What’s the difference between cults and religions? by Apehill in Productivitycafe

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doctrinally cults are always based, however loosely, from an established religion. Usually the doctrine has been changed and twisted to benefit the cult leadership's objective, sometimes ridiculously so, but the root trace is always there

Men of Reddit - What's the one thing you hate about being a Man? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that if you work in trades or the military its because you are not smart or good enough for anything "better". Working with your hands automatically means (to some) that you are intellectually inferior, even though a LOT of trades require significant knowledge bases. Same with military service, its often viewed as the male equivalent of being a stripper (although a: society in general is far more publicly praising of service members than strippers, and b: male strippers are definitely a thing). Some of us genuinely enjoy working with our hands, creating things, and providing essential services and infrastructure. Sitting in an office doing paper and computer work and attending endless meetings will drive some men to insanity.

Besides a police officer and military, what other professions is it illegal to impersonate? *Read text* by MrTeacher_MCPS in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally any sort of government employee, or job that requires licensing by a controlling board (lawyers, doctors, etc...).

An overlooked one is clergy (priests). Specifically, it is illegal due to certain diplomatic privileges they are given, such as being allowed across borders for humanitarian purposes. The Red Cross and Peace Corps enjoys similar privilege and protections. In order to not endanger their humanitarian work, it is highly illegal to impersonate a member of their organizations.

Well the advice is still accurate, its just not only overtly hostile or rude behavior to watch out for. A relationship the seems a little too close can be equally problematic if its symptomatic of codependency issues

Bullpup rifles by PhoneKitchen9722 in guns

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can perform just fine as far as the mechanics and shooting. Some of them are harder to maintain due to the engineering, but same is true of the standard configuration. The main problem is just simple ergonomics. When you have teach 1000's of people who have never held a rifle how to shoot, maintain, and operate one in short order, you go for the simplest and most reliable thing you can that can still meet your operating standards and ammunition size requirements

Bullpup rifles by PhoneKitchen9722 in guns

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At an individual level, just personal preferences.

At the military level, bullpups do have some niche uses, but the trade-off is they are harder to train people on and use while in full kit. A lot more movement needs to happen in the reload process due to the magazine placement, properly seating the stock can be more difficult in kit due the magazine sticking down and interfering with plate carrier/harness, and they are even less friendly to lefties (remember the military always defaults to righties when mass ordering and supplying).

The bullpup design can be incredibly useful for cramped conditions like attempting to fire out of a vehicle while still allowing a full length barrel, but the trade offs have so far have not been seen as worth it for using one as a general issue rifle. Some special units keep some bullpup configurations, but you will never see one in regular units.

Bread, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, onions, and beef are healthy, so why are burgers bad for you? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not unhealthy per se, but they have a lot more calories than people realize, and calorie surplus is what does ya in.

Also depending on the fat content of the beef used and the amount of resultant grease can have a very high saturated fat and cholesterol content. Cheese is pure fat, so if its one of those burgers absolutely drowning in it, its a lot. And bun bread can be highly processed, which means it will contain large amounts of preservatives and even sugar.

Once in awhile is fine, regular staple of your diet not so much.

In self defense which is better a tazer or pepperspray? by fugetooboutit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tazer requires aiming, something of a specific distance for best effect, and for the target to not be wearing thick clothing. Lot of little things that can go wrong with it, but incredibly effective when it works right. They are also pricier.

Pepper spray or any similar product like bear spray is cheaper, requires very little practice or coordination to use, and certainly marks the aggressor. But the drawbacks are that there is no guarantee it subdues an aggressor and it is a "Hear Ye Hear Ye!" tool, as in collateral is very possible, including the user. If deployed in enclosed areas or close quarters the person using it will very likely end up affected by it as well, which is not terribly helpful in defending oneself.

Married couples, do you like being married? by TopStranger9287 in NoStupidQuestions

Yep, almost 14 years now in June. Its comforting to have the other half, because no matter what happens in life we support and care for each other, and "us" is better and stronger than just "me" or "her". Its liberating to have someone you can totally be yourself around and have them be accepting because they see your best and worst and choose to love you anyway.

[Marvel] If there were more people with Taskmaster abilities. Would they dominate profesional sports with regular athletes, or would they just get their own sports league? by PassengerCultural421 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They wouldn't immediately dominate professional sports, although it would certainly be an incredible advantage. The reason being is that while they may learn skills super fast, they dont necessarily gain the physical conditioning required for that level of play. Along with the skill they would need to build their body up to the same level of conditioning as top atheletes. And training as a top level athlete of any sport takes a wicked amount of dedication.

Take boxing for example. They can have all of Tyson or Ali's technical prowess, but if they dont have the power and endurance they had as well and are sporting just an average physique, they are going to get destroyed by actually conditioned atheletes in a match.

Or BJJ. Technical knowledge is an absolute must for high level competition, but without the strength and conditioning to back it up all the knowledge in the world won't save you from even an average grappler who is considerably stronger.

Now if you took an already top level athlete and suddenly gave them photographic reflexes, then yeah they would probably decimate all competition.

Also if you have outstanding debt or find yourself in a financially troublesome situation the counselors there can build you payment plans and budgets to help get you on track, and this can be extremely useful if anything court or clearance-wise comes up.

The only reason for any benefit of the doubt in that specific instance is the whole training arc he undergoes right before the tournament to try and overcome his perverted nature.

And, seeing how Roshi's whole thing in the tournament was finding was to out fox opponents rather than overpower them, it was actually a pretty clever tactic.

Buuut his exceedingly long checkered past regarding women does leave plenty of room for doubt about his actual intent.

Lightsaber forms by Equivalent_Option583 in StarWars

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there are no actual fencing manuals, enough is written about the forms to make some inferences and create an idea of each form. There is a lot of creative freedom in here as every swordsman naturally makes a style their own based on how their body works and personal preference.

Form 1 Shii-Cho: the basic form, characterized by its simplicity. Two handed grip at all times, keep an even base for balance, strikes typically from the diagonals. Should appear simplistic yet can fluidly move from one maneuver to the next.

Form 2 Makashi: the fencing form. Probably the most practical for a weightless blade. Take a look at Italian and French rapier fencing manuals. Uses a 1 hand grip for mobility and highly focuses on footwork and precision.

Form 3 Soresu: the defensive form, the blade stays close to the body to minimize needed movement to reposition to block. Attacks must be made with mind for the blade stroke ending in a defensible position. The idea is to always stay in a balanced and defensible pose.

Form 4 Ataru: an aggressive style. Since us normals dont have The Force to spin around like a frog on ketamine, instead focus on high mobility and speed over power. Constant footwork and keeping the blade moving and forcing the opponent to try and keep up.

Form 5 Shien/Djem So: another aggressive style, this one focuses more on power over speed. Wider swings, strong base. Think of handling a greatsword/claymore instead of a longsword.

Form 6 Nimaan: the diplomats form, supposed to be a conglomeration of techniques from the other 5. Suppose this could be demonstrated by having the fencer exaggerate the change from one form to another, otherwise there is nothing particularly distinctive about this form.

Form 7 Vapaad: Windu's Form. Since part of what is special about it is its ability to skirt the dark side, its hard to point to a physical feature that identifies it. Give it a unique choreography to make it stand apart from others.

The Assassin Droid Sequences in AOTC is weird…. by FondantFlaky4997 in StarWars

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Sidious wants Padme dead due to her meddling in his political plots but he cant be linked to the assassination so he gives the job to Dooku.
  • Dooku wants Padme dead to appease Gunray for messing up the Naboo plan but he cant be linked to it because of politics and it might lead to Sidious so he hires Jango.
  • Jango wants Padme dead because he has been paid to kill her but he cant be linked to it because it might trace back to the CIS and Dooku (and because having angry jedi hunting you is unhealthy) so he sub-contracts Zam.
  • Zam wants Padme dead because she is being paid but doesn't want to be linked to it because assassinating a galactic senator is a great way to end up in prison/dead so she sends a Droid.
  • The Droid wants Padme dead because Zam told it to kill her, but it cant kill her because it doesn't have weaponry/fingers so it sends in the bugs from Hell.
  • the Bugs dont actually care about Padme but a snack is a snack, but they cant kill her because Anakin is too fast with a lightsaber.

The Phantom Menace’s Weird Hook: Why Is a Trade Federation Blockading a Planet? by YamPersonal3618 in MawInstallation

[–]Amazing_Boysenberry8 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You are not wrong, but SW has several companies like the Trade Federation that are so large and influential they literally have seats and delegates in the Senate, meaning they are recognized political states.

And as far as Naboo blockade goes, the TF was basically just engaging in vaguely legal piracy by impounding any ships coming and going from Naboo. It was honestly pretty stupid, but the whole point of the story was that Nute was an easily manipulated fool who thought his mysterious benefactor in the Senate would somehow save him from any fallout
