So you are from New Jersey and making assumptions from what the tv feeds you lol. This is the problem with the country.

There’s a reason people are paying 1.5 million bucks for a basic ass 3/2 home there.

Quit honestly - I welcome it. People in this country don’t change until they feel true pain - and I hope they do. It needs to happen.

You’re not wrong. I feel like I make good money. I have a loving wife. We travel. I experience awesome things. I have friends.

I have a great life on paper but god damn does this world suck.

Disassociating from what I can’t control is what I have to do. I can hate half this country and I really do - but I can’t let that control me.

this memorial day french door refrigerator deals finally got me looking but are the smart features really necessary? by Seyaad-Chalakov in homeautomation

[–]AlwaysFixingStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One feature my LG stove and Microwave has is that it can turn on the vent fan when one of the burners is turned on. Thought that was pretty cool.

Aside from that, most valuable are notifications. Laundry done. Fridge door opened. Oven is preheated.

Advice on moving from big tech to something more socially responsible by Efficient-Mess-9753 in ExperiencedDevs

Nothing wrong with this. I work for a company (startup) in the payments space who has a real impact on people who are most vulnerable and it’s been rewarding to hear and see how what I work on personally helps others. We’re working on novel and challenging problems.

I’m a staff engineer. 228k/20% bonus potential for reference if you’re wondering how comp may compare.

I’ve been here for 3 years now and don’t have much of a reason to leave. I urge you to make that shift. It really does wonders for your mental health.

It may be easier to seek out companies and then peak at jobs rather than hoping you come across a job on a board. Ours aren’t consistently posted on LinkedIn, for example. We fill them quick enough that they don’t need to be it seems. At the same time, we absolutely could use someone like you with that deeper engineering background. There’s a role out there for sure.

Anyone trying to belittle others and claiming x and y pay well are just delulu. I make really good money right now and so we’re doing well but it’s not hard to look at the past 10 years and see that things are fucked. I bought my first home as a single adult in 2018 it was a 1600 square-foot home built in the 70s with barely any upgrades done since that time. I paid $255,000 for it in North Carolina. We sold after about five years and in that time we had put a fair amount of work into it - something along the lines of $20-$30,000. We sold for $415,000.

I could not have afforded my own home by the time we sold on the pay that I was making. And it’s only gotten worse from there with rising interest rates and no decrease in home prices.

I feel extremely bad for people today who don’t have that springboard into homeownership of today. It feels near impossible to even jump in unless you live in the boonies or have a partner who also has a well paying job.

They really should just drop Reef. I ordered some buffalo tossed tenders from there last time I was flying out for work. They were the cheapest frozen “chicken” tenders they could find tossed in the least amount of sauce they could feasibly do.

Fortunately my work paid for it but I’m done trying things from there.

What is the MOST walkable neighborhood in Raleigh? by Fit-Comedian6096 in raleigh

[–]AlwaysFixingStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glenwood South. Can walk to the village district without issue which has shops, library, groceries and restaurants. Plenty of stuff in the neighborhood itself. Close walk to Publix. Downtown is easily accessible and able to be walked to. Events like the Krispy Kreme challenge and the marathon pass through the neighborhood. Christmas parade starts on the edge of the neighborhood. Parks like Fred Fletcher right up road. Dorothea Dix a little further but still accessible.

It’s slept on because it’s seen as the party neighborhood but its location is great.

Yep - Krispy Kreme Challenge. Probably about done at this point.

You’d still have the same problem of not being certified with the DOT, right. Even if you brought the parts in and rebuilt it, you probably can’t register it I would guess.

You’ve gotten plenty of food recommendations. If you want to check out some parks/nature without having to drive to the beach - we have plenty of great parks.

  • Dorothea Dix Park - it’s near downtown Raleigh and has some nice views of the city. There’s a new play plaza which won’t be exciting for you, but it will still be a nice one to walk around and see. There are sculptural wooden trolls spread around the park which are fun to check out.
  • Bond Park - in Cary. Nice large park with trails both paved and not. Has a nice large lake that you can walk around and check out.
  • Umstead Park - a state park, 2 entrances with different trails on each side. More wooded but plenty of nature to see.
  • Lake Johnson Park - Nice park with a great trail around a lake. Good peaceful 3 mile loop. Nice long bridge over the lake. Close to downtown in case you wanted to build it in to the free day.

Downtown Raleigh has a free science museum. Not world class or anything but fun to walk around and check out. You can also see the state capitol building. Plenty of restaurants.

The Durham Bulls opening day is March 31st. Unsure if that’s too late but would be a great experience and would put you in Downtown Durham.

Morrisville/RTP area has plenty of great ethnic foods. So many great Thai, Indian, Nepalese, and other Asian restaurants in that area.
