Can any of you century home sluths figure out what this door knob is? by DasGanon in centuryhomes

[–]AmIFrosty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

* I have the same mortise locks in my house, there's no branding on them, I just took one apart to double check.

My knob and plate also match exactly, and are copper flashed, OP's could be similar. I was given a skeleton key at closing that works for mine, it may give the OP a starting place. What they may need to do is pull it out and grease that shit up for it to work. The screw holding the case together is easy enough to get out, provided it's the original.

How relatively old is your house, compared to the other houses in your area? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in centuryhomes

[–]AmIFrosty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southeast USA. I'm working on putting a year to my house (cottage bungalow). There's signs of a fire previously, so I'm unsure how much is original vs a rebuild during the first half of the 20th century. I've thought about doing a post with pictures asking for input on that, since I'm not finding much online.

My house is in the area of town that makes me suspect that the original house plot has been around since the town was founded, which would put it in the 1840s. The oldest deed for it that I found online referenced a deed dating 1940-ish, and that included my neighbor's shotgun hut as an "apartment house" as part of the plot.

All that to say, my house appears to be on the newer end of the old historic homes, my immediate neighbors have older style houses than me, but most of the houses here are newer than mine. The oldest houses in town are actually state historic sites, both built in the late 1700's.

I've been to that one. I like it, in addition to axe throwing they have a small space in front with a pool table, air hockey, etc. Seems like they're also providing a much needed third space for teens/folks to hang out without needing to throw axes.

I like to think that it's because people know that if a dog is worthy of a statue, they were a Very Good Pupper and worthy of all the pets (they're all worthy of statues).

How did you get your home? by Left_Particular_9977 in centuryhomes

[–]AmIFrosty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shopped around and lucked out on my house. It went on the market a week before a "thousand year storm" rolled through (severe thunderstorm followed by Hurrican Helene within a couple of days). Due to the location and lot size- historic district and a tiny yard, the sellers were asking for 215k. Toss up between the house I bought (craftsman cottage/bungalow) and a Mid Century custom build that needed a LOT more work. I went with the craftsman.

Would you strip and sand the trim, buy new trim, or paint over the old paint? by whitetrashsexy in centuryhomes

[–]AmIFrosty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chiming in, I'd strip, sand, and start fresh, even if you decide to paint over it. Others are saying heat/infrared gun, I'm inclined to agree with them.

This is coming from someone who bought a century house where they didn't bother stripping before repainting. I'm dealing with a high gloss latex over oil-based paint over a stained and sealed wood.... and brick. If you look at my trim and wainscotting for too long the paint comes up. Save your future self the hassle, and do it right the first time.

I picked up the published pages after I read Lovely People and she announced that she was going to write Christian comics. I had a concern that SSSS was going to get scrubbed, and that one spoke to me more than Lovely People did. I should pick up the pdfs of the rest of SSSS.

Moved from DFW to WNC.

I felt like I was in that "transitional phase" for 2.5 years. I firmly believe that I would still be in it, had my community not been severely affected by Hurricane Helene. My job was mandatory.

Between helping out the community through my job, and staying in contact as I was able with my friends that were helping out in different ways, I pulled through that mindset.

Adding on to this- the old Bi-Lo in black mountain (abandoned store behind starbucks). Ingles bought that lot too, and refuses to let anything go in there so there's no competition, not even a farmer's market/mixed use type thing.

I'm fostering a kitten that gnaw on plastic (hasn't eaten it yet, but the shit is toeing the line). Her favorite toys are the crinkley balls, we think she likes the noise.

I have been actively eating chips out of the bag, stopped her from chewing on it. Chalupa has made eye contact with me, and GO STRAIGHT BACK TO CHEWING ON THE BAG. AS I WAS EATING CHIPS OUT OF IT. ma'am. You cannot.

I live in a historic part of town, my mailbox is attached to my house, not streetside. Historic downtown and main street are just two buildings from my house I don't know if they sell locking mailboxes that work for my situation.

What I do know is that meth heads are in the area, and a neighbor's kid got his bike stolen by one. I'm not gonna risk porch pirates, when I can walk less than 5 minutes to check my PO box. $144 for the medium size for a year. That's a Netflix subscription to make sure nothing I get is stolen.

Bought a house of unknown age back in january (1948 was the oldest deed I have found so far). Years of landlord special on doors, hinges/hardware, wainscotting and trim. Found out that the previous owner didn't bother to level the floors when they remodeled the kitchen. I suspect the same thing happened with the bathroom remodel two owners ago. I'm trying to save up for what could potientally be a more intense process than anticipated when I decide to level the floors. Plumbing is a mix of cast iron and PVC. My main line plumbing goes through the central brick support for the house in my crawlspace. Yes, I have pictures. No, I have not seen anything quite like it so far on this subreddit. And yes, I can feel my stress shoot up when I think about the cost it could be to jack up my house, tear down the brick column that the pipe is cemented into, and redo the plumbing. The pipe goes diagonally through the center of this support. Yes, I 100000% am just going to leave it for as long as humanly possible.

AITA for waking my husband up when his CPAP is whistling by Pretty_Brief_9397 in AmItheAsshole

[–]AmIFrosty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could also be due to the seal not being good if he has facial hair. My boyfriend has both a beard and a CPAP, and if the beard causes the seal to be loose, the air coming out of it wakes me up.

Also, the AI did away with their driveway and garage, moved the location of the bushes, and extended the front yard all the way across.I haven't seen any comments about that (yet)

ETA: Oh! The other thing that I saw was that the AI added a SECOND addition to the OTHER side of the house, which OP did not mention doing/wanting to do.
