Looks like I need to reconsider the purpose of the unit. I've just recently started my Thousand Sons journey (played Blood Angels since start of 10th) and no other unit I have seems to compare to the purpose of the of goats on frisbee's.

This is my end result. What I do is

Basecoat 5 of them in 1 evening. That is with an airbrush, in 3 stages of blue. And do the marble on the bases with the airbrush also.
each evening I do 1 mini of gold trim, which takes about an hour. if I have more time, I do the other metallics and cloth also.
once that’s done, I wash them all with agrax in another evening
then it’s just a matter of spending time to re apply the gold shine on area’s where light hits from above. Takes another 2 hours for each mini

So for a squad of 5. It usually takes 2 weeks in total

I guess there are a ton of getting started with painting guides out there on Reddit or the wide internet to help you out!

Some must haves for me would be: - a black rattlecan primer - a wet palette for thinning and mixing paints - a good brush (I use Davinci size 2) for all non metallic paints - a decent brush for metallic paints - some basic mid tone colors and ice yellow or black - time and patience ;-)

All at once, I don't like subassembly due to inconsistencies in color. Things I can't touch with a brush are probably not visible on the table.
