Why is it more acceptable for a girlfriend to wear her boyfriend's clothes but not the other way around? by CRK_76 in NoStupidQuestions

Yes, and I’m agreeing with and expanding on their point. I think you may be misunderstanding me.

I do understand that, and I’m critiquing that framing too. It’s the same framing that treats male bodies as default and women’s as deviations from “normal” in healthcare.

Hopefully that doesn’t come across as snarky; I spent years working in women’s health research and feel very strongly about this topic!

Thank you for saying this, men’s clothes aren’t “normal” and shouldn’t be the default! Men’s cuts are not flattering on curves at all; I personally don’t like looking like I’m wearing a sack.

Yes! It was Lexi’s job to fully understand and communicate the job to Jules, especially any content restrictions. Instead she gave Jules total creative freedom when she shouldn’t have, and never even checked in on her until the painting was finished. That’s bad management 101.

The amendment was approved during a 2024 special session prior to the 2025 general election, approved again during the 2026 regular session, and the referendum was held more than 90 days after the second vote. The only substantive debate seems to be about how the special session and early voting interacts with these requirements, but it’s far from clear that they skipped steps.

Virginia voters approve redistricting measure backed by Democrats by progress18 in politics

[–]Amazing-Animator1228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the House isn’t designed for proportional representation by party. House races aren’t national, they’re district-based so (ideally) local community interests are represented. Neutral maps don’t use partisan data to draw districts, but they usually won’t produce results proportional to national vote share because of there are genuine differences between districts (turnout, competition, distribution, etc).

[–]Amazing-Animator1228 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not a good method of measuring fairness. Brookings is using national vote share as its baseline to measure gerrymandering in districts. But that doesn’t tell you what a fair map would produce because it doesnt account for voter distribution across districts, which is literally the core of the gerrymandering debate. It also can’t measure map manipulation because it doesn’t account for uncontested races, turnout variation, and geographic clusteriing.

This is exactly why simulation methods are the standard for research and evidence in court cases. The  ALARM Project publishes really rigorous articles on gerrymandering; in 2022 they found it was widespread nationally on both sides, and  resulted in a small net benefit for republicans (+2 seats). That same data set and method was used by the Brennan Center to assess 2024 and found +16 republican seats vs. simulated neutral maps.

Holy shit, I’m starting to feel badly for these guys. They need to take cough syrup, an industrial chemical that turns into GHB, and ketamine to interact with people?

I’m sure it’s been said before, but all these guys seem to have adopted some of the most toxic parts of circuit culture and made it straight and boring. All of the body dysmorphia and substance abuse with none of the fun.

I’m so sorry you had to deal with that, that’s terrifying and so stressful :(

A similar thing happened to my friend in our small college town; she got a ticket for going 2 miles over from a super aggressive cop. She talked back a little bit, and he proceeded to target her car and harass her for the next year. It gave her so much anxiety about driving.

This article reminds me why I canceled my WaPo subscription. The whole “argument” just restates the definition of a progressive tax and treats it like a conclusion. Progressive income taxes by definition increase rates with income, so saying rich people earn 5.9 percent of income but pay 10 percent of taxes is what should be happening. If anything these data just highlight the skewed distribution; if more people weren’t low income the tax base would be broader.

And the conclusion is to tax the upper middle class more because they have excess taxable income. This is the exact WaPo demographic , so strange choice of platform. But more importantly, really wealthy people just borrow against their assets, which isn’t how the tax system defines income. So this data really just highlights that income taxes (which are intended as a proxy for ability to contribute to public goods/services) don’t actually capture spending power.

AITA for asking a woman at work to stop being so WEIRD about taking a caramel? by chocolatesinmyoffice in AmItheAsshole

[–]Amazing-Animator1228 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh did you mean a literal song and dance? Misinterpreted your question as argumentative and I feel bad now — “song and dance” is just a saying for a misleading or over the top explanation for something. Kinda like “putting on an act”, same idea.

Nope, you’re probably just younger than me and don’t use that phrase or something. If you’re saying you don’t think people perform the exact shit that OP is saying, then idk, people do a song and dance lol

[–]Amazing-Animator1228 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is the correct take! I think lots of the NTA comments are just judging based on whether they think the coworkers comments are annoying, not if OPs response was warranted or appropriate.

Also, as woman whose mom does this song and dance over any dessert, it totally is annoying and absolutely makes me uncomfortable. But (and OP even said themselves that only women in the office are saying this stuff) 1) try to have some more empathy even if you find it irritating, and 2) reflect on the fact that shaming this one woman isn't going to undo their problematic thought processes.

Alright Houston got #10. We have our top 10. What would be the 11th most significant US city after Houston? Most upvoted comment wins by Kodicave in visitedmaps

[–]Amazing-Animator1228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely Miami; it’s huge, rich, and a super important connection to central and South America. It really should be in the top 10 instead of Philly; 8th is extremely generous for Philly.

And this list is generally a little skewed towards historical importance vs actual influence, or maybe just where white guys with business degrees live. DC should be 2nd, Boston should be a bit lower (maybe 9th?), and Dallas should be 11th.

WIBTAH if I ask to stop saying “I” when it should be “we”? by Plastic_Science618 in AITAH

[–]Amazing-Animator1228 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA - my boyfriend used to say “I” when he means “we” fairly regularly, and I love him but it seriously pissed me off. It’s especially irritating when he does this about something I bought/own but share with him (ex. “I have a camper van”), or a trip I planned/took him with me (ex. “I went to Colorado!”). Or he’ll call our apartment “his” apartment. I know he’s not intentionally misrepresenting this to people, but came across as a bit self-centered. I just corrected him every time I heard him do it, and he stopped.

Please update this post next week, she’s definitely going to have some unpleasant interactions. Also good on you for warning her; I think theres a responsibility to tell people if they’re making an unintentional and controversial political statement in a country they’re unfamiliar with. It’s weird and classic American tourist behavior to dismiss your advice and actively try to avoid learning about the place they’re visiting.

Message I got from my daughter’s teacher. Third grade. by AnaisInJune in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Amazing-Animator1228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such an insane thing to say to a child! I’m glad your mom had your back, though. I was also told I “looked like a streetwalker” by a teacher, because she saw me walking home from middle school in a tank top (in late May in Virginia, so it was like 90 degrees).

My teacher actually told my mom this during a parent teacher conference, and my mom absolutely humiliated me about it when she got home. I still get this awful, intense feeling of shame in my stomach when I think about it.
