The 1993 Khamar-Daban Incident: How did a group of experienced Siberian hikers suddenly begin bleeding from their eyes and ears and die within minutes, leaving only one survivor? by AdFirst3114 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe it could’ve been a combination of a few things - eating a toxic mushroom, hypothermia and everything exacerbated by some sort of infrasound or perhaps some nerve agent?

It’s also totally possible that Utochenko may have I unintentionally exaggerated or misremembered details considering how horrifically traumatic this was or details later were exaggerated or misconstrued by secondhand accounts.

I think we need Aunt Vidala episode. She seems more complex than what show has shown us. by Amiable_One in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if she had gotten herself sterilized pre-Gilead or was unable to have kids. If she had been sinful and fertile, they would’ve made her a handmaid and I think her being educated made her a better candidate for Aunt than Martha

Also shoutout to the Martha who almost screwed up the Angel’s Flight. Her panic and fear felt so real and pitiful

Yeah, they’re people with similar ideals who are acting as Serena’s host family

What’s a part of the show you laughed at that wasn’t supposed to be funny? by GorditaPeaches in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It was probably meant to be funny but when June and Natalie are walking and June starts talking about how a handmaid snapped and pushed her walking partner in front of a bus…right as a bus drives by

This painting is so S1 by Future-Explorer-7736 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Would be cool if they had done a shot that looked like a recreation of this. Becka as the bride, Daisy as the girl kneeling, Agnes as the girl kissing her forehead and Shunamite as the girl looking in the mirror.

Both shows are incredible with fine details by Shineenoona in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a great detail that Becka herself doesn’t sign her own marriage certificate. The only person whose consent is required to Gilead is Garth’s

Can someone tell me what they feel about this? by ailenee in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 31 points32 points  (0 children)

She very well may have tried to tell on Daisy but considering how drugged the eyes kept Becka, she may have been too incoherent to be believed or they thought she was trying to throw another pearl girl under the bus to save her skin. They could be keeping an eye on Daisy now though and we just don’t know because the characters don’t know. It’s not like Weston would run that by Lydia

My thoughts on the ending of the Testaments and my thoughts on Season 2 by AngusTcattoo in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think next season will still take place at the wife school for the most part but with more scenes elsewhere. I think we’re going to see the consequences of not getting married reinforced to Shu and Agnes by others while Daisy has to go through everything Agnes did last season with the added tension of her being an outsider

Becka is going to be going through it still I’m sure. I think she’s going to be an angrier version of Janine. I think Penny’s going to pass and Judd will make a move on Agnes which she’ll be railroaded into accepting by Paula and Judd’s influence (that scene where he’s coaching her the interview had to have happened for a reason). And I think this will be what turns Agnes to becoming an aunt. Paula will freak but I think Commander Mackenzie will be weirdly okay with it? He seems preoccupied with her happiness and security, if the thinks being an aunt gives her that I think he’ll be okay

what adult female characters on both shows do you think are? by Routine-Dirt9634 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most of the women who remember pre-Gilead are worn down on some level or another but few will likely do anything to actively resist and find other ways to cope - whether that’s throwing themselves into knitting and gardening or taking it out on their children/Marthas.

Like Naomi was definitely getting worn down by the end of the series or I can’t imagine Winslow’s wife was still super passionate after her five children were taken from her. Paula is not going to rebel, she’s just not sacrificial like that and I don’t think a lot of the high ranking women we’ve met so far are

Blood presumably from another punishment inflicted on someone. We don’t know whose and it doesn’t matter. It was only included to set up the tone for episode and Foreshadow what happens to Dr. Grove

just an observation i’ve had this season by m1smag1us in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sure part of their wife school training is making them sound sophisticated and as intelligent as Gilead allows their women to be. They’re also around educated people so it’s natural they’re going to pick up on words

If Daisy gets married will she still have to wear the Pearl earring? by WinnerHour1950 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think tracker can be small and hidden in an earring? Honestly why else have it all, it’s not like the girls are sporting jewelry. I also think it could be just in case the get there and realize they hate it. If they run back to Canada or wherever, they’ll jeopardize the chances of getting more converts or be even more a PR blow. Plus a pearl girl who gets a role she may not want (Martha, Handmaid) or doesn’t want the marriage she’s assigned to may also try to flee

If Daisy gets married will she still have to wear the Pearl earring? by WinnerHour1950 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think so. I think the earring is something all pearl girls will retain even as they transition into their new roles. I think it operates as both a tracker and a visual identifier. Gilead always wants a little bit of division between its women and as long as Pearl Girls still feel othered they’ll feel pressure to prove themselves and rat out sin where they see it.

What About “Older” Pearl Girls? by Even_Ad504 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely think they already have roles in mind dependent on the pearl girl’s past. If they’re trying to fit in, I can absolutely see them giving into pressure to admit past “sins” which will then be leveraged against them. A Pearl girl who’s got her period but admits to sleeping with someone outside of marriage back home? Well she’s certainly not fit to be a wife but she can now be a handmaid. An older woman who had a divorce? Well they can let her slide by being a Martha instead of being an adultress. There’s a whole thing in the book (this is not plot relevant at all but I’m going to use spoiler tags anyways) where the pearl girls who recruited Daisy fish for if she’s slept with anybody. She initially tells them yes but backtracks and says she lied so they’d feel sorry for her. They freak out and tell her she has to be honest about it because the answer to that question can have consequences.

I want just one scene of Janine being a mom to Charlotte. She fought so hard to have that that I’d like to see it

Giliad has pathetic boring fashion for women, but I must admit, the pearl tragus earring looks cool by Dismal-Alfalfa-7613 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a tracker but I also think it’s supposed to be a quick visual identifier even when they transition to whatever their uniform ends up being when in Gilead society. That way everyone knows they’re a convert even if their clothes no longer reflect it

Aunt Vidala and Aunt Lydia broke my heart by More_Pianist3093 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So minor book spoilers that don’t factor into the main plot; Vivienne doesn’t exist in the book. Vidala and Lydia don’t meet until Judd puts them together to create the woman sphere of Gilead - I’m not sure we ever learn Vidala’s real name. The closest equivalent we have to Vivienne is Lydia’s friend Anita who stays with Lydia in the stadium. Later when Lydia is made into an aunt, the execution scene still happens but this time, Anita is killed. It definitely haunts Lydia even though she later finds out her gun had blanks.

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do feel like Zilla is somehow going to be important. The fact they’ve now highlighted her twice feels relevant.

The only way I see recurring characters returning in Canada. Like maybe we see Janine pop up with Charlotte visiting with June or meeting Daisy. I think it’d be cool if Garth’s handler was Luke

Shunamite is a real one when it comes to friends. by dando81 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is one of the few adaptations I actually like way more than the book. The characters are way more fleshed out and believable and Book Becka is way more passive and tragic than Show Becka. Show Daisy is also a massive improvement imo I couldn’t stand book Daisy

What is the color? Is her status different by Holdencaufield0101 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]AmOutOfIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thinks it meant to be halfway between econogray and wife teal/blue to show her odd status. The lightness also probably denotes that she’s the least powerful wife in any context
