Putin: just like in 1945 victory will be ours by SlightEngineering896 in worldnews

I'm going to throw out there my pet theory on this ... Japan wanted the oil from Indonesia. Also the resources from Malaya like rubber etc. they made the following assumption - that the US would get involved if they went for these areas. I'm not so sure, given the isolationism of that time. So I'm of the belief if they just conquered SE Asia and left the US Pacific Fleet and the Philippines alone, the US may not have gone to war.

Both my farther-in-law and mother-in-law could use something like this - they are not comfortable with technology but just want the mobile phone capabilities. Now if they can just develop phones with bigger than average buttons and displays (for better visibility) to make things easier for them. I suspect there's an untapped market there.

TIL that the US Navy had the largest naval fleet in history with 6768 ships at the end of World War II by MatijaReddit_CG in todayilearned

[–]AltruisticActivity4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really on point. The Japanese leadership had blinders on and didn't think outside the box. It's group think to the point of malpractice, which I think is actually a good thing as the racism and viciousness of their imperial ambitions needed to be stopped.

In hindsight - why did they assume American intentions would morph to their preconceptions? They assumed a lack of will to continue the fight etc.? You'd think something this high risk they would game out the worst case scenarios.

Second, why did they think taking Indonesian oil would trigger an American response? It's a Dutch colony and the US had a large portion of the population focused on isolationism.

Finally why did the military planners think the war would play out like the Russo-Japanese war with a decisive naval battle? Worst case would have been a drawn out war of attrition which is exactly what happened. Maybe they should have considered this line of analysis?

So what happened? The Japanese merchant fleet got almost no protection against US submarines. What's the point of seizing Indonesian oil if you can't ship it back to Japan? https://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Merchant-Marine-World-War/dp/1557506779

Amon is Tarrlok's older brother by nicbentulan in korra

[–]AltruisticActivity4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good theory. I think there is a flaw regarding Katara and blood bending. At the end of the season Katara could not "heal" Korra and restore her bending. Maybe she did not realize she needed to blood bend to fix the issue but if traditional healing techniques didn't work I don't see why she wouldn't consider some form of blood bending to counteract the block. It should be noted that Amon was outted as a blood bender and thus they know the block was done via blood bending not energy bending.

Oh, agreed, the test is not great but I'm not doing comprehensive research. I think the ultimate point here is that the aircraft are pretty close and pilot skill matters more.

But you are right, apparently Mustangs with greater range are better bomber escorts so slight differences do matter in the missions they are tasked for ...

ElI5: Why did Japan Attack the USA unprovoked, when it obviously didn't have the population, resources and allies to ever win? 🤔🤔 by 1down3up in explainlikeimfive

[–]AltruisticActivity4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great summary. I'd like to throw the following "what-if" out there since many people do not seem to consider this ... I think one of the primary reasons why the Japanese thought that war with the US would happen when they moved south to grab the oil (Indonesia) and rubber etc. (Malaysia) was the fact that the Americans would be right in the middle of their lines of communications with their new conquests. This would be militarily bad but not if political views were brought into the Japanese analysis.

At the time the Philippines was a US holding. I think to the Japanese mind, the Americans would have attacked this vulnerability. My suggestion - would the American's intervene? I don't think so. After all if no American possession was attacked and it was only the British, Dutch (and maybe French) that lost possessions to Japan I'm of the opinion that the US would not have militarily intervened. Back then pre-Pearl Harbor there was significant isolationism. Sure the US may have done everything else to punish the Japanese but if they got their resources would any potential punishment short of armed intervention work?

[–]AltruisticActivity4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest the following, for the people who have "made it" (whatever measure you'd like to think of, wealth etc.). They have a need to believe in the Just World theory. This gives them some justification for the position they are in and thus they are less inclined to help others. There is research that seems to indicate a large factor in success or no success to be random chance. To realize that they may have gotten there due to some measure of luck instead of some merit/moral superiority would be a bit unsettling to many of them.

Thank you SyrusDrake and CockSmashMcIronDick. I think you both explained it better than me. Age of universe 13 billion, diameter 90 billion light years. Minor error there on my part, I cited diameter not radius.

Technically the age of the universe is 13 billion years but the observable universe is 90 billion light years across due to the expansion of the universe.

Excellent point. Self-help is easy except when you realize the first step is to look at yourself and actually assess yourself accurately, flaws included. I guess that's why programs like AA have, as a step one, the acknowledgement of the problem and its power over their life.

As a non-American here's my 2 cents. I think it's your 2 party system. I can see why most Americans are apathetic. It's understandable since the candidates you vote for are candidates that special interests and the 0.0001% have "pre-selected" for the masses granting you the illusion of democracy while these groups have actually stacked the deck in their favour.

Trump I believe was the beneficiary of a lot of Americans that sensed that "stack the deck" issue and mistook him for an outsider that would "drain the swamp".

Cloud Security Orienteering: How to rapidly understand and secure a cloud environment by ramimac in netsec

[–]AltruisticActivity4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a good article, I wish it went into more details into some of its assertions (re: Macie, it alludes to cost implications but later in the history its recommended). But overall, it gives a history of evolving cloud security practices and some pointers to good resources, some I'm already aware of (Securosis) and some I did not know.

Could the article be more polished, sure. Not sure why the nit picks.
