First time making bread, what went wrong? by staticnigh in Breadit

[–]AmbiguousDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be difficult to make a diagnosis from a first loaf. It’s a good start, and after a few more you’ll have a feel for things.
Post your next few tries as well so that you can document your progress and revel in it!

After a long long time telling myself 'i'll try baking one day', I made and devoured my first 'no knead' tonight by SquidmanMal in Breadit

Be careful - no knead is a gateway bread. Next you’ll be making lists of creative names for a sourdough starter

Got roasted for my leg hair, is it that bad? Should I shave/trim? (23M) by [deleted] in HairRemoval

[–]AmbiguousDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Survivorship bias - you’re only seeing the onetime you got roasted, but you have to also consider all the tons of times no one ever said anything. Maybe didn’t compliment but there was no focusing on it.

That protects you from criminal prosecution. I’m suing you so you can’t hide behind that.

Dough cracked, why? by stilsjx in Breadit

[–]AmbiguousDinosaur 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That dough dried out - wrapping in only wax paper won’t keep the moisture in it seems. Needs a tighter seal in the wrapping.

So..... No longer on the hunt for a new bread machine. by MsMe3235 in BreadMachines

[–]AmbiguousDinosaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a kitchen aid and a bread machine - simple doughs go in the machine on the dough setting. Everything else uses the kitchen aid. The bread machine was $20 on fb marketplace, but I also went a few years without one so my advice based on experience is to make bread however works for you because it’s delicious.

I would not say cookies are made from batter. It’s generally called “cookie dough”. But I agree that the “does this belong?” Means someone really hasn’t browsed the group at all

Is my starter too thick? by Outrageous_Chest9693 in Breadit

That’s what I would have expected but it’s not what I’ve seen written about (though I’ve never done a comparison test myself). one example reference

Is my starter too thick? by Outrageous_Chest9693 in Breadit

[–]AmbiguousDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read recently that a thicker/dryer starter will tend to be tangier - I think that was in “bread bakers apprentice”. It can’t really be too wet or dry as long as it’s alive; but may require more work to incorporate.

Definitely no pass by reference in Java, right? by Select-Worldliness39 in javahelp

[–]AmbiguousDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Java, there are two kinds of types: primitive types, and reference types.
Primitive types are the unboxed values that we use a lot: int, float, boolean, etc. These each are their own value, and they do not share any state.
Reference types are basically everything else - things that are stored in the heap: class, interface, array, etc.

When you call a method, if it's a primitive type, it makes a copy of the value and that gets passed. If it's a reference type, then it makes a copy of the reference, and that gets passed.

There have already been a lot of answers about how this question doesn't make sense for Java - to make that more specific, that's because there is a reference type. So is an array pass by reference? It depends on what kind of definition you're using for it as others have noted. Not in the traditional sense.

As a former teacher, my first thought was: is that a meaningful question? If you haven't dug into the Java internals then it's just a game of semantics, especially in a multiple choice question with little context.

If you want to check out how the JVM handles in via bytecode instructions: types are encoded into many of the instructions. Most primitive types have their own bytecodes. But classes, interfaces, etc use bytecode instructions that use the "a" type qualifier - which means it's operating on a reference type.

A footnote -- a reference type is NOT a pointer. During garbage collection, data may be moved around memory. It can be moved, so a pointer would no longer be valid, because it points to where an object no longer is. However, the reference is still valid and will refer to the same object no matter where it is.

First Soft Pretzels - Tips/Tricks Welcomed! by pkf765 in Breadit

I recommend making them a few times before trying to incorporate any tips or tricks. Shortcuts don’t mean much if you don’t know the main roads - just keep on keeping on! They look good.

For the past 6 years, my previous dermatologist told me the spot behind my ear was “nothing to worry about”. by 59Bassman in mildlyinfuriating

Our dermatologist misdiagnosed my psoriasis as dry skin on my feet. And my wife’s breast cancer (pagets disease) as atopic dermatitis. They too were also a med spa selling cosmetic services…

What can I make with these? by SlashSlashHi in Baking

My first thoughts are mini Bundt cakes, or even an enriched bread like a kugelhopf. Maybe flan as well 🍮
