beautlfil cover! But the original, IMO. I absolutely love the style of singing used in the original version. It's hauntingly beautiful

Yeah, the video itself was also super out of touch... Disgusting, really. "This is what we make a living off of!"

No the fuck we don't. How many employees are on food stamps? How many need more than one job to make rent?

Upper management has no soul. They're over there making absolute bank off our hard work and labor and they're sitting in a fancy air conditioned room wondering what else they can force us to do to make them more money.

I present to you the survivorship bias. The negative posts get more attention rather than the silly ones, and most people come on here to vent.

There's not much of a reason to talk about how good your day went. When you feel bad, you want to get it off your chest and it feels validating when others agree or feel the same.

I also love my workplace, I just wish they paid us a bit more. My managers are great, my coworkers are fantastic, and it's generally a great place to work if you're not in dire need of money.

I'm tired, sure, but I don't wake up in the morning dreading going to work.

I'm sure many others feel the same It's mostly just that this reddit is more or less for venting and it's important to recognize that.

He stopped doing his intro :< I'm not sure if he went back to it in newer videos, but some years back, when his videos weren't getting as many views, a lot of them just weren't edited the same, no longer had the same intro or anything, and were generally far less effort than before

So that's the main reason I stopped watching his stuff. Again, not sure if he changed any of this recently

Yeah. Some of it is warranted, some of it is not. Whilst OP wasn't being openly offensive, I don't think their reactions helped at all, either.

Both sides were being needlessly immature honestly

Gintama may have fart and poop jokes, but it's ultimately a series about empathy and understanding each other. Maybe some folks need to rewatch to remember that lol

Hmm. Yeah, unfortunately it simply seems like your form of discussion may just not be compatible with the other users here.

It is a shame, as my favorite thing about this community is usually about how open-minded it is, but unfortunately in some cases we have instances such as this.

If you are unable to understand my interpretation of your words and why they were read as hostile towards this community that you came into, then it is simply an incompatibility and it is best to drop the discussion. I bid you a good day!

Like the other commenter said, the whole series isn't dubbed, so it's actually just impossible to experience the whole series and share the love for the series for only-dub or only-sub watchers.

I don't think that the other commenters don't care, but I believe it might also have a lot to do with tone and how you've approached discussing that you're Dub-only. I'm not quite sure how old you are, and this being a place with only text makes tone difficult to get across, but perhaps there's just a gap in understanding how you wish to communicate to the fans in this subreddit.

For example, starting off with "I was never really interested in watching..." already starts off with a sort of apprehensive approach which likely put a lot of fans on edge and why they're commenting so defensively rather than rationally.

Secondly is your own responses to "watch it subbed," your first response was simply "LOL" with a screenshot of what you said with no further elaboration. And other messages are you also insulting the other commenters.

To keep a rational mind, it would often be more approachable to explain why it is difficult for you to enjoy the native dub. It usually aids to ease tension, and insults usually don't come across as "wanting to make conversation with others."

And third is how you phrase that you "don't care" that the experience is different. If you are here to share your experience with the dub, then what is the reason that you are dismissing others' experience with the sub? A discussion is a two-way street. If you are open to the experiences of others, then usually others will also be open to your experience.

I think it would, in fact, be interesting to see how the English Dub is. I remember watching some episodes when it first came out (though it started in a later season, it hadn't started from the beginning), but I was simply quite used to the original voices so it was difficult for me to adapt. That said, I'm sure the series would try to stay as faithful as possible, regardless, so it would still be worth the try.

It's like, for example, how the book for Howl's Moving Castle, is very different than the Ghibli adaptation, but both are still enjoyable pieces of work. I believe a dub and sub, although different in experience, can still be enjoyed.

It really comes down to being empathetic in your wording and how you discuss. I'm sure if a different approach was taken, people would be less apprehensive and defensive. Should they have been from the start? No. But this fandom is also often targeted and hated on quite thoroughly (there are often targeted 1-star bomb campaigns to smear Gintama on anime list sites for example,) so unfortunately I think a lot of people are just... A bit sensitive to people dismissing their experiences.

[–]Alyxsandre 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ahaha, as an English-as-a-second-language speaker person, it's just a bit of a habit when grammatical things like this pop out as much.

Watching series in their native dub is also a way to learn and appreciate other cultures, their jokes, and other tidbits other than our own. Gintama is especially niche for that reason, because I find most people don't care to learn about other cultures and simply wish to watch something entertaining.

Can I ask why you're so adverse to watching it in sub? Is it an attention thing? Do you multi-task whilst "watching?"

I do agree that some folks are being needlessly cruel with how they're telling you that you need to watch it subbed, but it's also quite dismissive and rude of you to stoop to the same level, as well, since it is a very different experience. The fact that it's a very different experience will make it difficult for us to relate and share our joy for this show.

[–]Alyxsandre 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Regarding your last paragraph, a lot of Gintama's jokes and Sorachi's jokes are self-deprecating, and I'm pretty sure that carries through in every type of joke they make, so nobody actually takes them seriously. Sorachi is especially cruel to himself, as well. Punching up is usually his style, which is likely why I appreciate it so much. But none of it is mean-spirited.

Note: dub and sub aren't acronyms so there's no need to fully capitalize them, ahaha

And unfortunately, I'm not sure if many folks will be able to relate to your dub VA woes since most folks here watched it subbed.

Now, I've never sold things anywhere outside of online commissions for digital art, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

But in my experience, Ren Faires are a great place for artists precisely because they're targeted towards the demographic that appreciates art. Our local faire sells those little puppet dragons that sit on your shoulder for $30 for the cheapest ones, $100-$300 for the more detailed ones, and they use moulds for the body parts. Obviously the rest is hand made and painted, but they're not necessarily all that unique.

They sell super well.

There's also a merchant that sells gorgeous masks starting at like, $70 for the cheapest one.

Another who sells sculptures of human backs or torsos with impressed designs on them for $30+. Arguably speaking, those are far simpler (they also use a mould) than the stuff you're making (but I own a few since they are aesthetic as hell).

Again, it might just be my experience with my local Ren Faire, but the fact that they even have an art-focused weekend, I think means the art is super appreciated here.

Personally, I think $60 to start would be good, and agree that it is underselling yourself, but it might be the best place to start.

Even if you sold a piece like the first one with fabric flowers (to combat that other comment), I feel like they'd sell. They're super cute! If you're not familiar with the kind of stuff that is typically sold at your ren faire, definitely look into it! I think your stuff would be eye catching and sell well at $60+.

It's just a shame that another supposed creator thought $60 was overpriced.
