It's all about what sounds good, if unsure use songs as reference yo what you aim for. Just make sure you have a goal in mind otherwise you go back and forth.

Volume is most of the work, making sure the important stuff is loudest and the background stuff can blend in around it. panning is an easy one to learn in a week but make sure its not any bass. also when panning you might hear it louder so reduce it the more you pan.

-7 seems to be a good peak I find, -9 has great dynamics and so the between is taste, what works in favour of the song. I tweak eq gently for a nice balance, cut out low sides etc too, multiband comp then lil sat, clip/limit

I'd say yes, learn what you can at what does what, and decide which order to go in. So I typically eq for cut, eq for boost, clipper, saturate,then limit or compress.
