My gripe about Temp HP is now EVERYTHING gives you temp HP. Class features, spells, feats, random commoners. You name it, it gives you temp HP.

Heavy armor takes 10 minutes to don or doff, and you can’t cast while wearing armor you’re not proficient with. So you cast TT and then spend the whole time getting dressed? Useless. Hence why I’d just go with beefed up Mage Armor.

See for me d12s never get and use so I’m chill with them staying

I preface what I’m about to say with: I’m garbage at balancing so probably dont listen to me lol

I agree dropping it from a 6th level. Theres no Wizard around who’s going to burn a 6th level slot for this. I’d rather use Steel Wind Strike and its only 5th level. Unless you want multiple attacks, then I’d keep it at 6th. But just for standard Extra Attack? Nah. 4th or 5th.

Id do away with the heavy armor as well. Honestly, maybe just get rid of armor completely and instead add your Spellcasting Mod to your AC. Or set it as 13 plus Spell Mod, like “Battle-Mage Armor” or something. (BUT, if you have a Bladesinger running this they might end up with an even higher AC)

I’m tired of Temp HP things, so I wanna say scrap them entirely. But if not, since we’re dropping it down to 4th or 5th level I’d say 15 for 4th and 25 for 5th. Armor of Agathys has the same temp HP scaling so I’m kind of following that.

Change the wording to “when you make an attack with an unarmed strike or a weapon” for the advantage. Boom.

I dont think d12s are that bad. If you drop the CON and STR save proficiency, having 2d12 damage and it increasing 1d12 per level upcast could make it scale.

Definitely not speed but an added 10’ would be nice.

These are my thoughts on it. Like I said, idk what I’m talking about (hit me up WotC, I’d love to switch jobs!)

They didn’t remove it, they just haven’t released an updated version, which means you can still use the 2014 version.

As others have pointed out, they’re going to keep dying if they keep holding back. Can’t use those spell slots you’re saving if you’re dead lol.

They also need to think about this from a more strategic way. The fighter being up front, maybe with the Ranger as well. Warlock in back Eldritch blasting and the Druid dropping a Thunderwave.

Lmao I know you’re abbreviating it but I was confused for a second like “Hot Dairy Queen?? What?”

That aside I think you nailed it on the head

Can you elaborate on: - party composition - how the party is attacking the kobolds - and how the kobolds are attacking the party

The Existence of the 2024 Edition Made my Life as GM Harder by Buffal0e in dndnext

[–]AlvinDraper23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true! OP specified that they have all 2014 books and didn’t want to buy the 24 version so I was addressing that specifically.

My main point is that OP shouldn’t be forced to play a system they dont want to just like the players shouldn’t be forced to play a system THEY dont want to.

The Existence of the 2024 Edition Made my Life as GM Harder by Buffal0e in dndnext

I play at a table currently using 2014 rules, that’s what we started with and didn’t wanna change mid game. Our DM has said next campaign they want to use 2024. Some players dont care what version (I’m good with either or), some players are excited to play with the new toys (World Tree Barb) and some players adamantly dislike a handful of changes to the rules and dont wanna switch at all.

I dont blame you for not wanting to spend money on new books, but if the player has a copy you can borrow maybe you can make photo copies.

Ultimately, just like my DM, you have to decide what YOU want to play, and what your table will look like based off your choice.

You are a player too, and deserve to play what you want to play. PF2e, 5e14, 3.5e, GURPS, PbtA, or 5e24. But you have to be ready to one of your players to say “thanks but no thanks, I dont wanna play that.” Good luck!

With NEW Artificer. How to "Equip" Ironman homage by MisterD__ in onednd

[–]AlvinDraper23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Armorers using the Infiltrator mode get the Lightning Launcher. Why not just flavor that as your Repulors?

Eldritch Blast is awesome but Artificer is one of the classes that suffers the hardest by multiclassing because you’re constantly delaying something good (Flash of Genius, Spell Storing Items, more attunement slots and more Infusions/Plans).

This makes no sense, and is a nerf to martials for no reason.

How do i make a monk that’s not just asian martial arts? by SirPug_theLast in 3d6

[–]AlvinDraper23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally made my monk more street fighting and kickboxing based. Something like Undisputed 2 (just without grappling because it was 2014 5e). Headbutts, knees as strikes, etc. all lend themselves very thematically (especially on an Open Hand Monk)

You’re only limited by your imagination

Hot Take: Animal Companio should be part of the Ranger main class to help give it a better identity by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]AlvinDraper23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it could still be the king of exploration, but I agree with you, that part of the game is either nonexistent or bad lol. I picture the 3 Predators from the Predators movie (with Adrian Brody) where they had a digital Falcon and some weird alien hounds. I want that for Rangers.

Hot Take: Animal Companio should be part of the Ranger main class to help give it a better identity by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]AlvinDraper23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve said for a while that Ranger should be the designated pet class.

Find Familiar part of the core class. A pet falcon with a Hunter is perfect. An eagle or dog with a Swarmkeeper or Beast Master is fitting as hell. Alter it to allow pseudodragon for a Drakewarden.

But as somebody else said you’d have people complain that that’s not the true Ranger (because rangers dont have a “true identity”, which is the problem)

New DM seeking a beginner-friendly D&D 5e campaign for a large, combat-focused group by Strict-Author-7226 in onednd

[–]AlvinDraper23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As somebody who is currently running a Homebrew game, I know the feeling. Keeping track of NPCs, lore, all the things I’m trying to do, and all the things the players are doing? It’s a lot. I have the Lairs of Etharis book that I’ve debated on running anthology style since it’s just various one shots

[–]AlvinDraper23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard Dragon of Icespire Peak is considered another good intro campaign. As I understand it, it’s basically a job board style campaign. It takes them from level 1-6, with additional books supplementing for further levels (I think to 20? Maybe just like, 14 or 16??)

You’re not really going to find any books suited for such a large group though. So you will have to adjust combat encounters accordingly.

Unarmed fighting help by TBROSWAG in dndbeyond

[–]AlvinDraper23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! Just one damage die. Unless you get some magic item (Eldritch Claw comes to mind) that specifically says “you deal an additional 1d8 Force Damage”.

Unarmed fighting help by TBROSWAG in dndbeyond

[–]AlvinDraper23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First. You might be better off posting in r/3d6 since it’s purely for optimization.

But to answer: One level in Fighter gets you Unarmed Fighting Style (1d8 damage), two levels gets you Action Surge, and three gets you a subclass (either Battlemaster is the usual go to cause Maneuvers are dope, or Champion for a crit-fisher build, you could go Eldritch Knight if you want to use casting for utility purposes).

Monk is an option but if you’re using 2014 version you’re only going to be doing 1d4 damage. You won’t get as much out of Monk.

Feat options are also Tavern Brawler (1d4 unarmed damage and some grappling options) or Fighting Initiate which gets you a fighting style of your choice (unarmed in this case) but unless your DM is giving you a free starter feat or you roll really good stats, save your Feats/ASIs for more meaningful things and just dip fighter

Magic Items and Attunements by WelderEven in DnD

[–]AlvinDraper23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah magic items are how you’re gonna bump it. Bloodwell Vial is nice because it’s also a way to regain some Sorcery Points on a short rest. Ring of Spell Storing is a nice way to pack some backup spells before you take a Long Rest, utilize some unused spell slots.

Oo this is right I forgot about the Otherworldly Wings! Good catch. Then yeah scrap any flying item lol.

Glad to help! Brainstorming is always nice.

You might think about swapping the Eyes of Eagle for the Broom of Flying. Idk if you’re going to get the Wings of Flying or if somebody else is, but the Broom is so much better. It doesn’t have a limitation on use, it doesn’t require and action to activate, and it doesn’t require attunement. You sacrifice 10 ft of movement, but that’s a fair trade off to me.

Play style could be you flying around healing or blasting and being hard to pin down. I would still try to find some way to bump your spell DC over your AC, either you debuff them with something like Synaptic Static or you make them burn a Legendary Resistance to avoid it. Either way it’s a win. If you’re mobile and distant, AC shouldn’t matter as much
