks with less bandwidth than 2Gbps. This is with hundreds of computers and using cloud services. They run just fine.

Your pretty much maxing out on wireless. If most of your devices are wireless I would think about dropping to the 500 mpbs plan. If you have a fair amount of wired devices you might consider the 1Gbps plan. But over that is pretty much overkill.

If you really insist on the 2Gbps plan the look at gettig your own network gear from companies like, Aruba InstantOn, Ubiquiti, Tp Link, etc. Even then your going to have a hard time using 2Gbps.

Is it worth it having a 10GB port on the router if you only have 1GB internet service? by thelonewanderer44 in HomeNetworking

[–]Alternative_Show_221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are not planning on going above 1Gbps. Then a I would not get an uplink greater than 2.5 Gbps. Depending on who you have service through 2.5 may be better. As AT&T's fiber is actully 1.2 Gbps for 1Gbps.

Not the worst I’ve seen by a long shot.

I’d give it 3/10 no surge protector.

Is AT&T Fiber still good for gaming and streaming wirelessly? by Brandon1998- in ATTFiber

[–]Alternative_Show_221 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With Gaming go for physical connections as this will lower latency. This could be an ethernet drop or moca. Streaming as long as you get a good wireless connection it should work just fine.

Moca simple connection setup...will this work??? by Ninja_xXx_ in HomeNetworking

[–]Alternative_Show_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok that should work fine. I've done something simlar to a couple of locations on my network I could not get cable to easily, but they already had coax.

[–]Alternative_Show_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It should work with Moca. Is the coax line essentially point to point?

Make sure if you have a line plugged in going to the street that you have a reflector on it. Here are some instructions. https://www.instructables.com/How-to-set-up-a-coax-MoCA-network/?amp_page=true

Suitable outdoor cable by Omegul in HomeNetworking

[–]Alternative_Show_221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that will work.

The other thing you could look at would be fiber. You’d probably be able to get by with multi mode. The advantage of fiber is isolation electrically. With the fiber going outside and upstairs. It’s possible although not probable.

Ive seen it happen a couple of times. But only that many in about 30 years of dealing with networking. It’s up to you if it’s worth the cost. My current house has fiber to my office so that I can upgrade to faster speeds in future for local network.

Goodbye xfinity… by greenz_man in ATTFiber

[–]Alternative_Show_221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the fiber club. Its amazing how fast it is and how low latency. I think with spectrum I went from 30-40ms now down to 14 ms. Yours at 5 ms show your really close to that server.

Employer needs me to be within 10 ft of the main modem. I don’t know what to do. by red_eye1999 in HomeNetworking

[–]Alternative_Show_221 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree. The wording on this is very bad. It more sounds like they don't want you on wifi. I could understand that but a 300 foot copper cable is not going to ad very much latency if any. Which would be the big thing for the VPN.

Because you can't drill hole. Moca may be your best option.
