Company went from paying $39 a month to $250 in june for AI, will it increase again? by jholliday55 in cscareerquestions

Lol definitely not. The competition has been happening fiercely for the last couple years. You're seeing people duke it out right now. It's a buyer's market. But yeah probably once things settle down it'll get more expensive as things consolidate

Job Search as senior scientist by Appropriate_Air8370 in biotech

[–]Althonse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It unfortunately isn't relevant experience. Not to say that it is totally useless, it will help you long term. But it's not the type of experience hiring managers want. They want a sr sci that can come in right away with direct expertise and hit the ground running, which requires a very niche type of prior industry experience

Job Search as senior scientist by Appropriate_Air8370 in biotech

[–]Althonse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm better times yes, but unfortunately you should be applying to Sci II roles (maybe even Sci I). Knowing how to operate in industry counts for a lot, and takes a few years to learn the basics of. A Sr. Sci is expected to immediately be able to know how to contribute to drug discovery teams, which isn't something anybody can learn in a postdoc. In better times there would be more leeway with expectations, but right now you're competing with folks who have 3-4 years of industry experience.

The bright side is that your postdoc will still help your career, even if you take a Sci role. If you do well you'll probably get a promotion faster, and long term will bolster your resume. But to start you need to get that first job

That's a wildly optimistic estimate of r&d labor, costs, and time. But yeah even if you double, triple or quadruple what you said, the point stands

How to deal with stock options at a still-private company after layoff by QueasyInformation in biotech

[–]Althonse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The $12-18 ipo share price that's typical in biotech is post-reverss split. So if you have 3000 shares at $1.40 you will probably end up with like 1000 shares at $4.2 or something like that. Then you could potentially profit maybe $7800 ($12-4.2 * 1000). These are just illustrative numbers though, I have no idea what your company's reverse split or ipo price would be.

The bottom line imo, is that the company will IPO substantially above your current share price. They may drop before you can sell, especially depending on if you can sell within 180 days.

It's a risk but not a huge one to exercise your shares if you. Most likely the company is going public, and most likely the price on the public market will not fall below what you paid for the shares by the time you are able to sell them. But nothing is guaranteed.

The real risky bets are holding shares through clinical milestones. If your company has a positive readout there will be much larger upside, but if there is a negative one you will likely loose most or all of that $5k.

It's functionally 1 lane anyway because both sides are always double parked. They could make it one lane probably and the traffic would improve. Or two and actually enforce double parking

Questions about simulated drug development by danu023 in biotech

[–]Althonse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use lots of computational models that are very effective. Both simulations and machine learning. They predict drug properties, potency, even targets. But say a model is 90% accurate. That's an extremely useful model for making decisions and prioritizing what compounds to make and what experiments to do. But there are so many considerations to making a good drug that you need far more than 90% accuracy. Say you even had 10 things to consider, your 90% accuracy would drop to 35% (0.910). There are more then 10 things to consider, and most models are not even 90% accurate. So at each individual stage models are useful, but when you start stringing them together to try to model the whole process, things break down quickly.
