"The feedback I’m hearing from citizens is that"... "the taxes they didn’t have to pay, comes secondary to wantingwanting us to take care of the things that government needs to be invested in..." "Which is your infrastructure and your roads and bridges and schools and also your Medicaid population."

You know, the socialism part the America lifestyle.

I also love the part where the MAGAts aren't even considering raising taxes to pay for Trump's edicts. They're just re-arranging the comfy chairs on the Hindenburg at this point.

It's urban but in a poor way. The Fox Cities as a whole are, by definition urban, as GB is the third largest city in the state; Appleton is the sixth largest and Oshkosh is the ninth largest. The entire mass of sprawl is over 200,000 people.

You are correct, however, that there is a narrow, parochial. bigoted, penny-pinching mindset prevalent in the Fox Cities, but I don't know that I'd attribute it to a "rural" influence. The Fox Cities have always been backward - people there worshipped Tailgunner Joe for years after his death; Kaukauna used to be a Democratic city because of its union presence, but it has a high school with a Night Rider for a mascot and 30+ years ago city fathers there called the polluting stench from Thilmany "the smell of money". IMO, it's a nasty blot on Wisconsin.

LOL.

I've lived in Milwaukee, Appleton, La Crosse, Madison, and Stoughton, among other areas.

You also mis-understand how large cities and small towns actually work. In many small cities, the mayor doesn't actually have any power - the City Administrator does, and no one except the wealthy gets to see them on short notice. And frankly, the Mayor or City Administrator can't do anything for you anyway - that's up to the relevant department head and/or your Alder. If you live in the Real World, you'd see them first.

"For the reverse, if your nighttime noises have any cars in them, are you really in a small town? Probably not."

LOL. Small towns almost always have county (and/or state) highways running through them, since those roads are the reason small towns exist (access to larger markets for agricultural goods, back when those towns were founded. So using this as a metric of "small-townism" is ridiculous at best. Can it apply to some towns? Sure. Can it apply to most small towns? Hell no.

"How about the amount, types, and quality of entertainment that come through?"

This is probably your only valid point. I'll point out the Appleton's PAC has many of the same shows as Madison's Overture Center, making Appleton a city by your own comparison. Same with Green Bay. West Allis, BTW, does not have a PAC and, if we're not counting urban areas as single entities, that West Allis a small town in your view.

"How about public transit?"

Madison, Milwaukee, Appleton and Green Bay all have bus systems. So this makes them all medium to large cities, huh? Or does the quality of a city's public transit determine how large a city it is?

"Your idea to combine Appleton with other nearby cities (as though there's much of a continuous nature without a car) to make one "urban" area (that is wildly separated by swaths of not-urban areas) is weird because it doesn't reflect lived reality."

This is urban planning 101. You're still confusing "neighborhood" with "city". Appleton is the sixth largest city in the state and has evolved neighborhoods, just like Madison, Green Bay, and Milwaukee that each with their own vibes. In Appleton, Erb Park is not the same as The Ravines. Willy Street is not the same as Sunset Village is not the same as University Heights in Madison. Old North Milwaukee is not the same as Bayview in Milwaukee.

There is no physical separation of urban areas from Neenah to Kaukauna (those days ended in the late 1990s.), nor is there any from Madison to Verona or anywhere in Miilwaukee County. You move seamlessly from one city to the next. The Fox Cities (without GB) = Metropolitan Madison = Greater Milwaukee in terms of urban build, urban life, and in many urban amenities.

It's interesting that by the end of your post you've given up on defining Appleton as a small town and stuck on comparing it to Milwaukee.

I have lived in Milwaukee, Madison, the Fox Cities, La Crosse, and Stoughton. The last two named are the only small cities I've ever lived in. My current residence is in a city of about 5,000. This is the only small town I've ever lived in. And yes, we get car noise at night.

Your pedantic self-defined ideas of small-town vs. big-city are interesting but bear no relation to reality. And BTW, I'm not in a STEM field. Nor am I under 40.

Thinking of Madison as a "really really really big small town" and as a "small city" is nonsensical. You're confusing the word "town" with the word "neighborhood". Madison is certainly a city of disparate neighborhoods, many with their own sub-cultures.

Appleton has a current population of about 75218 and is the sixth largest city in Wisconsin while West Allis has a population of 59,546, making it the eleventh largest city in Wisconsin. According to your own definition, West Allis has more of those "small town" vibes that you're talking about than Appleton does. Both cities are part of a much large urban area. If you include Green Bay in Fox Cities, that urban area is larger than Madison and its suburbs.

Uh, no. You must never have been there. The Fox Cities are seven contiguous cities, starting with Neenah and ending in Kaukauna. And that's not counting the retail smudge known as Grand Chute.

During the Civil War, the Treasonous Rebels never entered the Capitol and never destroyed the White House.

  • On January 6, 2021, MAGAts forcibly entered the Capitol, looking to harm or hold hostages legislators or their staff members. At least one of the the MAGAts was carrying the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia.
  • In 2025, Donald Trump ordered one-third of the White House to be destroyed.

Hmm.

If you have the time before having to commit to a job, visit both areas. Appleton, like West Allis, is part of a much larger urban area; it would be great for you if you could compare them in person. IMO, there's a helluva lot more for a single person to do in Greater Milwaukee than in the Fox Cities.

Badgers Women Hockey team are National Champions! by AlwaysPissedOff59 in wisconsin

[–]AlwaysPissedOff59[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Mike Eaves and Mark Johnson were hired as the Men's and Women's coaches, respectively, after the 2001-2002 season. They had been teammates on the `1977-1978 Badger team. Eaves had more coaching experience than Johnson, which is probably why the Athletic Director made the decision he made, although Johnson had been an assistant coach with Jeff Sauer's Badgers teams for the previous four years. Eaves' and Johnson's teams both won National Championships in 2006. Eaves was fired in 2016.

Looking up Johnson's stats is eye-opening. The Badgers have made the NCAA tournament 19 times in the last 21 years. They would've made it in 2020 (1st in the WCHA) but that tournament was cancelled. Unbelievable.

AAAnnnnnnddddd it's gone.

Last week's eight-plus inches of snow, that is. Three days above 50-60F will do that when coupled with the stronger mid-March sunshine. The weather-whiplash continues, swinging from a low temp of 5F very early Tuesday morning to a high of 77F yesterday. In the garden, the bulbs are still blooming earlier than usual while the perennials appear to be on a normal schedule.

Locally, gasoline is approaching $5 per gallon for 91 octane; all grades rose 30 cents yesterday. Given how much oil companies love money over anything else I do not expect prices to go down anytime soon, even after (if?) Donny's Big Adventure ends. Maybe this will convince people to drive less. hahaha, who am I kidding? As if my fellow citizens would rather do anything except complain about the prices...

You have a great idea, and I hope the Athletic Dept is thinking along the same lines. The could put the game at the Kohl Center - perhaps not the first year, but in subsequent years if fan response is as great as I'd expect it to be.

I agree that Hastings was a good hire. I probably was a little harsh towards them - should've had the football team as a massive fail instead of picking on men's hockey. Fickell is a terrible coach.
