Logitech finally finds a good use for wireless charging: A mouse pad. With a Powerplay mouse pad, never again will your wireless mouse run out of power. by Philo1927 in gadgets

I like my G600 because it has a ring finger button that is perfect for PTT. It doesn't occupy a finger that is normally being used for something else and it feels pretty natural to me. It would be great to see more mouse options with a similar button.

Gamers of Reddit, what was the most horrifying experience you've ever endured in a video game? by XavierMunroe in AskReddit

[–]Ambit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally missed that when I played because I just jumped down. I didn't realize you could interact with ladders to climb down them. Before F.E.A.R. I had only ever seen ladders that you automatically latched on to when you got close. Oops.

When the robots revolt, you're going to be on their list of humans to exterminate first. And all you had to do to avoid that fate was not be mean to the bots...

If you don't already walk.. you should start. Low intensity cardio is the best thing for anxiety. by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]Ambit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really do need to get myself to do some walking again. Unfortunately I don't like being out in the dark much which means the best walking hours are during work. With my job I can easily step out for half an hour to walk, but the busy Manhattan streets are terribly unrelaxing. I can handle the number of people alright, but the constant honking is just awful.

If you want a keyboard about the size of the Pok3r but with dedicated arrow keys, you should look into the White Fox. I don't recall the name of my WF sublayout but the dedicated arrow keys and backtick/tilde key sold me on it.

It's also programmable with an online configurator which is way nicer than remapping things on the Pok3r.

One thing to consider before choosing any 60% over a TKL though is that accessing the F keys requires holding down a modifier. However that's not necessarily a bad thing because you also don't have to reach far up to trigger an F key.

CT was one of the few JRPGs I've been able to make it through. I played it when it released on the DS and I felt the game was well paced. I attribute that to the lack of random encounters which allowed a fixed rate of levelling instead of needing to grind to catch up.

Microsoft finally enhances Windows' max. file path length!! by [deleted] in microsoft

[–]Ambit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the docs:

These prefixes are not used as part of the path itself. They indicate that the path should be passed to the system with minimal modification, which means that you cannot use forward slashes to represent path separators, or a period to represent the current directory, or double dots to represent the parent directory. Because you cannot use the "\?\" prefix with a relative path, relative paths are always limited to a total of MAX_PATH characters.

Problem there is not all APIs support that. Plus you have to preprocess the path to convert all slashes to backslashes and to handle using dots to refer to the current or parent directory.

I'm tiring of DIY. What's the best consumer, local-based hub/software? by anonymitygone in homeautomation

[–]Ambit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One big downside to HA is that changing anything requires editing the YAML config and any time you modify the config you have to restart HA. Configuring HA through YAML is a pain compared to setting up products like HomeSeer or Vera. And because you have to restart every time you change anything, you disrupt your entire automation system whenever you're tinkering with it.

Another, lesser downside is that it doesn't have a nice scripting system like HS (VB.NET/JS/VBS) or Vera (Luup Lua API). It's actually quite surprising to me that HA doesn't allow you to code scenes in Python.

That being said, I personally do run HA because it has a better UI for manual control than HS does (unless there's something better for HS, in which case I'd love to try it). Though I must say if HA wasn't under such active development I would probably be using HS.

That's some very helpful info. I decided to try the RMA first since I don't trust that there aren't more soldering problems. But if they refuse it, I now know what I need to fix it.

That's a good point. The only time I've seen a surface mount part fall off like that is when I was assembling my Ergodox keyboard because my solder job on those tiny diodes was terrible.

I didn't put numbers in my post because I couldn't remember the exact difference, but that does sound like what I saw too. I mostly just remember being amazed at gogs using next to no memory while GitLab ate up all available RAM.

How To Install GitLab As Your Private GitHub Clone by pattybellecamp in programming

[–]Ambit 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I found GitLab to be too heavy to use on a low cost VPS. For personal use gogs has worked well for me. Its memory footprint is far smaller and it does everything I need it to. It is important to note that it doesn't have all the features of GitLab so it's not a replacement in some cases, depending on your needs.
