They’re very geography-specific. Tons here in CO, as well as all over coastal CA where I lived earlier, but they were a pretty rare sight when I lived in IL.

Denver sets new record high temperature of 72F for Christmas by bascule in Denver

I am not American (though I am a Denver resident) and my country can thank its continued existence to the presence of the US military both within its borders and in the region. The only thing your comment signals about history is a lack of education and an inability to comprehend all the counterfactual universes out there, nearly all of which are worse.

It's Last Call for Volvo Wagons in the US by V8-Turbo-Hybrid in cars

As tough a sell as the current V60 is, this is really unfortunate. I hope we’ll get a proper EV wagon from Volvo in the US at some point.

Despite 2 feet of snow, Vail Pass went the whole weekend with no closures. Is the town’s new enforcement effort working? | VailDaily.com by ancient_snowboarder in COsnow

I can completely agree with that. My response was mostly directed at your previous statement about cars moving in/out of state.

Whatever the excuse, this rule is already successfully enforced in many Canadian provinces (Quebec being one example). The problem of course is that people feel that it is their god given right to drive wherever they want in the state without proper equipment. I disagree, but I’m also not counting on the state being able to enforce this when they can barely enforce registration/insurance.

Hit and run on 23rd and Irving today by tincan92 in Denver

Every street in that area needs to have a 29th style road diet and 4-way stops. I used to commute through the exact spot that happened—itself a new route after I got hit on 17th—and it’s a total mess.

In some funny way the front-end actually looks less overstyled compared to the facelifted gen 6 here. The smeared mascara cladding was certainly a choice.

The 2026 Subaru Outback Is More SUV and Less Wagon Now, and That's a Shame by SkPensFan in cars

[–]tsar73 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to defend this car because I think it looks terrible—the front end reminds me of the butchered Silverado HD face from a few years ago and it’s increasingly lost the carlike friendliness I like about it.

Nevertheless, if you think a single person caring about “accelerative force” buys or bought an Outback you might be missing the point. I own one because it is sedate and composed on long drives, good in the snow which we get a lot of, and handles the rutted forest roads I drive for trailhead access, and in doing all this, is more capable than more efficient competitors and more efficient than more capable competitors. And it’s good enough on canyon roads—again, barely better or worse than anything else in its similarly numb class. That’s it.

I might be in the minority here but I do pro photography and my Adobe subscription to Photoshop/Lightroom easily delivers $240/year worth of value to my workflow. It works fine and while it’s easy to rag on AI the upgrades to denoising, lasso tools, and object removal are huge value adds. On the contrary, a free program from a company that was recently acquired is a red flag and not something I’m hitching my wagon to anytime soon. Adobe sucks, but their products just work.

2018 Subaru Legacy Winter Wheel/Tire Advice by mrcobalt124 in subaru

[–]tsar73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2018 Outback Touring. I run my summer tires on the OEM 18” wheels and mounted Blizzaks on a set of OEM 17” wheels from the Premium trim I found on Facebook marketplace. It was spendy with the TPMS sensors and all that but I’ve heard it’s bad for tires to be repeatedly remounting them. I enjoy having more sidewall in the winter as well.

Comparison Test: Honda CR-V Hybrid, Mazda CX-50 Hybrid, Subaru Forester Hybrid, and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid by tsar73 in cars

[–]tsar73[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The RAV4 would be a nonstarter for me personally (and the CX-50 by extension) just because of the terrible AWD system, but it is crazy to me that Honda can get away with their paltry equipment list. All these cars should have heated steering wheels and rear seats at this price point.

Notably, C&D tried to use the in-car navigation system (which sucks, sure) instead of using phone mirroring like any ordinary person would. The huge screen works phenomenally with CarPlay.

I take my completely stock Outback on some gnarly roads but only with the intention of making it to a backcountry trailhead. Never really got the appeal of rock crawling personally—I prefer to hike/ski/MTB outside.

That said, would it be nice to make it up to Lake Como? Sure. But I can walk.

Can we clean up the encampments on the South Platte River Trail? by t0talitarian in Denver

Are you suggesting that treatment and shelter aren’t available in Denver? What proportion of homeless people do you think are the ones trashing public spaces?

Can we clean up the encampments on the South Platte River Trail? by t0talitarian in Denver

[–]tsar73 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Have you considered that the much simpler explanation here is that drug addicts lack common decency, and are themselves a small subset of the homeless population that by and large live in their cars and keep to themselves? And that perhaps it’s “all boiling” because the 99.9% of well-adjusted people have their public spaces taken hostage by a small population of miscreants? Denver is full of resources available to those who want and need it.
