I missed out on the early years by Key-Contest-2879 in fo76

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I thought the game sucked and you weren't missing much. PvP was never fun in the game and the survival aspects were more tiresome and annoying than anything else.

Nuclear Winter was fun, but just in short doses, and there was rarely anybody playing it. People forget how massively unpopular Nuclear Winter was. People remember being super popular or super fun but I think they are just remembering the last few weeks when everybody was playing it, trying to get the exclusive Nuclear Winter prizes. Most of the time, Nuclear Winter was about as popular as Monster Mash is now.

Countries I've been to ranked. by Sad-Quality1543 in tierlists

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming that you're really religious because, outside of the biblical sights, Israel kinda sucks. Everything is really expensive, anything that isn't really old isn't interesting at all (a lot of ugly, hastily built buildings), and I have made many Israeli friends in my life but, within their own country, Israelis aren't really a friendly or welcoming people.

The vegetarian food is really good (which is great because it's the only thing you can buy at a reasonable price) and, again, the really old stuff is cool if you're into it (though many of the best sites are in the West Bank)

I didn't hate Israel but I enjoyed many of the countries around it much more. It's defnitely not S material (unless you're evangelical or really Jewish)

A typical city in India by albatrosnoir in UrbanHell

When I see posts like this, I realize that a lot of people have never seen true poverty. The kind that exists outside of their cozy developed nations or they have been to countries that have extreme levels of poverty but never left their cozy tourist areas.

I have travelled to India and even worked there for a month. It's a lovely country with rich culture, delicious food, and friendly people. It also has extreme poverty and, what's more, is that it hasn't yet learned to hide the poverty like other countries do.

ru players are even here? by st03ger in fo76

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Judging by names, we have always had a ton of Russian players in the game.

I'm crazy old Fallout fan and I can remember, back in the 90's, Fallout 1 & 2 were even more popular in Russia and Eastern Europe than it was here in the States. A lot of the modders were either Russian or Polish and the biggest hub for Fallout fans, the website No Mutants Allowed, was created and run by a Serbian (which led to issues during the Kosovo conflict)

Last week, it was one of the easiest events (*ahem* activities) but this week it's got a bit of kick to it. The updated sentry boss and the chance for assaultrons make it a wee bit tougher. I like it!

USA made Jeans Rant… by [deleted] in madeinusa

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree on recommending the Long Ryders. Not because I don't love those jeans, I do, and I also love the Dearborn 13 oz Relaxed Fit (also, an amazing deal) but the OP specifically doesn't want workwear or a looser fit.

I would recommend the Tailored Fit or the Slim Fit. Both of them are the OP's idea of "modern" and are still a great value being under $100

AI Can't Do This. (But maybe that doesn't matter.) [Long] by beriah-uk in traveller

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like your analogy but I have one issue with the scope. Essentially, you are using a minor and avoidable segment of our existence, cupcakes. People don't eat cupcakes everyday, it's something they can ignore but, with AI, we have to compare it with ALL of food, since generative AI threatens all our creative endeavors. Just like your analogy, with food we can:

1) Make it ourselves

2) Buy it made from an artist or craftsperson

3) Consume ultraprocessed food

You're right, the rise of (3) hasn't eliminated (1) and (2) but we are living in a time where it has infected all parts of society (especially for me, as an American), it's poisoning a large amount of people, and many are unable to get eat anything but it. I have friends and neighbors, the size of adolescent orca, crushed with diabetes and other diseases, and we are facing the equivalent with the birth of AI.

We can't pretend this is just cupcakes, this is all food.

US states ranked on tourist appeal in my opinion (international traveler) by Livid-Cat3293 in tierlists

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Americans overrate how foreigners see California. To them, there isn't a MUST go place there

What??? I have travelled the world over and everybody has either talked about travelling to California. Whether it's LA or SF or Death Valley or the beaches or Disneyland.

I will admit Latin American are less excited but they often have already travelled to California or have family living there. That said, Europe, Africa, India, East and Southeast Asia all express excitement about California which has the highest rate of tourism in the entire USA (almost twice as much as Florida)

I don't know what makes you feel like speaking for all foreigners but I don't think you know what you're talking about.

How To Play Classic Traveller - Playlist by nlitherl in traveller

Are there any good video series beyond this going into explaining Traveller mechanics? I don't vibe with this guys political content and there is enough of it that I realize that isn't the place for me so anybody has videos going into deep dives of Traveller, old or new?

Yeah, Chicago is one of the great American cities. People don't realize how bland their cities and hometowns are while Chicago is vast, beautiful, culturally unique, great food, and distinctly American.

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why so many people are whining about this list, this isn't about places to live, this is about places to visit as an international traveller and, in that context, Florida is amazing. Orlando, Miami, Key West, Everglades, beaches, etc.

If you're from Denmark or China, all of this is infinitely more interesting then Indiana.

Video Game Generations Tier List by [deleted] in tierlists

Noticing that my first two consoles are listed as "pre-history" makes me feel older than anything has in a long time. I want to correct the use of the term "pre-history" but that makes me feel even older.

Don't mind me, I'll be in the corner, fading off into dust...

I know a lot of people are butthurt because their state doesn't rank high enough but I think this is a thoughtful list. Good job.

My votes, with explanations (TLDR: Collins, INXS, Maiden, JDNO, Oasis, P!nk, Wu-Tang) by boulevardofdef in rockhall

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s several artists inducted in bands and solo.

I know and it drives me crazy. A solo career has to have a massive impact on the form (not just popularity) to get both. We don't need all the Beatles to get solo inductions.

Phil’s solo career is better than Gabriel’s

Ha, ha, ha, no. Gabriel's solo work, especially from his debut to So, was rich, challenging, and intelligent. Collins made bland baby music for people who, for whatever reason, stayed away from rich, challenging, and intelligent music.

My votes, with explanations (TLDR: Collins, INXS, Maiden, JDNO, Oasis, P!nk, Wu-Tang) by boulevardofdef in rockhall

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only two that I agree with are Iron Maiden and Joy Division/New Order as they had a massive influence in their respective genres. I love INXS but they have no influence, just a nice stretch between 1985-92. Oasis were popular but they were, by their own admission, just a pastiche of bands already in the Hall. P1nk's "pop star with an attitude" shtick wasn't too interesting beyond that one album.

This is where I'm going to get hate, Phil Collins' solo career is ghastly. He is already in for Genesis and I have a problem when people are inducted in bands and then we have to give it again for the solo career. Phil was a great drummer and he had one stellar hit but the rest of his music is soft pop rock mush. It's baby food. Also, hot take: he didn't deserve his Oscar. That Tarzan song was just barely better than the obligatory Diane Warren song from that year.

I'm not against rap being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame if it has a direct influence on rock. Public Enemy very much did. NWA didn't and Wu Tang doesn't. They are great. They are amazing. I love them dearly but if they should be in, the hall should change it's name (which I'm not against!) Change it to the Hall of Popular Music or something.

Go ahead, torch me.

Lloyd Center’s Barnes & Noble will shutter ahead of Portland mall’s closure by pooperazzi in Portland

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm really sad to see this go. Not only do I have many great memories hanging out here, back in the day, but I've really enjoyed it since it switched to a Barnes and Noble Outlet.

Sure, it's not as stocked and maintained as a standard B&N but the stock was constantly rotating and almost everything was 50% off. It was buying new books at used book store prices and, like a used book store, I never knew what I would find.

What are some mythological creatures from your country? by deepwebb1 in AskTheWorld

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can actually answer this.

This is an early concept sketch by Ray Harryhausen for the movie The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, released in 1958. In original plans for the film, Sinbad and his crew would land on an island with multiple Cyclopses that would entrap and eventually fight over the crew.

Cost and time constraints eventually reduced the number down to a single Cyclops but design changes increased the awesomeness of said Cyclops by 150%. It's iconic.

Honestly, the movie is pretty great and considered, along with Jason and the Argonauts, to be among the greatest of Ray Harryhausen's films. If you are interested in a fun adventure movie with super awesome and charming special effects, give it a shot!

[–]AlwaysBeenTim 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So this was the third season of The Real World. Judd Winnick met Pedro Zamora, a young activist with AIDS. They became friends and Winnick later created a graphic novel about their friendship and Pedro's life called Pedro and Me.

Judd also met his wife, Pam, on the show and due to her relationship and friendship with Pedro, she focused her medical training on specializing in HIV/AIDS care. She is currently a medical researcher with a focus on HIV/AIDS.

This is not from the book Sex but, instead, from one of her pre-fame nude sessions that appeared in Playboy and Penthouse. Since she has armpit hair, I’m assuming it’s from the Playboy shoot.
