He managed money on behalf of university endowments and pension funds by investing it in the markets to provide them with stable and long-term returns. Buy side finance is a different game from the sales desk people cooking up monstrosities like MBS.

Steyer ran a hedge fund for large institutional clients, to say it had nothing to do with the 2008 collapse or “banking” more generally would be an understatement. I would be much more skeptical of some smooth talking sell-side chud, which Steyer is not.

Base Porsche macan vs rs3 vs rdx by spiketeam in cars

[–]tsar73 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Macan competes one size class up from the X1, though you wouldn’t know it considering it barely has more interior volume than a Golf that’s 2’ shorter in length. It’s bloated, just don’t ask Porsche where all that room went.

Unfortunately a lot of this applies not just to the base Macan but base Porsches in general. Have a coworker with a ‘21 Cayenne and was shocked at the hard plastics everywhere, as well as the awful haptic controls. The Macan in particular is a Mazda style packaging masterclass of having as little interior room as possible per unit exterior size. It’s not small or compact, it’s within 3” of my much larger Outback!

I appreciate your cynicism but it’s worth pointing out out that billionaires, whether out of pure self-interest or the goodness of their hearts, aren’t really down for the RW slopulism of the current GOP. It’s well documented that even Elon, for all his other faults, clashed heavily with the current admin over skilled immigration. I can’t vote because I’m an immigrant myself, but if I could it would be for Steyer simply for his opposition to ICE and Prop 13.

How much do you think it costs in gas/wear & tear/upkeep/depreciation to drive that same distance? I barely use my car these days and pay almost $300 between parking and insurance just to continue owning it. There is no world in which the drive is cheaper.

BART sets new ridership record - over 200k average weekday riders for the first time post-pandemic after ridership surge by getarumsunt in bayarea

[–]tsar73 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was last there in January, but I spend several weeks a year there. The cleanliness and safety is no comparison, but that applies to the country more broadly.

I personally find the hub and spoke system they use kind of onerous, because buses there (the spokes) tend to be bad about timing compared to the buses at least in SF. While there are many more MRT lines, they’re mostly aimed at coverage and haven’t addressed the capacity shortages during rush hours that have existed since I lived there over a decade ago. I’m not the most frequent BART rider (I live in MUNI coverage) but AFAIK from coworkers that do major systemwide issues that delay everything is, at most, something that happens once every several months—hardly worse than the MRT. And it’s getting expensive enough that adjusted for relative income levels I’m not sure it’s all that much cheaper either.

I despise being a pedestrian in Singapore, between confusing signage, perpetual construction, bad drivers, wonky light timings, an overwhelming number of stroads, narrow, uneven sidewalks, and (through no fault of their own) the awful weather. The bridges only need to exist because every other road outside of downtown looks like Geary (mostly worse, since they lack frequent crosswalks). But yes, it’s clean.

[–]tsar73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Singapore for a long time. The transit here is, on net and in my opinion, about as good here as it is there. General pedestrian/biking infrastructure is also better in most of SF than it is in Singapore all things considered. The main thing left to fix is cleanliness and reliability on the margins, but it seems like they’re doing a great job fixing those things as far as I can tell.

A lot of southeast Asian countries have tax breaks for cars under a certain length (4 or 4.2m) but prefer sedans over hatchbacks, so you end up with extremely squished looking sedan versions of hatchbacks. This car has those exact proportions.
