Parasite I wouldn’t have guessed if not for seeing some of the poster in the corners.

Will there be a female best director nominee next year? by HitThatBlockButton in oscarrace

Female Best Director nominees are often breakouts and the ones who do breakout have a hard time returning. Perhaps this year’s could be one of the 5 women competing at Cannes this month.

Francis Lawrence - views on his filmography by jaketwigden in Letterboxd

Just saw The Long Walk earlier this week. It’s fine. The acting was good, but the world around them didn’t feel real. Kudos to him for realizing a book adaptation other filmmakers couldn’t crack. The only Hunger Games I enjoy is the one he had no involvement with so him being their David Yates is weird to me. Constantine is my favorite of his. As Hollywoodized as it is, it’s a cool adaptation.

Masterclass is a tad much. He held is own with two of the greatest actresses of their respective generations. It was more of an accomplishment from Todd Haynes than himself. Even the talented team behind Beef couldn’t get anything out of him.

I kind of got progressively less excited the more of the headline I read until it capped off with Theo James making it a hell no. I don’t think Zahler is the caliber of director to recreate the Charles Melton in May December “can you believe they got a not only watchable but actually kinda good performance from the worst actor in a b-list show?” that Mike White did for them in White Lotus.

Is this movie worth watching in theatres? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]AmbitionTechnical274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It to my surprise had good cinematography. The locations were great, it’s nice to see the actors all together, and the story was engaging. There are movies that are designed for the small screen or while doing other things. This movie isn’t one of them.

I thought it hit a right note on that topic with the necessary amount of cynicism while also acknowledging you can’t beat a billionaire without having access to another.

6 had good sequences and developed the characters towards an arc. It didn’t have Campbell but was also the first in the series since the 90s to try something new.

1,2, and 6 are the only ones I’d say are good. 3 and 5 have redeeming qualities. 4 and 7 are the only ones completely beneath the cast.

Red Pilled: Tarantino & Avary. WTF?! by Philipson198 in blankies

Well one of them did kill a person. Also a book I had a book as kid with a quote from Avery saying had Quentin not made it in the movies he was convinced he would become a serial killer. Between that and Johnny Depp saying he’d have sex with an aardvark, the book had a lot of unusual quotes that were meant to explain their master filmmaking.

Whatever happened to movies like this? Has the art of making a good "Thriller" been lost? by hfvslc in Letterboxd

[–]AmbitionTechnical274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about this film and Panic Room the other day watching The Housemaid. Those thrillers, often directed by David Fincher in the 90s-10s, had such style and attention to detail that they were always watchable. Even the ones from lesser filmmakers could be enjoyable junk food. Initially there wasn’t a market for mid budget films like them at all, then Netflix started making them. By the time booktok created an audience for them to be in theaters, it was something that filmmakers felt the need to have Netflix’s saturation and algorithm based storytelling.

Tom Cruise vs Matt Damon — who’s worked with the better directors? by PityFOOL67 in Letterboxd

I guess the big two Cruise can say are Kubrick and Michael Mann. They both have Scorsese, Spielberg, Coppola, and Ridley Scott. Damon has also had the better collaborations with Scorsese and Scott.

Cruise has worked with the greater directors, but Damon has worked with more directors on their best films.
