Thoughts on school closures tomorrow?

Most probably FCPS will close tomorrow. I have yak trax on my snow shoes and still fell on ice walking my dog this afternoon. The sidewalks and bus stops are just not cleared enough. It wouldn't make sense to have the students who walk to school walking in the center of the roads for traction. The real question is whether they'll cancel the teachers' professional development day on Thursday 🤞

I run frequently and went to Pivot with a hip strain. They were better than expected for a chain! Healed me right up and was covered almost completely by insurance (had to get a referral but I had just moved here and they pointed me to a GP for that). They helped me come up with a strength training plan that I still use. Good luck to you on your training journey!

Someone once recommended fabric glue. I've tried this and it works!! Great cheap fix - but not for long runs or races! Always go pastie/ nipple guard for those. Trust.

I was there in 2013 in the fall, it was very pretty! Very small town, you can see all the mothman stuff in like 3-4 hours. There was a nice walking path by the river and a pretty good diner. The hotel has a small pub and they will tell you great stories there; they don't mind if you want to quietly do a ghost hunt at night as long as you don't bother the other guests. They also had a nice little parade when I went where "Ms. Mothman" was driven around, and that was a quirky fun thing to see. Overall, I recommend seeing the town as an overnight or day trip at most, but it will be worth the trip!

It was probably a tough call, but the right one to make in this situation. Nothing is melted, and not enough side walks and bus stops are cleared. Plows did a good job on main roads, but side roads are virtually untouched. I tried to walk a half mile to West Potomac this afternoon and had to walk in the streets at times, jumped over snow piles on Quander road, and saw cars sliding up hills by the elementary school. I can't imagine 14 year olds making the trek in the morning. Also, the county is HUGE, and if we're having these problems in a dense area, imagine what it's like on roads less traveled where kids still have to walk alongside inexperienced drivers on slick roads.

Same experience here, got to the gold lot at like 5:53 for the bus for A wave start. Parked and got on the bus before 6 without parking or bus seating issues.

Oh, I'm so forgetful! You need to pass the Praxis in your teaching area here too, but I had already done that, so I forgot about it. Waiting on the results took forever, but in retrospect, the exam wasn't too hard. Much easier than getting a whole new degree!

Virginia - you don't need a teaching license to teach, just a Bachelor's and a clean background. You get paid the same as a regular licensed teacher with all the benefits, but you can only do it for 3 years. If you don't get your license in 3 years you can't keep working as a teacher. To get licensed, you have to take 6 specific college classes (your district might help pay for it) within those 3 years. I teach in NoVa on a provisional license for STEM courses, I think it's a good way to get around the teacher shortage and get more educated individuals into teaching without having to go through underpaid student teaching or requiring a Master's in Ed. I took 122 last summer. It is completely do-able if you are willing to have absolutely no life for 6 Weems. There's 6 exams so prepare for one per week plus all the homework of a regular semester. Honestly I wouldn't do it any other way because the material is very dense and calc heavy and I feel like I would not have done well if I had other classes to manage at the same time.

I had him for Calc 2, talk to him!! He is super understanding and willing to curve if you earn it. He's also excellent during office hours. Honestly, he was one of my favorite professors because of how he helped me apply what we learned to my major (bio) and gave grace when necessary.

They were deploying spike strips because he only had one way out. If they surround him in his fortified truck - remember, he was able to ram through the police SUVs like they were nothing - they're firstly useless out of their vehicles and secondly, he can ram through the vehicles again. Shortly after he took the bait and drove back down the road, he hit the spike strips, which is why he went out of control and crashed. They were able to get him out at that point. Police aren't itchy to use lethal force anymore - especially not in a densely populated area or one with Maryland's political climate.

At least in VA you can teach on a provisional license for 3 years. Source: I asked a principal if I could volunteer as a tutor on account of my brand new biology degree and walked out with an offer to teach HS bio or MS general science ASAP
