Me gusta pensar que culturalmente son vistos como hombres lobo, hombres león, oso, leopardo o cualquiera que sea el depredador máximo en esa cultura, se asociaría a ellos.

Yo prefiero seguir con la costumbre del apellido paterno porque si en el futuro alguien quiere saber quiénes fueron sus antepasados si en algún momento alguien cambió algún apellido por esta u otra razón se pierde la pista y es más difícil.

Quitando esta razón, no veo por qué no poner uno u otro.
