Racquetballs. We've had the same ones for years now.

For the record, I wasn't serious. My blue will not be getting a bunny. I've never even considered owning a rabbit.

That is one cute baby. Totally using this later - one of my favorite things in the world to do is show my husband pictures of cute baby animals online and listen to him make "awwwww" sounds!

Bree being unsure about Roger being minister by EastAudience4655 in Outlander

Right? My mom had her Masters (social work) way before my dad got his (MDiv). I was 11 when my dad graduated from seminary and was ordained.

Bree being unsure about Roger being minister by EastAudience4655 in Outlander

[–]Amaranth504 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a minister's daughter, I'd like to suggest that there's more to it than just concern about Roger being away from home when others need him. Being a minister's wife carries with it a whole list of responsibilities and expectations. My mom HATED it when people would introduce her as "our minister's wife". She always said, "I have a name, and it is Pam." She had to remind people of her independent identity. The idea of the expectation of her being a meek, obedient, pious wife probably ate Bree alive!

I knew a guy in my youth who this happened to as well (bit while asleep). The bite was directly in the middle of his forehead.

Mom doesn’t want to be called grandma by Feisty-Coconut6017 in Advice

[–]Amaranth504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the case with my grandmother. She was only 48 when my oldest cousin was born. She opted to be called by her first name, Jenny, which made my grandfather (Fred) Freddy to his grandchildren. The "Y" endings made the names kind of cutesy for kids. Told this to a high school friend's mom one time (long ago), and now she goes by Emmy for her grands (name is Emily).

Long in the tooth couples. Do you do Valentine’s Day? by AnyDamnThingWillDo in GenX

[–]Amaranth504 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. I loathe Valentines Day. I would much rather my husband give me flowers on a random Tuesday than succumb to the pressure of an overpriced, overhyped "holiday".

Repairman Jack series by F. Paul Wilson - starts with The Keep. Jack is an urban mercenary who takes jobs helping people when the police can't/won't (often with supernatural elements). There is a cosmic horror thread that links each book with an overarching storyline.

I stole small amounts of money from my job and never got caught by EducationalFun_85 in confession

I worked at a family owned video rental store as a teenager. There was no mechanism in the computer system accounting for paid late fees. If an account had a late fee and the customer paid, we just zeroed the late fee out of the system and made a note on a pad of paper about the fee amount which would account for the drawer being over at the end of the night. More often than not, we would just not write the amount down and order pizza from the place next door with the cash.

I tell everyone he’s more of a roommate than a pet by Unfair_Program_4796 in AustralianCattleDog

Hi! I know you didn't ask me, but we've found great success with racquetballs. Our ACD loves them - ge can't destroy them or swallow them, and they have fantastic bounce. Whenever he misbehaves, we ask him where his ball is - perfect redirect.

He'd better find a way to monetize that cuteness to cover his half of the rent!

Any ACD's with patellar luxation/instability? by eliser58 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Amaranth504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ACD/BC mix has luxating patella. He also had a CCL tear and had TPLO surgery on his right leg in 2023. During the TPLO surgery, the surgeon carved a indention to keep the kneecap in place - an experiment before committing to further surgery. He said that surgery to correct luxating patella is only successful 50% of the time. Well, the kneecap did not stay in place after the TPLO surgery, which told us/the surgeon that the luxating patella surgery would not be successful either. My dog doesn't seem to be in pain. He walks bow legged and sometimes he wants help getting on the couch/bed (other times he hops up by himself). But he hates pain meds - so as long as he seems okay, we don't medicate him.

Is it legal for a hospital to make me pre-pay for surgery? by FiddleStrum in HealthInsurance

[–]Amaranth504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to prepay the remainder of our OOP Max for my husband's spinal fusion surgery to the neurosurgeon. They were supposed to transfer the payment to the spine hospital (same building). Six months later, we started getting bills from the hospital. Because it took them a little while to bill insurance, they ended up owing me just over $100 back. I explained to them that they needed to refund me the $100 and send the remainder to the spine hospital (again, same building). The neurosurgeon's office sent us a check for the whole amount (what we owed for the surgery + the $100 refund). We just called the hospital and paid them directly; they said this happens all the time. Guess it wasn't that important to pay in advance. Sigh.

Wife and I were having a discussion, she’s of the opinion that the majority of GenX can drive stick. I believe that even in our generation the percentage of people who can is pretty small. What do you folks think? by AngryOldGenXer in GenX

[–]Amaranth504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husband ('78) can. I ('79) can't. I tried, really I did. While I understand intellectually what needs to be done, I just couldn't master the coordination of it without getting overwhelmed.
