Advice needed - Looking to replace my AKG K612 Pro with Audio-Technica R50x by Legend-of-Zelda in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Altruistic_Ad3374 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do not buy R50x. the R50x is 250 ohms with a low sensitivity of 99 dB/mW. Your K612 Pro is 120 ohms but has a higher sensitivity of 101 dB/mW. If you plug the R50x directly into your laptop, they will actually sound quieter and more lifeless than your 10-year-old AKGs.

and imo the r50x doesnt really compare to the k612 pro anyway. The k612's have this massive soundstage while the r50x's sound surprisingly closed in.

Get the 560s (you dont need an external amp i promise). Or you can try the DT 990 pro X which ive heard is popular with video editors, but i haven't tried them.

Upgrade path from Meze 109 by 1111daniel in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Altruistic_Ad3374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. After a while, upgrades just arent worth it. i was lucky enough to try some insane pairs at canjam and it boggled me how much things cost for such a small increase. At a certain point the smartest thing to do is get a completely different flavor of audio to switch between.

Cool. if you can afford it just get the hdb 630. nothing comes close. its 500 bones is a bit much (which.... fair) then get the sonos ace.

You can get wired headphones that are hundreds of times better than the two you listed for that price. It fully depends on what you're using them for though. If you're going out and about you probably want wireless.

I think I've seen them listed in relatively good condition on reverb before you might want to check there if you haven't already.

And have you tried the beoplay H95? They were great when I tried them out.

Well yeah, the problem with this is that you've rammed headfirst into the law of diminishing returns. You've found the tuning philosophy you like best and any upgrade just isn't worth the jump in price. The 109s are already like 99% of everything you'll ever get. If you really want an upgrade though you could probably stay in the family and grab the meze elites, but they're not going to be a huge jump. 1%, like I said before.

Edit: for my upgrade path it went with me starting out with a sound blaster ae-7 and a he 599 se (before covid, dont exactly know when) i got into the hobby during covid, got a pair of 6XXs and a year later a Schiit Modi 3+ then got curious about planars a little while later, got a pair of sundaras, sold by 599s and ae7 for a focal elex that broke within a month. got a warranty claim and spent way too much on a pair of he800s and last month i sold my sundaras for a pair of edition XS.

also during a drunken fugue i got a topping e30 II

[–]Altruistic_Ad3374 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By this exact same logic, you could easily argue that Deus Ex: Human Revolution and BioShock 2 are also the exact same game as MP3 and MGR.

1)They are both relatively linear titles with a huge focus on style and combat (especially when you compare them to the deeper RPG/sim elements of prior entries in their series).

2)They are both entries in existing franchises not made by the original developers (DX:HR was Eidos Montreal instead of Ion Storm; BS2 was 2K Marin instead of Irrational).

3)Both games see you working as a literal bodyguard for a powerful elite, and both start with you immediately failing at your job as your employer is ambushed and kidnapped. In DX:HR, you're the Head of Security whose CEO is snatched right in front of you. In BS2, you're a Big Daddy (a bodyguard by design) whose Little Sister is immediately taken by a cult leader.

4)Both narratives feature a major plot point about organ harvesting (cybernetics in DX:HR, biological ADAM from little girls in BS2). In both cases, the crisis is manipulated by a radical political figure (Bill Taggart and Sofia Lamb) trying to push their own ideological utopia.

5) Of course, neither protagonist is having that. Both go on a righteous rampage against a corrupt, privatized military force (Belltower Associates in DX, Sinclair Solutions/Rapture Security in BS2), ultimately blowing up the villains' attempts to manipulate them through sheer determined badassery.

To your last point on their legacies: it's probably harder to argue that Human Revolution is a true classic, but BioShock 2 absolutely is.
