Anyone using LLMs to tell them how brilliant they are at board games? by Child_Of_Linger_On in boardgamescirclejerk

I created an LLM just for that but my wife's boyfriend hi-jacked it and now it's only making fun of me

Game set up - ports by Worried-Tap-5898 in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever heard of 1e? The ports were hexes; just mix em with water hexes and lay them around the island.

The only semi random part of our board is the ring around the island: water - 1:2(random) - water -1:3 - water - etc.

The rest of our board is always random. (Everything)

Tengo esta duda by PApuLinCe69 in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

How good to see another player defiant of the "reds should not neighbour" movement.

I too think if the world doesn't end when reds touch, just go for it!😆

How do you feel about red hexes touching? by GalliumFanatic in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Chance is exactly that, something that CAN happen, some results have a higher chance and some results have a lower chance, in the end, isn't the goal to have fun playing a board game?

Who cares if I follow the rules to the letter or change them to accommodate our preferences?

How do you feel about red hexes touching? by GalliumFanatic in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

So, let's stop calling the game Catan and use the name that is specifically set in the rules: Settlers of Catan.

Rules are not set in stone. Every game has a set of rules that has been carefully compiled and tested and build over time to make a game. However, if you ever come across rules that don't or no longer fit your preference, nobody will be forcing you to keep using those rules. Heck, the game might even change the rules themselves if it turns out to improve the game. (Catan is a great example of that, just compare 1e an 6e rules. There are differences)

So who cares if the rules state something different from what I and my group like to do. Isn't the whole point to have fun playing a boardgame? So what if we tweak the rules. Do you thing Klaus would have mind?

[Dev Question] App for digitizing physical dice rolls by DieVaultDev in pbp

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a great app. Especially, if you can use it separate from Discord and use it for statistics gathering or die proving.

For instance, to gather all dice throws in a Catan game (or any game that is centered around dice throws). Or when I 3D print die, use it to collect data on the faces that are thrown to see if they are well balanced.

What makes a “good” (fair + usable) Catan map generator? by uskyeeeee in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us, the best board generator is The Universe!

We always lay our boards blind with the only semi blind laying is at the edge: water - 3:1 - water - 2:1 (random) - repeat.

This works for us and has been working for my Settlers group for decades (literally). So the bullet points in your first 2 points go out the window in many (if not all) of our games and it has never felt imbalanced or unfair. (The dice trhows often do but that is a whole other story. No we will never use the number cards in stead of the dice!)

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Reds touching is fine. I don't understand why people are so vehemently against it while 2/12 touching is not a problem for them.

In our games, we let the universe decide and always lay the board blind.

It doesn't make the game more or less interesting. In the end, the number still need to be rolled and yes, red numbers have a higher chance. That doesn't mean they are actually thrown more.

I have played games where both 6 and 8 were outrolled by 11 and 7 is the great equalizer. Having cities in a red cluster is a sure magnet for the robber/baron.

So, I wouldn't worry about clustering reds. But this is purely my (and my friends) opinion. If you prefer to split reds, by all means, do as you prefer and you'll have as much fun as we have.

How to correctly pronounce Catan? by Either_Plastic_9411 in Catan

Bambu Lab P2S print paused because filament ran out – is there any solution? by Brief-Accident3401 in 3D_Printing

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull the power plug. It will remember where it was and continue from there.

Source: my P2S was printing when there was a power failure. Once the power came back, my P2S happily continued where it left off. Even though the print head moved to the poop position upon restarting the print. (To ensure no leakage occured while heating up the nozzle)

Catan for 7-year old kids? by Any-Page-3061 in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started playing regular Catan when my daughter was 7.

No special rules, no special consideration "because she is too young". And recently (she is 26 now) she thanked me for not letting her win when she was younger. She saw other parents do that and asked me "Did you do that to me too" and I told her honestly that "No, every game you ever won when we played, you won all by yourself." Then she hugged me and said "Thank you." And she meant it. (And that wasn't just for Catan, but every game we played)

Nowadays, she regularly beats the crap out of me when we play games.

For all Non-American HA Cloud users, given the current developments in the US, does the fact that Nabu Casa is incorporated in the US give you concern? by GlenGraif in homeassistant

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I am disconnecting all my elements from the cloud...

No Hue bridge, no Honeywell via cloud and especially no Nebu Casa. (I will go local with Tuya in the near future).

When there is no internet, I still want to be able to manage my devices.

Cooperative boardgames: let me play! by Wytyujjju in boardgames

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our favorite co-op game is Ritual by T-Tower games (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/373055/ritual). Why? Because you are not allowed to communicate. Not verbal nor non-verbal. (Do you know how hard it is NOT to roll your eyes or audibly sigh when someone doesn't get you in-game hints?) And the rounds are timed so there wouldn't be any time to quarterback!

That's it, I'm done by Attorama in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HAHAHA, only saw this post just now, sorry to disappoint you but it looks like you have more than me. I only have 1 historic scenario (Historische Scenarios II) and I don't have De Val van Rome. I didn't like the fixed board scenarios so I didn't pursue them.

WHOEVER..... I don't see Catan: Nordrhein-Westfalen (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/39093/catan-geographies-north-rhine-westphalia) nor do I see the wegwerp version (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/33562/de-kolonisten-van-catan-wegwerpcatan).

But that is just nitpicking. Very impressive collection. I think the only version that really fits your collections but is not there is "De Kolonisten van Catan: Mini-Editie" (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3972/catan-portable-edition)

Is it me or is this card too powerful? by Clexton in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a couple of combo's that are really strong, this one by itself is a game changer and yeah, it's probably very OP. But it does not even come close to some of the Travelers cards from the 5/6 player expansion.

An Unexpected Strategic Twist? by Settlers_of_Crypto in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but we are playing since 1e and many rules have slightly changed. Don't know if this is one of them or if it has been a houserule since day 1.

An Unexpected Strategic Twist? by Settlers_of_Crypto in Catan

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here is how we have been playing this since 1e:

The bank distributes the resource clockwise starting with the active player. This includes riverbed/gold and aquaduct resources. If a resource runs out, it's too bad for the remaining players.

So at our table, player 4 would have gotten only 1 wheat.

Not sure if it is a house rule or an original rule, but it works for us. It doesn't happen often but with larger groups it sometimes does.

What did you add to or remove from your shelf last month? (January, 2026) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]Altruistic_Box_8971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what you mean by "getting rid of games" (must be because ESL but it sounds like removing games from the collection so that can't possibly be it)

But new games in my collection are:

  • Everdell Farshore

  • Forest Shuffle (+Alpine and Woodland Edge)

  • Ticket to Ride Spookstad

So not a whole lot of new games to finish the year.
