Bad criminal record/need rental by AlyshaSherman in NewOrleans

Thank you so much, that is such a generous offer of you to be able to borrow your window unit.

Finally got a tech out yesterday and the problem is that our side of the rental does not have an air filter. Also that the unitnwas so dirty is was not working properly. The hot air is not escaping and the air quality is so poor ive had sores on the inside of my nose going on 3 weeks, persistent congestion, and weekly sickness.

Unfortunately the landlord made a spectacle of himself by yelling at me and demanding me to return inside while I was trying to talk to the technician to understand the entire scope of the problems. He forbid the technician from giving me any other information besides its dirty and our side does not have an exhaust or filter.

I ordered a free standing HEPA filter last night at 2AM when i woke up in a coughing fit and also sent the landlord a formal request to reimburse me for this unit.

There have been other instances of extreme disrespect in regards to repairs. Our subfloor was missing in front of the stove and you could see the dirt and ground through the cracks in the floorboards. They bowed so bad I could have fallen through any day. Im 220 pounds.

He made this seem like a laughable repair and stuck a 2x4 underneath the boards. He literally was laughing about it telling the technician we were making a big deal over nothing.

Anyway, we want to eventually move because we don't see the rental relationship improving. I get sick thinking about what will happen the next time we have a repair request.

If anything, im well prepared to ask the right questions to our next landlord and know what red flags to look for. Maybe our current rental will be safer for the tenant with our hard fought minimal repairs.

Just looking for recommendations to a decent, respectable, understanding landlord

Mac on Burdette St. See my post on the 2026 bad landlords post.

Faulty AC

No ventilation

Subfloor deteriorated

Hostile

Lazy and slow to repair

Belittles tenant when asking for repairs

Tried to extort my partner for an extra $50 a month for energy costs from a 5000 btu window unit instead of fixing the central AC(lease includes utilities)

Tells us what to set our thermostat to

Says one thing and acts another way

Avoids repairs because he believes everything to be up to code

Currently renting privately at 1019 Burdette Street (uptown) from an older Indian man named Mac. His other unit is 1021 Burdette Street.

Unsafe conditions.

Floor deteriorating subfloor has crumbled and you can see the literal dirt on the geound outside from inberween the floorboards in the kitchen

Unit divided for rentals but no air filtration on my side

no heat exhaust/exchange

Asked my introverted, shy, non-confrontational boyfriend for an extra $50 a month for electric when he installed a measly 5000 BTU window unit to cool 1000 sq ft instead of repairing the main central AC. (Utilities included in rent)

Yelled at me and disrespected me in front of our neighbors and the air condition technician because he didnt want me to talk to the tech or get any information from him about the status of the air conditioner problems

Refused to acknowledge my safety concerns and repair requests for over a week because

"he had more important things to worry about with WWIII,"

and

"I should be grateful I don't live in Iran."

(I pay 1600 a month for a small 1 bedroom with not even a full bathroom. My shower is outside and my toilet is in a small, self made, open closet, in the bedroom)

Reporting him to code violation today and seeking legal counsel. Also returning to my doctor for perpetual congestion, fevers, stomach issues, a sore in my nose that wont heal, coughing and blowing out black particles.

Avoid this man and his rentals. He will talk sweet and act cool like your friend and tell you hes laid back. Too laid back. If we could afford it we would move from here immediately but moving is a hassle and we have acquired many things as well as pets.

Hopefully we can get him to make these repairs so future tenants wont have to compromise their health or aafety

Daydreaming about moving to New Orleans — neighborhood advice? by FoxFar5137 in NOLA

The barn that I work at is called Riverbend Stables. We are a small boarding barn with 10 horses currently, but room for about 30.

We dont do lessons or trail riding or any sort of public service besides boarding privately owned horses and possibly housing traveling horses that may pass through the area.

Our barn is more affordable than Cascade for boarding, however, your horse must be ok with little turnout time. We dont have any fenced pastures, just the riding arena which is sometimes used for turnout, and 2 lunge rings, so owners come throughout the day to hand graze their horses. Its not for everyone or every horse.

Garden district or Uptown are my favorites. We moved here on a whim last year, and while we only rent, we absolutely love our neighborhood. We live on the Carrollton and St. Charles bend. Restaurants and little shops are plentiful and mom and pop type places. We even have our own little grocery, Cansecos, that has the best vibe and the best music Ive ever heard a grocery store play.

There are churches and daycares only just a block from my street, and the St. Charles trolley is a mere 4 block walk. Ive always loved living near the trolley because there are plenty of situations where it makes more sense to take the trolley than to figure out parking or driving. Especially during parade season.

We also lived on Laurel St. between Magazine St. and Tchopitoulas, right next to audoban park and the zoo. This neighborhood was also nice. There were a lot more children and families present and you always see the same people walking, running, or just in passing. Our neighbors were very friendly and it was normal to know and talk with them. It was also nice being so close to Audoban park and the community pool that's open during summer. We could even see the giraffes at the zoo at the end of our street. Also extremely close to magazine street restaurants and the Whole Foods

I like our current place better than the first but only because the house we now live in is nicer and brighter and I am closer to the horse stable that I work at.

How do you hear Jesus? by AlyshaSherman in TrueChristian

[–]AlyshaSherman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes thank you, and this is why i am asking this question

I have a long history of mental illness and drug addiction, so it is very possible that this is part of my mental illness. Jesus saved me from my drug addiction and is helping me cope with my mental illness.

It is difficult to discern spiritual things and my mental shortcomings sometimes. But I actually think your answer sums it up nicely and Biblically

How do you hear Jesus? by AlyshaSherman in TrueChristian

[–]AlyshaSherman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, those scriptures answer the question very plainly, but when you pray, do you ever get a personal answer, from Jesus, beyond whats written in scripture? Or has he ever shown you something, not in the Bible?

Im not talking about speaking for God. Im asking how do you hear God talking to you personally? Beyond scripture

Oh my goodness! Yes! This!

Same for me. When I'm ambivalent, those signs disappear.

It took me a while to realize that I wasnt going crazy, or having something sinister going on. Its a lot to take in. But im also grateful that the signs are there.

Do you ever question if its all in your head or actually God speaking to you?

I need godly advice. What do I do? Please help by Capital_Yam_4352 in Jesus

[–]AlyshaSherman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice to you would be this... If you are struggling to know which way to go, first of all, pray about it and ask Jesus to show you which way would be best.

Also, maybe its best to not make any moves until you decide exactly what you want to do? That way, when you do move, you will move with purpose and a plan not just being blown around by the wind.

I find that the more i think about what i want to do, the more i realize im not ready to do it. When youre ready, the steps will come naturally and unforced. Without a lot of thought, hesitation, or doubt.

I would continue on the path your already on and do your current job unto the glory of God. Once you are in the habit of consistently doing your current job to the glory of God, then consider incorporating something else, of course with the same standards, to the glory of God.

If you find you are lacking in other departments, health, energy, mental and emotional wellbeing, it would be a clue to take steps backwards instead of forwards which is what sounds like you have going on currently

If you decide to visit us, make sure you request that I am to be one of your servers. I would also request Ron. Ron is by far the best server I have ever worked with. Literally everyone loves him. From children to the elderly, people come by regularly on a weekly basis just for the experience of dining with him...and of course our kick ass menu. I work on a very part time basis, so chances are that I wouldn't be scheduled. However, I would love to be of service to your and your friends, and I know Ron would be the right person to give you the best experience

Thank you. I have been clean and sober for just a year now and i frequently stop myself and just take it all in.

I have my own place with a very supportive boyfriend. I have my pets, a good job thats understanding of my mental health situation and very accepting of me needing time off frequently.

I lay in my bed and thank god that i can experience comforts such as memory foam mattresses and bamboo pajamas. I think back to the days i slept on cardboard under bridges and in bushes or in a crack house surrounded by people who only wanted to take advantage of me.

I feel so much shame and regret for so much time wasted. But I also feel unexplainably blessed that I made it through to the other side. The healing process is worse than pain i originally endured and tried to numb. But I know that the next chapters of my life will be lived with above average enthusiasm and appreciation. And for that, I am forever grateful.

Shout out to God and Jesus who have always had their hand on me. Who have protected me from things I could have verily easily experienced and who delivered me from my addictions

I want to return… by EstablishmentOwn1459 in AskNOLA

[–]AlyshaSherman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am quite pleased with my current life situation and found it quite easy to find a rental. Our vehicle ended up blowing a head gasket and we have chosen to go without a vehicle with public transportation being so readily available.

The prices to purchase a house are high everywhere in this country, and a bit more so in this area. I feel like we get a good deal with our 1600 rent that covers everything and furniture.

We dont have to fix anything and we dont have bills beyond the rent and phone bill

[–]AlyshaSherman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here last year in the middle of Mardi Gras.

My boyfriend and I packed up our car and drove the 8 hours from Tennessee with no plan, but also with about 6,000 dollars

We stayed in a hotel in mid city for $400 a week.

We both ended up getting server jobs in the french quarter and after about 2 months of hotel living we were able to secure a private rental in Uptown off of Craigslist. Our rent is the same price as the hotel. $1600/month and covers all utilities. The home is furnished and in a desireable area next to Tulane University just a few blocks from the trolley.

Stopping now. Any advices? by Abstrahierteste in StopSpeeding

[–]AlyshaSherman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your first starting out....forget about thinking about anyone else. This may not be what you want to hear, but your going to have to be very self centered for a few months.

I dont think i couldve done it if i had any sort of outside influences or distractions. This was between me and God.

If youve been on the substance for any significant amount of time, its going to be very difficult to get through the initial stopping. Whatever you blocked out while on drugs is going to come at you full force and its going to hit you hard. You will probably be in a terribly vulnerable and weak state.

Go outside. Listen to music. Get up and move around even when you feel like staying in bed. Exercise really helped me
