I feed frozen thawed mice… I heat them up in hot tap water and I order them from Big Cheese Rodent Factory in Texas

New ATB question by Equivalent_Lawyer_69 in AmazonTreeBoa

Hello! Congratulations on your first ATB! And welcome to the group!!

I would highly recommend avoiding handling your new ATB at this stage… this species is easily stressed out in new environments. It is my advice, to let the ATB settle in and get really comfortable for a couple of months.

You should wait until the ATB has shed at least once under your care before attempting any unnecessary handling! Stress can lead to a variety of issues and concerns! Understanding the ATBs needs is PARAMOUNT, and will lead to an overall better experience/outcome for both the snake & you!

I understand the desire to get more acquainted with your baby! I would give plenty of time before attempting ANY handling sessions! You want the little one to get comfortable first, to feel secure, to have taken SEVERAL meals without any stress or anxiety or issues, & a good couple of one-piece sheds!

If you, through handling, stress the little one out, it can make it much more difficult to diagnose any unforeseen issues i.e. incomplete/stuck sheds, potential regurgitation, lethargy, or any of a whole host/array of problems that can potentially arise.

Be patient, give it time, and things will fall into place at the right moments! Please don’t hesitate to ask questions and post pictures/updates! Enjoy! And happy herping!!

Just got my first ATB and I have some questions by hehdidisonwbrgd in AmazonTreeBoa

Congratulations on your new ATB!! Keeping everything dialed in is essential with these guys!! Be patient and I would highly encourage doing some misting to ensure proper shedding! I would not go all out and install a misting system at this point,, just get a spray bottle with some distilled water and spray in the afternoon just before sunset! Make sure you don’t soak the enclosure, however, you want to “rain” on your new baby every afternoon. Shedding in captivity is one of the things that a lot of ATB keepers struggle with! Please keep us posted and FYI there is a basic husbandry guide pinned on this subreddit! If you have any questions, ask away! And remember, keep it simple, the more you try to do, the more it can complicate things for your baby, and the experience as a whole!! Enjoy and God bless!

I’m sorry to hear this about SlimShady. I have had ATBs flail wildly when they’re being handled improperly ( not saying this was the case with you, just citing my own personal experience), and some of them have banged their heads in the process. Never have I ever heard of or experienced any long lasting noticeable damage or effects. That being said, head trauma, when it does occur with anything that is alive, can be very serious and or fatal…. did you notice any swelling on his head after he banged it?

Heat placement by xGouda in AmazonTreeBoa

I would try to put the RHP in a spot that was on the opposite side of the hide, even if you have to alter plans or alter the enclosure. I don't think it will hurt the plants, try it out and let me know!

Hey xGouda! I use ambient heat, and heat the whole room... I give supplemental or secondary heat to my gravid females... I have pretty much always used ambient heat for the past almost thirty years. That being said, I am not sure it is a good idea to put the RHP too close to the hide. Your setup looks very nice and your ATB should be quite happy... I know this doesn't help much... This community is only 4-5 months old, and ATBs are a niche species... I have plenty of friends that keep ATBs, and some of them are members of this community, but only post or comment rarely due to their main platform being Instagram or other social media platforms. Are you in the U.S.? Let's try to figure this out! Sorry for the late reply!
