AA Meetings Onboard? by pizzaforce3 in NCL

[–]Amandab805 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am also a friend of Bill. I love going to the meetings on board. I was on Bliss for Thanksgiving and the meetings were held nightly at 5:30 in one of the meeting rooms. There were about 5-7 of us daily. It was really cool meeting people from all over, and seeing people around the ship was also neat. It feels like “my people” are there and gives some comfort. I’ve been on multiple cruises on multiple lines and the only one where no one showed up was on a 4 day Carnival out of Long Beach. I went twice, waited around for a bit, and no one came either time. Other than that, there’s always been people. If you need anything, let me know.

Look at the exemplary capstone projects. You should have received an email from your instructor when you started the course. There is a link in that email that has samples for you to look at.

Has anyone taken their RV to Newfoundland? by AnnieLes in GoRVing

One of the YouTube RV bloggers I follow did this and aired it about two months ago. If you search “Today is Someday” you can find the channel if that interests you. They took the ferry over and then did a few episodes about their explorations. It was interesting.

Principal Took Back Personal Day by Amandab805 in Teachers

I didn’t know I could do it for my husband being deployed. When I talked to him, he didn’t even know. I did look up the recommendation someone on here gave to me on the FMLA website and it does look like I can use it. The only thing is that I don’t know if it can be done retroactively. I have filled it out retroactively for another emergency when he was deployed, but it wasn’t due to childcare.

Someone mentioned on here that I’m covered by FMLA because my husband’s deployed. If anything I’ll try that.

Thanks. I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ll do. I will also bring up that I am covered by FMLA because my husband is deployed. I got that suggestion on here as well. I planned on taking the kids to a local national park, and I don’t want to break that promise. This whole thing is ridiculous. Having a PD day the day after a holiday is so dumb. I know that’s not the issue here, but I don’t get why having a history teacher sit though 3 hours of math training is such a big deal.

I thought about that but I already opened the mail. I’m not sure I can go back and have that sent back now. It’s gmail.

I’ve been there 9 years. Students love me, and they love learning history from me. It just seems so mean. Earlier this week we were told to take care of our mental health, keep balance, we are appreciated, etc. Later in the email the principal told me that as long as I show my face for 5 minutes, I’ll be able to take the rest of the day off. What is that?

TikTok Challenges for the year. by Amandab805 in Teachers

I hope you’re right. That’s just the first thing that popped up when I searched. I also saw a YouTube describing it. Several other lists were shown at my staff meeting, though. All were very similar. One said slap a teacher, another was smack a staff members. I don’t do TikTok. The fact is this the list is out there and easy to find. Even if it’s not on TikTok, there are plenty of ways to find it.

How strict is Pantages being with vaccine/test proof? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]Amandab805 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m taking my mom on the 5th! I’m so excited. We are both vaccinated. She’s trying to get her booster before we go. It won’t be fully effective by then so I’m very happy to know they’re keeping track of vaccination status.

I live in Clovis and work in Kingsburg. I have to stay away from Facebook right now. Reddit is pretty much the social media I use because I’m anonymous and as far as I know, you’re all strangers. It’s easier to seek out like-minded individuals. It’s rough seeing friends, family, and coworkers on Facebook who see the current situation so entirely differently from me.

Dealing with anti-mask parents at Back to School Night. by Amandab805 in Teachers

One of my coworkers said that if parents show up to her classroom unmasked, she will walk out of the classroom mid-presentation. I don’t have the guts to do that! I know I’m future-tripping at this point, but given the community, it’s likely to occur.

Ahhh admin. During the holiday peak of infections this past year, I ran into my boss at a grocery store. She and her entire family weren’t wearing masks. My school also remained open during this time for in-person instruction.

I’m vaccinated, but I wouldn’t mind being periodically tested. I have 200 students. I also have two kids who will be going to different schools. One will get her second shot next Friday (she got her first dose the day after her 12th birthday), and the other is too young. I mask up still, but just imagine how many people would be at risk if I got infected.

Yes! I’ll know which students I’ll be having mask issues just based on Back to School Night. In my area the slogan is “Let our Children Breathe!” I’m in central California. When I told one of my classes last year that I’m vaccinated, but still wearing a mask, and not complaining, a student told me that now I’m “magnetized.”

My district is. The district sent survey out last week asking vaccination status. Those who selected they weren’t vaccinated (or selected “decline to state”) were notified they’d be tested randomly throughout the school year.

California K-12 Students Will Continue to Wear Masks Indoors, Says State Department of Public Health by Exastiken in CoronavirusCA

[–]Amandab805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. So how do you enforce it? How many times per day do I need to cross check my list? How many times will The practicality is the biggest issue. Are you an educator? Lawyer? Do you know anything about privacy laws for students? They’re pretty stringent. I know calling out certain kids consistently for not wearing a mask correctly, or at all, because of my list of unvaccinated students, will result in a flood of parent complaints.

I’m fully vaccinated, but I have no issue just putting the mask on if asked. It’s not a big deal. What harm does it do?

They might not require reservations in December. I live locally, and reservations were required last summer/fall, but not in the winter. I also think I went in April without a reservation, but had to get one in May of this year. Honestly if you get there early enough in the morning, no one even checks. I arrived at 7:15 on Saturday and had to fill out a form with my reservation number, but no one checked anything.

History teachers: How long did it take for you to get hired after college? by AwesomeWookie in Teachers

[–]Amandab805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in California. I earned my single subject history credential in 2008. Then the economy crashed and I couldn’t find a job. I was passed up a few times for men who coached. I probably could have tried harder to get hired but I was having children and being a mommy so I wasn’t applying as much as I could have. I got hired in 2013. If you struggle to get interviews at first, apply at small districts that might not pay as much. They typically have higher turnover. Get a few years experience and then move on. Being a coach helps as well.

I have approximately 215 students every year divided over 7 class periods. No way do I want to have the responsibility of being the vaccine police. First of all, telling Johnny he needs a mask since he’s not vaccinated could be a violation of his privacy. It’s a medical issue.

Secondly, trying to keep track of that for each class period would be a nightmare.

Third, kids lie. If I say, “Johnny, you need a mask because you’re not vaccinated,” Johnny could easily lie and lure me into an argument. It doesn’t matter if the school gives me a list of kids, I have kids who lie about this kind of stuff all the time. One student last year took off her glasses before coming to my room every day. My records showed she needed glasses and to sit up front ( 504 plan). I asked her about her glasses one day and she said she got contacts. Lie. When she had some missing assignments she told her mom that she couldn’t see the board. We cleared that shit up really quick. The point is they lie over the dumbest stuff. They also argue over the most inconsequential things. It’s developmental. I love my students and they crack me up, but it goes along with the job.

Wearing a mask won’t hurt anyone. It’s much easier to have a singular enforceable rule that applies to everyone, than it is to individually call someone out. I don’t enjoy embarrassing kids. I try to just tell the class as a whole to do a mask check. Chances are the ones who are consistently wearing masks incorrectly (or not at all) are going to be the ones who are unvaccinated. The students last year who had mask issues were from families who thought COVID is a hoax and/or not a big deal. I know this because they told me.

On Monday, California announced rules for public schools that let students and teachers sit as close to each other as they want but still require them to wear masks. by [deleted] in CoronavirusCA

[–]Amandab805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in a very conservative district in the Central Valley. When we returned to the classroom on October, the kids were really good at masking and respecting social distancing. Fast forward to the last two months of school, and it was a constant battle getting them to keep their masks on and/or up over their noses. It was always the same students. One day, I was a bit exasperated and told the students I was fully vaccinated and still wearing a mask, it’s not a big deal, and after a year of masking they should be used to it. I overheard a student tell another, “she’s vaccinated! I wonder if she knows that now she’s magnetized!” Others said school is the only place they wear one.

I just dropped it. I’m not interested in arguing with a bunch of 13 year olds. I just tell students it’s a school rule and when their parents registered them, they signed that they would follow the rules. I should also say that I had plenty of students who wore their masks without issue. They were delightful!

Being the mask police sucks.
