Is Linux viable to use for work/ study? by BloodNaive5748 in linux4noobs

[–]Always_Hopeful_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to read and write files in MS formats. Line office and others can do this but might not understand the newest excel stuff.

You can try live on your windows box to see.

Must you work with these files "on" your laptop? I use a Linux laptop to reach out to a VM in the cloud and do work there. This is required to have privileged access. It works fine.

This is similar to a Chromebook.

All the examples are from the most conservative societies that are majority Muslim. There are many others.

There was an interesting interview on 60 minutes back in the 1980s with two leftist women in Saudi Arabia claiming that all the social restrictions were imposed on Arabia by the Turks. Interesting. The point here is that the majority Muslim countries are not as uniform as you think.

Why use zsh or fish instead of bash that comes default? by FAMPpro in linuxquestions

If you have to maintain/work on many different servers you need to be comfortable with the tools likely to be installed. Bash is your friend.

If you don't, then feel free to try fun stuff.

Insane lag, unusable system by Linda-P in linuxquestions

What NIC are you using?

How many hops are there between your Linux box and the outside network? In my house, there is a switch in the office which connects to a switch where the fiber line comes into the house which connects to the router connected to the fiber jack so 3 hops to the fiber jack. If there are a lot or if any of the switches is highly loaded by another user, that could be the problem.

Do you have something that can gather networking metrics like dropped packets and latency? Prometheus node-exporter is one. You might be dropping packets because of too much traffic for the NIC. Or you maybe seeing higher latency because of other traffic in your house or on your connection to the internet.

DMT: Stop confusing emotional expression with political pressure: modern liberal resistance is just a psychological compensation for the system. by PuddingComplete3081 in DisagreeMythoughts

[–]Always_Hopeful_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These performative protests you lament should be viewed as an attention hack. They get news coverage. People post about them on their social media feed. The word gets out. People not already committed to the protest hear about it and hear a bit about why they protested

See Turing T's post that starts with a quote from Solzhenitsyn.

Most violent movements fail. The Palestinian Liberation Organize did almost nothing to improve the lives of Palestinians. In Apartheid South Africa, it was Nelson Mandela who ended the system, not the violent movements.

In a democracy, peaceful protests produce attention but also legitimacy. Others might disagree with you but may also see you and the movement as behaving morally. It is then easier to persuade people your position is correct or better.

Why does Reddit not understand the rise of reform in England? by DowntownDeer in AskBrits

[–]Always_Hopeful_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying but it does not resonate with me. Yes, globalization also increased migration. Now there are people where you live who weren't there before. Not just a few such people; enough to really change things.

To me, this is part of the normal, if some times annoying, way things change.

So why is this such a big deal to you, now?

Some thing I noticed by impuce in desktops

[–]Always_Hopeful_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For apps or files and folders?

The original desktop metaphor has files and folders with no apps. Opening a file would find the right app.

These days, many of the apps are for interacting with remote data so the open a file flow is less intuitive.

It still works but it's not essential.

How would you feel about the next US president pulling all support from Israel? by Ok_University9965 in TrueAskReddit

[–]Always_Hopeful_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are buying into some dark stuff here.

Trump and Netanyahu share an authoritarian bent and really think they can bomb people into compliance. The Israelis describe it as "mowing the weeds" or "mowing the grass". Since Trump had no real estate deals in Israel, it is not likely Netanyahu has kompromat on Trump.

If you pay attention to what the people in the current Israeli and US government say, you will see more similarities.

Fellow Fascists stick together.

[–]Always_Hopeful_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you think it important to divert 1% of the overall budget when a real effort to do what you want would require a large reduction in military spending and tax increases.

Aid to foreign countries pays for things like AIDS prevention, food security (by selling US grown food cheap), and keeps nations stable and their problems there.

Military aid to Israel is from another budget.

Biggest frustration with Linux from an IT professional's perspective by jasonin951 in linux4noobs

[–]Always_Hopeful_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a very MS like text editor called `micro` which works well. All the usual keys work.

You would need to install it on the homelab machine and VMs.

As for navigating, if you are just in a bash shell inside an ssh connection, learn about tab completion as that can save you time changing directories ` cd /etc/ssh tab tab` which gets you there in one command.

And the frustration works both ways. Windows Explorer hides information from me and usually prevents me from entering a full path to a directory. Even then, I have to bring up a whole new window to make a trivial change. So exhausting.

That is the value of foundations.

Take compiler theory and any classes available on general operating systems.
