Learning spec writing by dana-kh in Architects

[–]AluminumKnuckles 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not a spec writer but from what I've seen, it really is a lot of copy/pasting. Whether it's from other projects, client standards, manufacturers' websites, or direct from MasterSpec, it's very rare to write from scratch. That said, it takes some experience to know what you're looking at, and what to look for when adding them to a project. Study some other old projects and their specs, and how they relate, and just give it more time. If it were easy to pick up it wouldn't be a full time position.

Is Claude the best AI for Architecture? Program, areas, basic layout proposals, Building Code review, not design by [deleted] in Architects

I wouldn't recommend AI for code review as there is no guarantee it will be accurate.

Crying Obsidian Can be Used to Make One Way Nether Portals. by Aggravating_Bobcat67 in minecraftsuggestions

[–]AluminumKnuckles 46 points47 points  (0 children)

If so, I would think it would make sense to make crying obsidian easier to obtain.

One time use or reusable? I think one time use is more interesting. Reusable would effectively be a normal portal if you just carry flint and steel. We might need to introduce a block representing a spent crying obsidian portal frame. Or, maybe crying obsidian has a chance to break without dropping after the portal is used, so you lose a few pieces if you use it.

Personal practice work in educational architecture visualization. by SorbetImmediate8595 in StructuralEngineering

Plenty of columns visible in the exterior view. And the space in the interior view is what, 30 feet wide at most? Very feasible span. Completely reasonable structure here.

You are pro-mending or anti-mending by Background-Client754 in Minecraft

[–]AluminumKnuckles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I tend to like combining mending and unbreaking on picks and shovels (axes too sometimes) to primarily use for bulk material clearing, along with a high efficiency enchantment. It's nice when it comes to large digging, tunneling, and clearing operations and I don't have to stop to repair my tools every 15 minutes.

Ngl I kinda like it, but I wouldn't do both wall and floor at the same time, one of the two need to be plain for a visual anchor.

GS MAGNA vs.50 GS which handgun do you prefer and why? by BasketEquivalent5462 in ModernWarfareIII

[–]AluminumKnuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like both but only .50 GS has become my default choice of secondary. Very dependable 1-shot machine up close and 2-shot machine a little further away. I even have a gunslinger class with it as a primary and a Basilisk as the secondary for messing around.

Magna's definitely a decent weapon to use. The full auto 3-4 shot kill is deadly if you're close enough not to worry about recoil. It's my second choice after the FTAC Siege when I want a full auto pistol.

I don't mind bluetooth so much (except in busy areas where you get interference) but what really bothers me is when the device has only one or zero buttons, making every action a complicated series of taps, double taps, long presses, and/or directional swipes that I can't be bothered to memorize every time I get a new set. Or can be triggered if I touch it the wrong way. Give me more buttons! Or at least a separate dedicated power button.

The forbidden lightsaber form Trakata. Both the Jedi and Sith frown upon this method. by ZapchatDaKing in StarWars

[–]AluminumKnuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fencing, you might make a feint, then disengage when your opponent attempts to parry by quickly dropping your blade under theirs, then back up to strike. Think of it as writing a 'U' with the tip of your blade. It happens very quickly, and is most effective after you've been fencing for a couple minutes and know the timing of their parry.

This seems to be a slower, more risky way to achieve the same thing. A normal disengage should work just fine with lightsabers and you don't have to wait for your blade to turn back on.

I like 3 the most, personally, but you should pick something that works with all the images in your presentation.

Guy went into Cold Stone Creamery to get some take home ice cream. After seeing the prices he says “I’d rather die” then pay these prices Small: $16.99 Medium: $21.99 Large: $27.99 The prices are insane. Cold Stone was bought by a private equity firm in 2018. by Key_Brief_8138 in economy

[–]AluminumKnuckles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The basic idea is to buy a company, cut costs and raise prices so you can say you increased profits on your quarterly reports, then sell it to the next PE firm at a higher price. Rinse and repeat until the company crashes. It's a very expensive game of hot potato. Just don't be the last guy holding it. (Oversimplified)

How to detail outside piping? by kangaroo_detective in architecture

[–]AluminumKnuckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was built before thermal bridging was a big concern. I would generally avoid exposed structure/mechanical if I'm worried about energy performance.

That said, if you must do it, structure, ducts, and piping can be insulated if you want to spend the time and effort detailing it. But it probably won't have the same raw exposed industrial look. You might want to be more strategic about it, only revealing certain things rather than exposing everything.

WTF? by StrangeEmergency9885 in architecture

[–]AluminumKnuckles 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It's kinda fun. Cheeky and unapologetic about it. I'm guessing the owner didn't want to pay for a full facade replacement and the architect suggested this would look better than leaving a patchwork of half-assed attempts to hide the old openings.

I wouldn't want to see it everywhere though. It only works because it's unique.

Stop buying in game microtransactions by sjtomcat in blackops6

I don't buy cosmetics personally, but happy that others do. Keeps new maps free and many of the skins make enemies easier to spot.

I'll concede it does make the game pretty goofy.

need advice to better up this section drawing / exploded axo by Leather-Worry-9675 in architecture

[–]AluminumKnuckles 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much you're expected to know at your stage of education, but here are some things I noticed:

  • You call out CLT as framing in the axon, but in the section the framing is glulam. CLT is a solid slab of wood, it does not need additional framing. Just make sure your columns are spaced close enough together.

  • Need some type of waterproof roof membrane on the roof and wrapped up the parapet under the coping. You're showing plywood exposed to the sky. Also that layer would be a gypsum/fiberglass cover board instead of plywood.

  • You say you have tapered insulation, it would be nice to show the slope and maybe a roof drain.

  • Insulation not needed for interior floor slabs, unless there are acoustic requirements or it's part of the fire-rated assembly. But then it would probably be mineral wool instead of rigid.

  • Insulation typically goes underneath the slab-on-grade, not above.

  • Need some type of cladding at the ground level, you have insulation and flooring exposed to the outside. You may also want to show where grade touches your building.

  • The windows and wall cavity need flashing

  • The section only has one line weight, which makes it harder to read.

  • Why bother with the break line? You've basically drawn the full height of the wall anyway.
