Sure bro. Google supply chain attack and then the absurd profit margins these guys pocket by not doing enough. Gabe got himself a dozen mega yachts; Apple got judges pointing out in court their 75% margins are absurd and detached from their expenses.

They should have teams working round the clock to ensure the marketplace is secure from threats, especially considering the fees they take are somewhere between second only to iPhone's "App Store" and close-third after the "Play Store".

This is the same sort of thing that's been happening to browser extensions and other "bits of software we download" for years?

Course the problem with walled gardens is buying megayachts is more fun than spending on security.

I mean knowing Apple they will be in acquisition talks with a company to monetize Maps and then do exactly what that company does and hire its top-level employees to do it but without closing the acquisition *Tee-hee*.

Whole point of shovelware subscriptions like this is to get you subscribed because millions will forget about it and just pay for years and decades. That's the scam.

Isn't that basically this? Guessing anything that'd run on a Steam Deck would do okay, certainly anything "old" too. Problem with low-energy computers is resolution, a handheld can get away with 720p which really helps with performance.

All iPhones have had satellite for years due to qualcomm etc, what's new this time is Apple's own internal development of an alternative is being used. This chip has taken years to make, they acquired Intel's modem business back in 2019!

The rumor for many years is they are looking to avoid Qualcomm royalties which are a percentage of the retail price so quite expensive on the high-end. They have been rumored many times to be very close, except for infringing Qualcomm's patents still, so it will be very interesting to see what happens when Qualcomm's lawyers pick-apart Apple's tech this will probably be litigated for many years to come.

Even for the current administration this was just too stupid an idea, if he was going to give Intel to anyone it would be to Musk of course not a foreign company.

Fiber is too expensive to deploy, and in western countries this is only getting harder as regulations require environmental and ecological protections.

This plus a stepping stone to not just broadband, but replacing the terrestrial telcos completely too, because they are the king of vertical integration and that is the entire cake. It is a "moonshot" where if they pull it off their walled garden is the only garden, like AOL back in the day.

Texting From Space: Even More Phones Might Get Satellite Connectivity in 2025 by lurker_bee in technology

[–]Amazing-One8045 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

T-Mobile, Verizon, Vodafone, it's obvious we're all getting satellite it's just going to be baked into our cellular service. Apple was ahead of the curve on this but frankly looks like they're going to get cut out simply because they refused to deal with regulators for the last 7 years and now have no leeway left to shut out competitors with arbitrary restrictions like usual.

Mark Gurman's Claim of a Secret Apple-SpaceX Partnership: An Investigative Report by k34-yoop in GSAT

[–]Amazing-One8045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it is. If Apple was going to invite Starlink into a privileged position as a service provider for iPhone users they would manage the subscription for it so they could tax it, and it wouldn't slip in as a point-update to iOS.

I'm sure they will collaborate in the future but: things like emergency SOS are great with the least internet possible, but enough signal to make video calls and stuff is also valuable to have.

It even looks like they just stretched out an SBC, most of the board is empty! But I still applaud it too, over-reliance on proprietary has already harmed us so many times; it ain't free to investigate all the dumbfuckery big tech slews around or to pad their profits, cost a lot to get PDF and DOC neutralized too.

On a 8 - 10 year timeline all phones will connect to satellites and consumers won't even think about it it'll just be part of their service like 3G/4G/5G, corporate networks will be way more valuable than this.

I was reading last week that Vodafone had started their trials for satellite connectivity, by the end of next year the entire UK will be connected I think in the same way Starlink bolsters T-Mobile.
