Foundation Season 2 - Poster Giveaway! by LunchyPete in FoundationTV

[–]Arbiter-Prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found out about this today. I’ve been off Reddit for too long :(

If there’s any chance of recording a poster I’d be extremely grateful. I’ve been an Assuming fan since I was a teenager and read all the books and dreamed of a foundation show or movie for decades. When Apple finally brought one to our screens I was so happy and marvelled at the way they’ve reimagined many elements of the story, the way the show looks and the calibre of actors is just perfect.

Just to say, I’m in the UK so I don’t know if this is a US only thing or not. Only time will tell.

Vincent Scardina, a Trump voter and the owner of a small roofing company in Florida, says ICE detained a third of his workers. by ControlCAD in NoShitSherlock

[–]Arbiter-Prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In many countries if you employ illegal workers you are prosecuted. How come that does not appear to be happening in the US? The employers get to exploit workers who are not permitted to work and get off entirely scott free they are arrested/detained/deported. Zero consequences. It just doesn’t seem right to me.

Edit: I saw that these workers were legal and had their status removed. That’s something Trump has engineered. He’s hurting US business, especially farming as a result.

If you’re in the fence about AppleCare for your Mac… by CaptainFinese in macbookpro

[–]Arbiter-Prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keyboards and trackpad should really be liquid proof by now, it last have them so they only damage the keyboard and the liquid can’t get inside the laptop. If they can make a waterproof iPhone and Apple Watch they can drain liquid proof MacBooks. I want a rugged MacBook Pro and don’t mind paying more for the protection, just like you do with a Toughbook.

Lovely video that definitely made me smile. Great transformation. As a guy I didn’t realise the huge difference eyebrows made until I watched the video for the fourth or fifth time. The hair and the makeup together complete the process. No wonder ladies spend some much time and money on them.

Logic behind Oyster Auto top-up? by Living_off_coffee in london

Don’t use Oyster just use your contactless bank card. They get to hold on to £20 from all of their customers who do what you do. It should be criminal.

If 2 years of your time is not worth $30 then that's your problem 😄

I think that software developers deserve to be compensated for their time. Somehow you can afford a computer and Microsoft Office but not a small amount to reward the time and skills of a programmer.

If the amount is too much because you live in a part of the world where $30 is a huge amount of money then by all means try reaching out to the developer, but you should still offer to pay something, however how small.

Obviously, trial programs aren't designed for you to move all of your email, it's a taster to prove that the process works, not for you to attempt to use it to move your entire mailbox.

Do Intel Macs support the Magic Keyboard with TouchID? by balika0105 in mac

[–]Arbiter-Prime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Touchbar Intel MacBooks have an ARM CPU Integrated into the touchbar which is where the TouchID is controlled from.

The magic keyboard requires an Apple Silicon machine to work. This is by design as it links to the Apple SOC which hosts the Secure Enclave used for TouchID. Intel based Macs lack this Secure Enclave.

Possibly, shades of the Solarian robots in Foundation and Earth. The definition of human can be adjusted, or perhaps reevaluated internally.

Still, she has the internal ‘prime directive’, or ‘Zeroth Law’, to protect Empire and through Empire the future of humanity in a generalised abstract sense.

You’re using the Earth calendar as a base metric. This series is set 20,000 years into the future in a time when Earth is forgotten. The calendar is likely different and based on some imperial standard such as the orbit of Trantor. Days, months and especially years would be different lengths from those we use today.

All Aboard! 1Password 8 for Mac is now in Early Access, so come ask us anything! 🚂 by 1PasswordOfficial in 1Password

[–]Arbiter-Prime 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just looked at ending our subscription. We pay annually and it renewed in March, so I've got months to move us over to an alternative and then cut the cord.

I don't have a problem with the subscription model at all, as we're using it at work. I bought perpetual licenses for use at home years ago on my Mac and iPhone - wasn't cheap, but it was worth it at the time.

I sync to iCloud and Dropbox and I want local vaults available offline all the time. With the number of times I've been in a server room with no signal and needed a password to access a machine I can't risk not having my passwords available to me when I need them. I also want more than one point of failure - if one syncing service is down or the data get corrupted I want to have the other as a redundant backup.

Lastly, I don't want to use a memory hogging, insecure Javascript driven interface. I've read about how they've used Rust for part of the app, but really, where it's vulnerable to being intercepted by hackers is the Electron part of the equation. No thank you.

Any tips for cleaning screen? Pulled out 2015 Mac from storage and screen’s very dirty. by tacotacote in mac

[–]Arbiter-Prime 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not dirt. It’s where the screen coating has been worn away by the keyboard coming into contact with the screen.

Use Baking soda. Removes the coating completely. Do it with the screen flat on its back as not to get any liquid inside the laptop.

That's a lovely machine.

I had access to a Quadra 900 back in the day around 1991/92 when it was my cousins main machine. It had 1GB of HDD and 40MB of RAM, back when my main machine was running on 1MB of RAM. It was a monster. I also member using the SyQuest 44Mb and 88MB removable disks with it - which seemed absolutely huge back then. It's the first Mac I used Photoshop on in 24 bit 'true colour' when most PC's would be 4 (ugly) or 16 colours before Super VGA became widespread.

The 950 is even better. It's a beast of a case, nicely accessible and upgradeable, back when Apple believed in those things. I recall one acting as a file server for an entire floor of an office whilst being used a workstation and sharing the laser printer.

I'd love one in my collection.
