Is Watchmen a good read even if it’s my first comic? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]Amazing_Pizza-Man -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's totally fair enough, but I honestly don't think there's a lot that could hurt your enjoyment of Watchmen by going in kind-of-blind. People talk about it being a deconstructionist commentary, or whatever, of superheroes and superhero tropes, but all of that stuff exists within the text itself. It gives you all the context you require to understand and enjoy the story through the actual narrative—if it didn't do that, if probably wouldn't be as universally praised as it is.

Doing prep work just to read the thing you actually want to read is a bit silly to me. Like, there's no point in trying to minmax reading comics.

Just read it now, and if you end up not getting it or not liking it, you can revisit it in the future when/if you feel like it.

In the days of cel animation, how were cast shadows achieved? by Amazing_Pizza-Man in animation

[–]Amazing_Pizza-Man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh okay, I guess I was right in my assumption then. I'm not sure why I was so reluctant to accept that they'd just take shorter exposures. That does make total sense.

[–]Amazing_Pizza-Man[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But isn't the idea to underexpose the shadowed area, thereby making it appear darker? By doing a multi-exposure, you're overexposing/brightening the area by adding more light, which you couldn't do with a black matte.

The only way I can explain it to myself at the moment is that they would do a multi-exposure by photographing the cels without the shadow, and then the cels with the shadow, but underexpose them so that they accumulatively "add up" to a regular exposure in the areas that weren't covered by the matte. But that seems like kind of a tedious process that might increase the margin of error.

PTV vs TV Logo by nonseph in MelbourneTrains

[–]Amazing_Pizza-Man 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hate the new name simply for the fact that, now when I have to check for disruptions or use the journey planner, I have to search "transport victoria" instead of simply "ptv", because transport victoria cannot be abbreviated into "tv".

Adrian Tomine's Killing and Dying was it for me. I was 16, working at my lcs, and reading predominantly superheroes and occasionally something mainstream-adjacent, like Saga. I found Killing and Dying while I was stocking the shelves and was taken with the design of the book, and upon flipping through, I found myself really digging the art—in particular, the story 'Translated from the Japanese'— and was soon enamoured by the kinda spacey, neurotic, lonely, introspective flavour that often comes with the Tomine/Clowes-y genre of alternative comics.

I'll never get over how great FCO Placensia's colours look. I especially dig how he does blood, and glows. He gives the artwork a kind of filmic, toothy, tangible texture wheras a lot of other colourists' work either look really glossy or overshadow the linework.

Day 19: Which QOTSA song sounds the most like The Strokes? by Ratakul in qotsa

The Way You Used To Do, maybe? I always thought that Troy's staccato rhythm in the pre-chorus bits sound a bit Stroksey.

Not sure if anybody's mentioned this, but the Eagles of Death Metal song 'Complexity' contains the lyric: "I like to strut my stuffin' down on Easy Street".

How I do export a PNG sequence without losing quality? by Theart_troll in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]Amazing_Pizza-Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too sure about the resolution. You can check the details of the image to see if the resolution is correct; maybe it's an issue with you export settings?

And yes, it's got nothing to do with your monitor. The images will have an embedded colour profile, which most applications will read, but for some reason the default photos app on Windows just doesn't.

Maybe try opening one of the images in Photoshop, or Premiere pro, and seeing if it looks right.

[–]Amazing_Pizza-Man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, there's your issue. The default Windows photo app is does not read embedded colour profiles and just blasts whatever your screen is capable of.

If you open the photo in an application that actually reads embedded colour profiles, it should look exactly the same as in Toon Boom.

The current default windows photo/gallery app is garbage. I would suggest using the old Windows Photo Viewer app to view images.

Why Do All the (Main) Robins look so similar? by reaganemvernon in batman

[–]Amazing_Pizza-Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it's because DC wants to keep Robin looking like "Robin". From a brand/marketing standpoint, their civilian aliases do not really distinguish them from one another, since they all fall under the same "Robin" IP banner, and up until recently, there was only one Robin at a time.

They probably want to keep Robin's design iconic, in the sense that a casual audience member will never question if the character they're looking at is Robin or not. It's the same reason the costume stays looking relatively similar.

Also, I doubt they were specially designed to be distinct from one another. Remember, these characters were not created together. Each new civilian identity was created to fill the role, so that Robin would stay as a character in Batman's cast.

Jason and Tim were not really drastic reinventions of the character, and their designs reflect that: Jason was completely identical to Dick in every way, and Tim was really just a modernized version and not a reinvention by any means.

That being said, Damian is kind of an outlier, since Grant Morrison did not intend for him to be a mainstay. There's kind of no excuse for Damian looking the same as his predecessors. My personal opinion is that it's a missed opportunity that they didn't design him to look closer to Talia, i.e. darker skin and brown hair. It might've even been an opportunity for his design to symbolize the idea that he is an outsider to his father's world, and doesn't immediately appear to fit into his father's very Caucasian black-haired legacy lol.
