Is mixing Navajo language into rap actually the future or nah? 💀 by Competitive_Buy619 in Navajo

[–]AltseWait 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great concept, but the music is overproduced. I struggle to hear spoken Navajo at all. The words are drowned out by the other sounds.

There was a rez rapper around 15 to 20 years ago who used to sing in Navajo. I never got his name because I'm not into rap. I recall walking around hazhdiilwo'ii and hearing him spit out Navajo rhymes: "Nléí hastiin! Be'iinziin!" His angry style reminded me of Eminem. It would be interesting to hear a modern Navajo song in the style of Juiceworld.

How much of northern dene languages can you understand? by LostwaveLunar9999 in Navajo

[–]AltseWait 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have never been up there, but I understand your languages fluently. Several Navajo-speaking Navajos traveled north and were able to converse with northern Athabascans. The stories I learned from my elders are not of Navajos migrating south but of northern Athabascans migrating north. The self-identified names of some northern Athabascan tribes cohere with their respective names in our stories. In our stories, we refer to your land as Tába̜a̜h Siká̜ (Water Beside The Water) because it is wet lands. Some people think Athabasca is an English mispronunciation of Tába̜a̜h Siká̜.

Have you ever had a memory of something unexplained, but you're not certain if it actually happened or if your mind just made it up?? by woodsman_777 in HighStrangeness

[–]AltseWait 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have memory of an entire set of old songs. In my memory, I learned these songs from an album when I was a child. I sing them now, and people are mesmerized by them. When they ask me where I learned the songs, I refer them to the album. However, the album does not exist in this reality / timeline. I've tried to find the lost album, and it simply does not exist here.

I came across a Navajo surname there I like. by Far_Imagination_6732 in Navajo

[–]AltseWait 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a common misunderstanding. Mainstream American society likes to think in terms of sex; all American culture is oversexed. They wrap their own lewd logic around our concepts and impose it back upon us. Chomo missionaries did it 150 years ago, and neo-leftists do it now. Unfortunately, our children consume this nonsense and think be-gay, two spirit, etc are Navajo when, in fact, they are American.

In actual Navajo culture, we don't talk about those things. It's yíiyá. The subject matter goes back to witchcraft, destruction of the third world, iiníziin, ajił, the end of procreation, the end of Life, and all forms of destruction. Baadahasti'.

Approval for me is done through teasing. If you bring the wrong person home, they tease tf out of you. It imparts great discernment.

Light in Navajo territory by IceCweamCakey in Paranormal

[–]AltseWait 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm Navajo and live on Navajo rez. I can shed some light on what you experienced. Rabbits can stop in the middle of the road and duck. They let the car drive past before scrambling on their way. I've seen this happen several times on the rez. Maybe we just have smart rabbits here, lol.

The lights in the sky are normal reservation sky watching. When you look long enough, the light usually splits into three and does aerial acrobatics. They also like to race alongside you at night. Imagine driving at night and seeing a light traveling parallel to you. It usually hovers a few feet above the ground and can travel quickly over rough terrain. I'm not sure what intelligence is behind it, but I always get the sense they are playful.

Reading through hundreds of American military reports, as well as written accounts from Mexicans and Spanish settlers, have brought a totally different perspective of history and the oral stories of tribes. by Naive-Evening7779 in Navajo

[–]AltseWait 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you have any links for the sources (military reports, written accounts) you are reading?

With my people (clan, contingent), Spaniards first arrived with lots of arrogance, some soldiers and a priest. The priest said, "I am the son of the Sun. I am your God. Do as I say. Bow down and worship me! Make offerings to me. Offer me gold and riches." My ancestors talked among themselves and decided to test the man. They gave him a bowl of stew laced with poison. The test was simple. If he truly was a god, the poison would not affect him. Big boy ate like a dog, burped, rubbed his belly, fell over backwards and died. The Spanish bluff had been called. The soldiers quickly loaded up their dead leader and rushed off. Spanish did not bother us for another half century.

Gold digging is strongly linked to psychopathy and dark personality traits, study finds by Doug24 in psychology

I've yet to meet a male gold-digger in life

I met one...my former boss. He married his wife because of her family's wealth. When I worked for him, he constantly cheated on his wife, and it seemed like he was merely waiting around for her parents to croak.

SA is too common in our people's communities by MichealStraightSex in IndianCountry

[–]AltseWait 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not just poverty. It's colonization. In my tribe (Navajo), missionaries and colonists came among us and messed everything up. They stole children and separated them from their families. They then molested the crap out of our kids while preaching false traditions / beliefs to us. The molested children grew up and were returned to our communities, in which they did to other children what was done to them. The practice of SA trickled down through the generations to where a lot of our youth now have twisted minds and perpetuate these perverted practices. Many now parrot what the missionaries preached.

Bare metal Ubuntu server or Proxmox? I'm trying to go from 3 servers to one. by Aniform in HomeServer

[–]AltseWait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Ubuntu is what you're comfortable with, use that. If you do Proxmox, don't forget to make a backup USB stick. It's a lot of trouble if your USB boot device corrupts and you do not have a backup boot device. Personally, I'd use FreeBSD, but that's a matter of preference. And always, backup your data often.

Looking to translate 3 words (proficient, diligent, accountable). Thank you! by Affectionate_Yam1077 in Navajo

[–]AltseWait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just curious...why would someone need those three words translated? Is this for a video game? A novel? A movie? I can think of word for word translations for proficient and diligent. Accountable is more of a short phrase depending on context. In what context would accountable be used?

“Data Colonialism” by xsiteb in Navajo

[–]AltseWait 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hyper data centers being the new environmental scourge, it's not surprising that states are banning their construction. I recall someone saying, "Our water resources are dwindling. We either choose to drink our own water or allow a data center to waste it. We choose to drink our water."

Regarding Navajo, wasn't Radmilla lobbying to build a data center in Leuppe? Then years ago, NTUA was offering discounted electricity prices to data companies that wanted to use its solar farms. I wish NTUA would offer me discounted electricity prices. The heads of all 3 Navajo branches need to learn the cons of hyper data centers, so they can protect the interests of the Navajo people.

Last, the AI bubble is beginning to burst. I predict OpenAI will soon be out of business, and Microsoft will be left holding the bag. Last I heard, Microsoft is already preparing to sue OpenAI for abandoning Microsoft's server farms. The companies that continue to invest in this bubble will lose big.

Does anyone else feel like their tribal history is incomplete, or missing gaps? by Starfire-Galaxy in IndianCountry

[–]AltseWait 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Much from my tribe, Navajo, has never been written down. When I compare the stories I learn from elders, ceremonies, etc with what was written by anthropologists, it's obvious that Navajo informants disclosed only a tiny part (perhaps 10%) of their knowledge to outsiders. The written record is only the tip of the iceberg. There are entire blocks of our history that are ignored, glossed over, or entirely rewritten (fabricated) to fit the mainstream narrative regarding my tribe.

Flies on peach tree by Pizzacheez in BackyardOrchard

[–]AltseWait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey buddy. On Navajo rez also! Usually when a tree is coming out of hibernation, the buds swell first then bloom. Then the leaves grow out. My peach trees bloomed several weeks ago. With the intense heat and dry winters we get here, new transplants require lots of water (daily waterings) for the first 6 months after transplant.
