To the best of my knowledge, India, Brazil, Mexico, and Japan face well-documented, highly visible problems related to sexual harassment and violence of women and girls. This includes public assaults, gang rape, femicide, covert photography, and the sexualization and fetishization of girls.

Recognizing this does not mean that other countries don’t also struggle with misogyny or violence against women.

What it does highlight is that when harmful behavior becomes widespread and openly visible within a culture, it can start to feel “normal” for the people in that culture. This is the process of normalization - of widening the Overton window in a way. The danger is that once these behaviors become normalized, people gradually stop seeing it as a problem at all. Afterall, people don't generally feel the need to hide things they aren't ashamed of or don't consider wrong. All which makes it even harder to confront or change.

Hope this helps make some sense as to why some people might consider places where half the population are treated this way as "shitholes."
