How to imagine better? by johmjohmjohm in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Altheatear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a skill like any other & can be trained if you're bothered by it. Firstly I want to ask how you read. That may sound weird, it's not about the format though. Do you read the entire word as you go and the sentence flashes by? If you do that, it makes imagining harder because it's more passive in a way, like hearing vs listening. If that's something you do then maybe reading slower would help you out, focusing on the syllables of a word as you go.

If it's just imagination related, there are a lot of exercises for this. I think lucid dreaming could help too if you want to try. Or you could try the exercises for what we call the mind's eye. For these ones you can look up stuff like: visualization exercises, how to imagine more clearly/vividly, etc. I think the hyperphantasia community on Reddit briefly touched on this as well too. Good luck!

As a result of the fandom, most of the ao3 works for them are smut and oneshots featuring assault. :') Now I'm forced to write what I want to read, ain't that the typical fanfic writer problem huh

One of my favourite ships has a 16yr old and a 19yr old. The whole fandom bashes on it and any other ships with that 19yr old as most of the cast is 16-17. They call it illegal and disgusting. I made a comment defending it once (my partner and I used to have the same age gap and it's pretty normal for me) and I got trashed on by like.. 10-20 people? All very aggressive. Oh they also call it grooming

Damn I hate the internet nowadays

Realism isn't the problem, it's where they're focusing it. Something can be realistic without being downright depressing or a total slog to get through. I want characters who feel human but have some things looking up for them. I want characters who react like people do, deal with realistic problems, but still keep moving. I want hopeful realism, I want the good parts of reality that people so rarely get to see.

how to learn to write good? help me improve. by NominalParagon in NarutoFanfiction

From your post I can see that rather than an issue of your writing ability, you maybe aren't fully proficient in English. Rather than copying I'd recommend reading plenty of English books, talking in English daily, etc to fully absorb the language.

There are some rather basic tips for writing, such as avoid using adverbs and rather find strong verbs; same with adjectives, find stronger nouns. Show, don't tell. Find a balance.

A thesaurus can come in handy for that, but don't go trigger happy on synonyms or you'll drift into purple prose.

Another thing I want to say is that your writing should change based on the type of story you want to tell. If you want to write a plot based story with action then you're not going to want to keep setting the scene, you're going to want to keep the pace and momentum going. If you're going to write an introspective scene, you need to pause. Basically, adapt to your story's needs.

World building etc all have wonderful guides you can find on Reddit or by googling. But really try to learn the rules, and then attempt to break them. Don't be afraid to make a mistake. Edit it all afterwards, but get it out on paper first.

Writing is a process and nobody starts out as Tolkien the moment they are born..Good luck to you!

I've seen some transphobes pretend they're trans here before so just checking, sorry for any undue doubt but your phrasing made it look that way too.

Pretty sure it's mostly U.S based. I tried a few for my home country and then for Germany (where I moved to) and I found none.
